A Spontaneous Journey to Mulan Cloud Mist Mountain's Sea of Azaleas
"The hillsides are blooming, oh, with azaleas."
Spring outings and flower appreciation, with flowers as the medium, we set off on a spontaneous journey to Mulan Cloud Mist Mountain, one of China's four great azalea seas.
Speaking of Cloud Mist Mountain, one cannot avoid mentioning a legendary woman—Hua Mulan. According to legend, this is where she practiced her sword skills and the birthplace of her story. Imagine, a thousand years ago, a woman in military attire, wielding her sword against the wind amidst nearly ten thousand acres of azaleas, heroic and valiant. Her loyalty and filial piety still inspire everyone today.
It takes about an hour's drive from downtown Wuhan to reach Mulan Cloud Mist Mountain. This week, we happened to catch the opening ceremony of the 2024 15th Mulan Cloud Mist Mountain Azalea Festival and the inaugural tour of Huangpi District's "Five-Scenery Joint Ticket."
At the Flower Goddess Square of Mulan Cloud Mist Mountain in Huangpi, "thousands of little Henan buddies" came to the beautiful Huangpi. From the mountain peaks, azaleas blanketed the hillsides, stretching for miles, a magnificent sight.
Azaleas, also known as mountain reds, are one of China's top ten famous flowers. They prefer a cool, moist, and well-ventilated semi-shaded environment, neither tolerating extreme heat nor severe cold, with an optimal growth temperature of 12°C to 25°C. In other words, where azaleas bloom in spring, the temperature and humidity are most comfortable for humans.
Immersing oneself in a sea of azaleas is perhaps the most romantic way to embrace this spring.
Best viewing spots: Huayu Mountain, Flower Sea, Flower Ocean
Entering the mountains in the early morning, the azaleas are in full blaze, extremely splendid. Upon reaching Huayu Mountain, clusters of azaleas line both sides of the boardwalk, some budding, others in full competitive bloom.
The fiery red azaleas are quite stunning—vast in area and dense in flowers, even covering parts of the path. There are three boardwalks; visitors can choose any one to wander among the flowers, pausing and lingering, so enchanted that they forget the way back.
The boardwalk on Huayu Mountain offers the broadest view. Built around the mountain peak, as you climb and enjoy the flowers, the scenery changes with your perspective and elevation. Flower views and landscapes shift continuously, allowing you to overlook the sea of azaleas and gaze at the reservoir in the distance.
The Flower Sea, a flower-viewing boardwalk built halfway up the mountain, is wider and gentler than Huayu Mountain's path. Walking along, azaleas cling to the mountain walls both above and below, surrounding the visitors.
For lunch, one can visit Wangmao Farmhouse at the foot of the mountain, serving Huangpi-style farm cuisine—free-range chicken, freshly picked vegetables...
Sitting in the courtyard, caressed by the spring breeze, enjoying the beautiful scenery and delicious food. Such a carefree and leisurely life, I suppose, is just like this.
"I pluck two branches and hold them in hand; upon close inspection, they seem not of this world. Among flowers, this one is like Xi Shi; lotus and peony are like old maids."
This is the romantic mountain flower scene depicted by the poet Bai Juyi.
At Cloud Mist Mountain, take a leisurely walk along the mountain paths to feel the serenity and peace of nature. During the Azalea Festival, admire the sea of flowers covering the hills, then savor local cuisine for lunch, immersing yourself in the rich cultural atmosphere of Huangpi.
