Bali | Mt. Batur Sunrise Trek
Recently, Bali opened domestic tourism in Indonesia, and we also caught the wave. A group of five of us went to Mount Batur, one of Bali's famous active volcanoes, for a volcano sunrise trek.
Mount Batur is located in the northeast of Bali, with an altitude of 1717 meters. It is an active volcano that has erupted more than 20 times in the last century. The mountains around the crater are covered with thick volcanic ash and black lava, and the crater is often wreathed in smoke.
️ The difficulty of climbing Mount Batur is not high; people who exercise regularly can easily reach the summit. The whole trek takes about 2 hours. We set off around 3 AM and reached the summit before 5:30 AM to wait for the sunrise.
 Transportation tips:
There is no public transport to this place; you usually drive yourself or hire a car.
If you hire a car or drive, you can search for the following address on Google Maps: Mount Batur car park
 Average cost per person:
The easiest way to go to Mount Batur is by joining a tour group; there are various one-day volcano tour packages. Prices vary depending on the package content (for example, our agency offers four different packages). If you sign up for a trekking group, you usually depart from the hotel, so you don't need to worry about transportation.
If you go independently, you need to buy tickets and pay a guide fee at the entrance (you are not allowed to climb without a guide). The cost is usually around 500,000 Indonesian rupiah per person.
Practical tips:
The mountain temperature at night can reach 17°C or even lower. If you go hiking, you must prepare thick clothes, especially at the summit where the wind is strong and there is almost no shelter. It is very cold before sunrise.
It is recommended to wear sports shoes or hiking shoes with strong grip, as most of the trail is made of fine volcanic gravel and ash, which is very slippery.
There are small shops at the summit selling hot drinks at reasonable prices (hot coffee and hot milk in large cups are 15,000 Indonesian rupiah, about 7.5 RMB), but they are not always open.
After sunrise, when monkeys appear, the shops close quickly. Be careful with your belongings, as monkeys may jump on people and snatch things.
