Harbin Grand Theatre: The Most Beautiful Curves
When visiting Harbin, the Harbin Grand Theatre, one of its landmark buildings, is a must-see. Its English name is Harbin Grand Theatre, located on Cultural Center Island in Songbei District, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China. Its geographical location is quite advantageous, surrounded by water on all sides. This is a picture I found online before going—it looked pretty impressive.
The theatre has a very distinctive exterior design. In February 2016, it was selected by ArchDaily as the 'Best Building of the World 2015' in the 'Best Cultural Architecture' category. That same year, it also won the World Architecture News 2016 Best Performance Space Award and the China Construction Engineering Luban Prize. In 2017, the Harbin Grand Theatre was named the best concert hall in the world by the UK's Daily Telegraph and received the 14th China Civil Engineering Zhan Tianyou Award. After the theatre opened, performances such as ballet, opera, and symphony orchestras began simultaneously, with shows almost every day. Cameras are not allowed during performances, and no full recording is permitted. Generally, plays and theatrical performances do not allow photography or leaking of images—these requirements will be clearly explained during the show.
The weather was nice today, so I just randomly booked a ticket through the theatre's official WeChat account to go see a show. There are other channels too, including the official website, Ctrip, and others. Booking tickets via the official account is very convenient: after following it, there is a menu at the bottom with a one-click ticket purchase option. After entering, you can choose your preferred show, and prices are based on seat selection. However, for out-of-town visitors with fixed schedules, you can only see the show available on that day.
After picking up the tickets, I went with my ID to the front entrance of the theatre, directly opposite the main hall. You need to enter the theater 30 minutes early, so be sure to arrive early. The outside scenery is also beautiful—you can go outside to take photos. Viewing from outside is free, and there are restrooms available. However, to enter inside for a tour, you need to purchase a performance ticket. Just bring your relevant ID when picking up tickets.
As one of Harbin's tourist attractions, transportation is quite convenient. I took a taxi with a friend. You can also search for bus routes on your phone. We started from Heilongjiang University, and since taking the bus or subway would require several transfers, we shared a taxi, which was more convenient. It’s better to take a taxi or drive yourself, as there is a parking lot, and the theatre is on that small island.
The theatre is highly regarded in the architecture and design world as a Chinese-designed grand theatre. Personally, I still find it a bit difficult to appreciate drama and art. Besides watching shows, you can also take a stroll along the riverbank and enjoy the scenery.
Since its completion, the Harbin Grand Theatre has received much acclaim. As the 2015 Best Cultural Architecture in the world, it excellently emphasizes the interaction and participation between people and buildings, becoming a new cultural landmark in Harbin closely connected with nature. More and more people come here to enjoy cultural life and appreciate the beauty of architecture.
The Harbin Grand Theatre is located in a body of water in the center of Harbin. The surrounding water scenery gives this famous northern city building a gentle and tender southern charm. The main building is a soft white streamlined structure that complements and blends harmoniously with the nearby waters.
It’s even more stunning when the lights come on at night. Since our show was at noon, I could only find a few pictures online to look at.
The exterior architecture has the unique characteristics and style of independent Chinese design. It is a huge building constructed on an island in the Songhua River. In a way, it resembles the Sydney Opera House, also built by the water. However, unlike the sail-shaped design of the Sydney Opera House, the Harbin Grand Theatre is streamlined. It complements the winding surroundings perfectly, seemingly making excellent use of the local terrain. It feels naturally formed, combining the grandeur of the north with the gentle curves of flowing lines, greatly embodying the Chinese doctrine of the mean—magnificent and grand, yet not ostentatious. The designer truly achieved consistency in both appearance and spirit.
Inside, the theatre has a large auditorium (1,600 seats) and a small auditorium (400 seats). The building adopts a special double-curved surface exterior design.
The interior designs are all streamlined and very beautiful.
I must praise this detail—it’s just so satisfying. The designer truly perfected the details, and the restroom signs are really beautiful. As mentioned earlier, consistency inside and out.
Since photography is not allowed during performances, I won’t include pictures here.
But it’s worth noting that some theaters do not allow you to bring other items inside, which is mentioned in the WeChat ticket purchase guidelines. There are also no storage areas. Items such as food, drinks, lighters, and photography equipment are not allowed.
On the official WeChat account, you can also find theater rental items like blankets, and there are some thoughtful items prepared for women. You can ask the staff on-site to purchase them.
The designers set up a unique pedestrian sightseeing corridor and observation deck in the large auditorium. Visitors can overlook the surrounding wetlands and experience Harbin’s unique natural wetland scenery. Inside, you can also go to the observation deck to enjoy the view and take photos, but you must follow all the rules and regulations and not wander off.
If you need to eat, after leaving the island, there are many good restaurants near Zhongyuan Avenue. And since you’re by the Songhua River, you should try the river fish, which isn’t far from here.
That’s about it. I’ll update when I have more time.
