Before going to Bolian, I was often influenced by its many labels: 'A top-tier local boutique hotel that opened only five in over 20 years,' 'The most tasteful woman,' 'Crafting a century-old brand with artisan spirit,' and so on. Everyone around me who had been to Bolian praised it highly. This made me even more curious. So, for this stop, we chose the birthplace of the Bolian brand: Kunming Bolian Hotel.

Before we begin, let's enjoy an aerial video to get a feel for the Bolian Hotel nestled in the scenic mountains and waters.

About 45 minutes from downtown Kunming, after a short stretch of mountain road, Yangzonghai Lake suddenly appeared to the right of the car window. The driver said, 'Almost there.' Soon, the car stopped in front of a building that blends the architectural characteristics of Yunnan's ethnic minorities.

A girl dressed in ethnic attire handed me a cold towel and put a Dai-style silver pendant on me, suddenly pulling me back to reality: an eagerly anticipated vacation had begun.

I wasn't in a hurry to go to my room; instead, I wandered into the 'Bolian Tea Garden' next to the lobby.

I had imagined it would be like the vast tea plantation of Jingmai Mountain in my mind, but upon stepping in, I found it felt more like a museum. The butler, noticing my confusion, told me that this used to be a tea room and tea museum, and now all Bolian properties name the corresponding area the Tea Garden.

Guests can not only experience tea ceremonies and incense ceremonies here, but it is also the largest Pu'er tea museum under the Bolian Hotel Group, with a rich collection. If interested, you can ask the butler to book a Pu'er tea culture tour.

Villa guests can also enjoy afternoon tea here every day. It's not the typical Instagram-worthy afternoon tea; instead, the Cloud Tea Angels perform a tea ceremony face-to-face with guests. While enjoying freshly baked tea snacks, you can savor Pu'er tea from Jingmai Mountain. Mmmm... just thinking about it feels extraordinary!

Everything experienced in the 'Bolian Tea Garden' is precisely the most important part of Bolian's brand philosophy: it never intended to be a 'Sino-Western hybrid.' From the brand's inception, it has focused purely on creating resort hotels that embody traditional Chinese culture. Tea is one of Bolian's treasures. Kunming Bolian has the largest tea museum, and if you want to experience the full depth of Pu'er tea culture, you must visit the Jingmai Mountain Bolian Hotel!

Another treasure of Bolian is its hot springs. For Kunming Bolian Hotel, this is its most competitive feature. From a certain perspective, it has been a benchmark for experiencing high-end hot spring culture in Kunming, standing strong for over a decade, proving its charm and strength! Many locals choose this place as a weekend getaway, enjoying the 'sea' view, soaking in hot springs, tasting delicious food, and relaxing leisurely.

The hot spring center is next to the main building, adjacent to the restaurant and conference center. The spacious lobby with strong Southeast Asian vibes and courteous staff immediately set the hot spring experience apart from ordinary public bathhouses.

Even for someone like me who has visited more than ten hot spring facilities, stepping out of the changing room and seeing the long double-decker corridor extending outdoors, with endless soaking pools and lush vegetation, I was still awestruck by the scale. There are over 20 pools, including whirlpool baths, wooden barrel baths, petal baths, sea-view baths, hydrotherapy baths, and even a free fish therapy pool. When you start sweating, you can enjoy complimentary ice Pu'er tea and other drinks to cool down.

This place truly deserves the title of 'sea-view garden hot spring.' You can even choose a massage room for a private rose petal bath with a sea view, or enjoy a full-body massage while gazing at the sea—that's unparalleled beauty, isn't it?

The third treasure of Bolian is, of course, its hotels! To be honest, when I was still wandering around the main building and the hot spring center, I felt a bit uneasy, thinking the public areas weren't very private, especially with quite a few weekend visitors. But when the butler drove me to the villa area, I was surprised to find the entrance so discreet. The deliberate C-shaped entrance ensured that non-guests could only see a bamboo grove, unable to peek into any corner of the guest rooms.

I don't know if the designer referenced Tao Yuanming's 'Peach Blossom Spring' when designing this villa area, but it seems to me the perfect description: fragrant grass, beautiful blossoms, open vistas, and fields, ponds, mulberry trees, and bamboo. This area spans over 40,000 square meters, yet there are only 21 villas scattered across this natural lakeside garden.

|Stone steps leading to the villas|

Strolling through the villa area, it's hard to spot the villas at first glance. The designer cleverly integrated the buildings with the trees, flowers, and landscapes. Each villa is surrounded by lush, winding paths; you have to ascend or descend stone steps to reach each villa, giving every villa excellent privacy and spaciousness. In my opinion, this is the most important feature of a pool villa.

I stayed in the most basic pool villa, yet it already boasted nearly 250 square meters of generous space. The outdoor area of the villa is unique—just the stepping stones across the water leading to the entrance are full of charm. At the far end of the villa is a Southeast Asian-style pavilion, where brewing a pot of Pu'er, daydreaming, and reading feels like a heavenly life.

|Sunken lounge area, with pool on one side and walkway on the other|

The design of the outdoor pool is also clever. It is separated from the walkway to the guest room by a sunken lounge area, enhancing privacy. Sun loungers by the pool allow you to fully enjoy the afternoon.

