Summer Fun: Experience the Refreshing 'Electric Music Water-Splashing Festival' at The Romance of Xi'an
This summer, I visited Xi’an, the ancient capital with a thousand years of history. I heard the Xi’an Songcheng Electric Music Water-Splashing Festival was on with all its cool excitement—how could I pass it up? On top of that, there’s the awe-inspiring grand song-and-dance show The Romance of Xi’an. Xi’an Songcheng is a large-scale performance park. Enter through the main gate and walk straight along Chronology Avenue, passing by Chang’an Gate, Guoyan Street, Yanyun Street, Songcheng Gate, Songcheng Tower, Raging Flame Volcano, Performance Plaza, and more—everywhere you look, there’s something to see.
During the day, you can go to Silver Beach to see camels, watch a shadow puppet show on Guoyan Street, enjoy the Lotus Charm performance under Chang’an Gate, listen to the powerful Huayin Laoqiang (a traditional opera) in front of the Decorated Archway, or join a Chinese-style flash mob on Yanyun Street. Inside the park, adorable miniature horses pop up from time to time. Inside Songcheng Gate, there’s a dreamy bubble show that kids love.
Of course, the main show The Romance of Xi’an and the immersive live performance The Great Earthquake are must-sees. In the evening, don’t rush off. Join the crowd for the Electric Music Water-Splashing Festival and the Watermelon King Contest.
Whenever I visit a city that has a Songcheng Romance show, I make sure to go. As one of China’s premier live entertainment productions, The Romance of Xi’an lives up to the series’ reputation, just like the ones in other cities. After watching the entire show, I was thoroughly blown away.
The grand song-and-dance spectacle The Romance of Xi’an tells the story of a young Chinese girl from overseas returning to her homeland to find her roots and discover her cultural heritage. It is divided into several acts: Light of Civilization, Islet on the Ba River, Yu the Great Tames the Floods, Glorious Tang Dynasty, and The Silk Road, among others. Floods, yellow sand, lighting, aerial performances, acrobatics—art blends with Xi’an’s culture, supported by mechanical and stage props, to deliver an immersive artistic feast.
The prologue, Light of Civilization, depicts the brilliant prehistoric civilization created by our ancestors, which formed the foundation for the later Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties. On stage, actors realistically portray pottery-making, fishing and hunting, house-building, and farming—even using real cattle and sheep.
Act One, Islet on the Ba River. The Ba River lies east of Xi’an, and the Xi’an Romance Park is also near it. Quoting the classic poem: ‘Guan-guan go the ospreys, on the islet in the river. The lovely maiden, a gentleman’s desire.’ On stage, a group of maidens dance gracefully by the riverside.
Act Two, Yu the Great Tames the Floods, is a well-known legend. The massive water curtain props and the high-difficulty acrobatic skills were truly spectacular. It also portrays the moving tale of Yu passing by his own home three times without entering.
Act Three, Glorious Tang Dynasty. The Tang Dynasty was an exceptionally brilliant era in ancient China—peaceful and prosperous, open-minded, teeming with talent, economically strong, and culturally diverse. Back then, Chang’an was a city everyone dreamed of visiting.
Act Four, The Silk Road. Countless legends have unfolded along this millennia-old trade route. On stage, real camels join the performance. The sound of camel bells instantly transports you to the desert.
This immersive live drama is full of creativity and emotion. At the beginning, the director recruits dozens of audience members on the spot to take part as temporary actors in The Great Earthquake. The response was enthusiastic—a foreign visitor even went on stage to join in. The director taught everyone their roles in a simple, entertaining way.
The entire performance uses high-tech effects to recreate the scenario of a devastating earthquake. But what moved me most were the individual stories interwoven throughout. In the face of the disaster, a newlywed couple, a mother and her son, and the rescue workers dedicated to relief efforts create one touching scene after another. After watching the whole show, my heart remained deeply stirred.
This is the perfect way to enjoy summer. After exploring the park during the day, don’t rush to leave. In front of Raging Flame Volcano at Performance Plaza, the Electric Music Water-Splashing Festival kicks off with a splash. On stage, a live band plays with passion, and energetic dancers heat up the atmosphere.
As more and more visitors gather, the DJ drops the beat and the plaza turns into a watery battleground. Water jets suddenly shoot up all around, and several water barrels are placed in the middle. Visitors grab water ladles, water guns, and other props to splash around to their heart’s content. After the water-splashing fun, there’s the entertaining Watermelon King Contest—grab a slice of watermelon for that ultimate taste of summer.
