Hidden Gem: Dongchuan Red Land, a Rainbow on Earth Under Yunnan's Sky!

Yunnan, the beautiful province, boasts two natural masterpieces, both related to the land:

one is the Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces, and the other is the Dongchuan Red Land.

The Yuanyang terraces are hailed as 'carvings of the earth,'

while the Dongchuan Red Land is called 'the palette of the earth.'

It feels like a scene from mythology:

on that day, the sun was shining brightly,

God, holding a color palette, was creating the earth.

Just as the coloring was almost finished,

the palette accidentally fell to the mortal world.

God forgot about it, but those who have been there can never forget...

Dongchuan Red Land is located northeast of Kunming. Because the soil contains high levels of iron and aluminum, it forms a dazzling red color. The land is divided into patches by fields and crops, creating a colorful mosaic from afar. Against the backdrop of blue skies and white clouds, the scene is even more spectacular.

The Red Land is at an altitude of about 2,000 meters. For thousands of years, local farmers have toiled on this barren land, inadvertently adorning it into a breathtakingly colorful landscape.

The Red Land scenic area centers around Huashitou Village in Xintian Township, covering a radius of dozens of kilometers. Everywhere you look, there are vast stretches of red land in various forms, rich in color. In recent years, it has become a must-visit photography destination for enthusiasts coming to Yunnan.

Modern Xiao Cao's poem 'Dongchuan Red Land' says: 'Ancient pines accompany the evening glow with thunder, new soil outshines red flowers after rain; mountain ladders hang near the sky's edge, morning breeze and clouds create a poetic painting,' giving a new interpretation of the Red Land's human and geographical landscape.

From May to February of the following year, some of the red land is plowed and left fallow, while other parts are planted with highland barley, wheat, and other crops. From a distance, it appears colorful, and with the blue sky and white clouds, it forms an extraordinarily magnificent scene, making it one of photographers' favorite places.

According to locals, the third day after rain is the most beautiful time for the Red Land. The rain-soaked soil becomes richer in color under the sun. After heavy rain, the clouds part, the sun shines brightly, the sky becomes even more vividly blue, clouds change in various shapes, and the light and shadows cast upon the fields change every second, creating a brand new picture every moment.

Among the Red Land attractions, Damakan is the best spot for sunrise photography, while Luos Bay and Wafang Liangzi are good places for sunset shots. However, it's not absolute; each spot has its own unique features.

Damakan is actually a village in the Red Land area. Around sunrise, looking down from a high slope, you can capture the village's curling cooking smoke and the morning mist and sea of clouds rising over the red land.

Qicai Slope (Seven-Color Slope) presents a distinct 'seven-color zone' within a view of less than ten kilometers. Looking out, 'red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, purple'—all seven colors can be seen. Qicai Slope and Jinyuan Garden (Splendid Garden) are close together.

Jinyuan Garden offers panoramic views of vast undulating hillsides. Different seasons and different plots show different colors, with afternoon shooting being ideal.

The Thousand-Year Dragon Tree is a huge ancient pine that stands alone on a hilltop near Huagou Village, silently guarding the Red Land for centuries. The tree that appears repeatedly in the film 'Forever Young'—that vast and solitary tree—is this one.

Yuepu Ao (Music Score Hollow) is near the famous Huashitou Village. Here, the red land with its ridges and patches looks like a musical score from a distance, which probably gave it its name.

Those varied lines and scenes are the natural movements composed by nature. Over time, layers upon layers of music accumulate like mountains, spreading from deep within the mountains to all directions, to every corner of the world.

Luos Bay gets its name from its winding road, the only way up the mountain. Both it and Wafang Liangzi are good places to photograph sunsets. When the sun sets over Luos Bay, with luck, you can capture the mountain's shadow just hitting the winding road as the sun goes down.

These scenic spots are considered representative of the Red Land. They are known for their vivid colors, graceful layers, and the integration of color, lines, layers, and majestic beauty, each like a splendid brocade woven with colorful threads.

From the observation deck at Jinyuan Garden, looking far into the distance, you see a world of vibrant colors. The beautiful color patches stretch straight to the horizon, with clearly visible lines, contrasting color blocks, and alternating light and dark crops... Those graceful lines paint the red land with even more vivid strokes.

Gazing at every patch of red soil, every hillside, every scene, they are like moving poems, like enchanting paintings. Appreciating this mysterious land, one's heart is deeply moved, unconsciously intoxicated in this poetic and picturesque colorful field.

The most beautiful scene is probably Luoxia Gully (Sunset Cloud Gully), also called Xiantang Di (Sinkhole Land). It is a sunken depression surrounded by mountains, with a small village nestled independently in this embrace of hills. Despite its name suggesting a sunset spot, Luoxia Gully is also a great place for sunrise photography; many iconic Red Land photos are taken at sunrise in Luoxia Gully.

In the early morning, golden sunlight gently spills over the red land, making it even more resplendent. The opposite ridge is gilded with layers of gold, and the village in the depression bathes in the morning light, appearing even more peaceful. The rising sun wields its magical brush, freely painting this dreamlike, gorgeous picture.

It does not have the worldly bustle of Lijiang Old Town,

nor the picturesque scenery of Dali,

nor the ethnic charm of Xishuangbanna,

nor the ethereal beauty of Lugu Lake...

But its tranquility and peace bring a refreshing joy to the heart.

Its wonder is also unique,

giving photographers a distinctive shock!

To most people, the stunning Dongchuan Red Land is actually just a barren land, a 'red soil desertification' caused by human activity, weather, or natural factors. Only a few crops that are resilient and undemanding can grow on this land.

The simple local people have lived on this barren land for generations, working day and night, tirelessly planting crops on this soil. It is these inadvertent labors that have adorned the land with rich and vivid color patches.

Undoubtedly, besides the clear sky, drifting clouds, red soil, and winding ridges, it is the hardworking figures, honest faces, and simple smiles that form the most beautiful scenery on this land, the eternal theme of this splendid painting.