The villas are almost entirely built with teak and volcanic stone. These precious materials not only add texture but also ensure they withstand the test of time. Indeed, these villas were built in 2008 but show no signs of age—this is because teak does not warp or crack under sun and rain, is resistant to decay, insects, and wear, and maintains a bright luster like new.

Teak also has a strong natural feel. Large floor-to-ceiling windows bring the indoor and outdoor living spaces together. The interior space is well-used: brew a pot of Bolian Pu'er in the living area, the sunlit corner in the bedroom is perfect for daydreaming, and the desk area behind the bed meets work needs.

Some details in the villa, such as the retractable TV, ample power sockets, fully electric curtains and blinds, Bolian tea sets, and Bolian Pu'er tea leaves, also meet modern needs.

The bathroom area is also spacious, with a large walk-in closet. But wait—no bathtub?

Ta-da! Look outside! There's such a large hot spring pool—why would you need a bathtub?! Every evening, the housekeeping lady brings a large basin of rose petals, fills the pool with hot spring water, and lights candles. An incredibly romantic private bath is all mine!

The designer also added some nice touches to the pool villas. For example, every two villas can be connected through a wooden arched door to form a twin pool villa, perfect for friends or family traveling together. Also, some villas are designed with a sunken layout, with only the thatched roof visible above ground; you have to go down a spiral staircase to reach the villa. Does this design look familiar? Yes, the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan has a similar design. It's no coincidence—both hotels were designed by the same British architect, John Heah! (His other works include Chongqing Bolian, Amanera, etc.)

Are there any small regrets about staying in this pool villa? Yes, a few. Even though it's so close to Yangzonghai Lake, you can't see the 'sea' from the villa. To make up for that, you might choose a lake-view pool villa.

The layout of the lake-view villa is different from mine. The space is more open, and the color scheme boldly incorporates some red. The most comfortable thing, of course, is lying in bed while enjoying the view of Yangzonghai Lake!

The largest villa in the hotel is the three-bedroom presidential villa covering 2,050 square meters. With a huge private pool, a private beach for villa guests only, and the Instagram-worthy water feature corridor, it adds even more possibilities for ultimate luxury.

Hidden within the villa area is the Kunming Bolian Wetland Spa Center. It's another treasure, with a strong Southeast Asian atmosphere and an impressive sun canopy in the reception area.

The spa is surrounded by wetlands. Treatment rooms with such an excellent environment and generous space are rare worldwide. After a spa treatment, you can relax on an outdoor sun lounger or unwind in the dry or steam sauna—it's indescribably delightful.

Actually, before checking into Kunming Bolian, I was a bit worried that besides lying around and sleeping, there might be nothing to do. But I found that besides the hot spring center, where you can spend a whole day, there are plenty of other spots worth visiting. For example, the Bolian Organic Vegetable Garden.

Apart from various vegetables, the most fun is picking fruit. This season, bayberries, peaches, and passion fruit are ripe. I even discovered a very small flat peach that looks unappealing but tastes incredibly sweet and fragrant—I couldn't stop eating it! I'll let you in on a secret: most of the vegetables served in the hotel restaurant are also harvested from their own garden.

Another must-visit spot is the sunken platform by the lake, a perfect Instagram photo location that you can't get enough of.

If you want to do some health-oriented exercises, the hotel has a resident Tai Chi master. There are daily Tai Chi classes on the lawn by the lake.

For kids, there's no need to worry about boredom—the hotel has a sizable kids' club to keep the little ones entertained.

Now that I've covered Play and Stay, it's time for Delicacy! I always say a good resort hotel without good food is unacceptable. Bolian Hotels have always emphasized the dining experience, especially since Yunnan is a province famous for its cuisine! Kunming Bolian Hotel has only one restaurant, Bolian Xuan, but it offers a variety of Chinese and Western dishes.

Since 2013, when Bolian Group acquired Château Grand River in Bordeaux, enjoying the estate's own wines at the restaurant has become a unique experience. If tasting at the restaurant isn't enough, the hotel's wine bar is specially designed for wine enthusiasts.

If I had to recommend just one dish, it would be the cross-bridge rice noodles! The hotel's special cross-bridge rice noodle set costs 268 RMB per serving but is still in high demand—you must book in advance. Many ingredients are freshly sourced upon order, attracting many Kunming locals who drive specifically for it! The set consists of bread, appetizer, rice noodles, and dessert, turning the rice noodles into a feast. More importantly, the broth is made from three types of free-range chickens, which truly sets it apart.

For Chinese food lovers, local specialties like Yiliang roast duck (with a unique flavor and texture different from Beijing duck, Nanjing duck, or Leshan sweet-skinned duck) and stir-fried beef with porcini mushrooms are well worth trying.

For Western food, the grilled lamb chops are a must. The lamb is juicy, without any gamey flavor, and the sauce is perfectly seasoned—tender and delicious.

Besides dining in the restaurant, guests can also enjoy meals at the waterfront restaurant by the lake. Food paired with beautiful scenery is naturally more flavorful.
