Must-Visit Spot in Harbin: Central Street Area

China's northernmost city, Harbin, a paradise for enjoying ice and snow—is it a place you've been longing to visit? As a native Harbiner, let me share some must-visit spots in Harbin, Heilongjiang. The attractions below are grouped by area to make it easier for you to plan your trip.

Central Street (Central Street → Flood Control Memorial Tower → Saint Sophia Cathedral): The entire area is about 2 kilometers in radius, all within walking distance.

Central Street stretches from the Flood Control Memorial Tower on the Songhua River in the north to Jingwei Street in the south. This pedestrian street paved with square stones is lined with numerous European-style buildings in Renaissance, Baroque, and other styles, full of romantic charm. Starting in December, you can see interesting ice and snow sculptures all along Central Street, waiting for you to take photos with them. Walking along Central Street, there are over 70 European and neo-European buildings, most built in the early 20th century. Among them are various masterpieces of Western architectural schools, such as Daoli Qiulin Store (Art Nouveau building), Education Bookstore (the largest Baroque building in Harbin), Women and Children's Store (Renaissance-style building), Harbin Municipal Education Commission (Classical-style building), and other well-known structures. The Modern Hotel, built in 1906, is an Art Nouveau building. Its design is simple, relaxed, and fluid. Huamei Western Restaurant, founded in 1925, was originally named Mars Western Tea and Food Shop. The first floor has a modern European garden-style bar, the second floor is styled after the Kremlin in Moscow, and the third floor features Russian modern style.

At the end of Central Street is the Flood Control Memorial Tower. Starting in December, ice amusement projects are built on the ice surface around the tower, including ice slides, snow tubes, and ice motorcycles. They are especially suitable for couples or families with children; you are sure to have a great time.

Nearby Central Street, Daoli Market and Saint Sophia Cathedral are also must-visit spots. All the snacks you want to try in Harbin can be found at Daoli Market: Russian-style smoked sausages, wine-filled candies, big Russian bread (列巴), smoked salmon, Northeast black fungus, Northeast hazel mushrooms, and more. Daoli Market is located on the first floor of Harbin No.1 Department Store. After leaving the market, you can also see a charming Modern Hotel outlet. This outlet is quite spacious—you can order an ice cream and a piece of bread inside, sit down, and enjoy the street view for a relaxing experience. If you have to queue to buy Modern ice cream on Central Street, come directly to this store; it's a direct Modern outlet.

Just past Daoli Market, you'll see Saint Sophia Cathedral. The beauty of Saint Sophia Cathedral varies with the seasons: in spring, it's full of vitality; after a summer rain, it's fresh and quiet, with white pigeons occasionally flying by—a scene beloved by Harbiners. In winter, it's even more beautiful, covered in silver and glowing with splendor.

Harbin is a city with a relatively slow pace, especially evident in the old city area—the core area of Harbin—around Central Street. The buses move slowly, and pedestrians stroll leisurely. The biggest highlight of this area is the century-old historic buildings, which exude an exotic charm and a sense of timelessness. Honestly, I suggest that every Chinese person should travel across the country's magnificent landscapes and experience its ice and snow. Only then can you truly feel the vastness of our motherland and the grandeur of its frozen scenery! Well, that's all for this edition. Next time, we'll talk about the must-do activities around the number one hot spot in Harbin: the Ice and Snow World area. See you next time~
