The magical 2020 is now behind us, and a hopeful 2021 officially begins.

This warm winter, I kicked off the year's first trip with a five-day, four-night journey to the Colorful Yunnan · Ancient Dian Town. Kunming is truly a wonderful place, lying at the blessed latitude of 25° N, the world's recognized "golden climate and ecological zone." While much of the country is battered by cold waves, here alone spring lingers all year round.

Thanks to its diverse natural environment and profound cultural heritage, Kunming has become a life belt ideal for leisure, vacation, and wellness. Countless people come here seeking a healthy life and poetic dwelling. At this time of year, in Ancient Dian of Kunming, flowers and trees are in full bloom, red-billed gulls linger, and sunshine wraps the breeze from mountains and lakes, planting warmth and smiles on the faces of the elderly, the young, and children alike, gifting them with a beautiful and easygoing way of life.

Having visited Ancient Dian before, this in-depth trip made me fall even more in love with the place. You can bring the elderly, children, family, and friends here—there are rich experiences and activities suitable for all ages. It fulfills every imagination about a vacation, offering an elegant "ideal life" above the mundane. It is pure relaxation, a genuine leisure journey where you can take charge of your life in Ancient Dian and then fall in love with an entire town.

More than two thousand years ago, an ancient kingdom once existed along the shores of Dianchi Lake. Sima Qian, in the Records of the Grand Historian, called it "Dian." Yet, shortly after he recorded it, the Dian Kingdom vanished without a trace—no legends, no stories, no one knowing where its people went. It became an eternal mystery, and no one ever mentioned this glorious chapter of ancient Yunnan history again. However, the artistic achievements it once reached at its peak were never revived, even after two millennia.

Regarding this history, Sima Qian left a critical record. Around 339 BC, the State of Chu sought to expand its influence southwestward and sent General Zhuang Qiao into Dian. Soon after, the Qin State conquered Ba and Shu, cutting Zhuang Qiao off from his homeland. Thus, "he made himself king of Dian and adopted the local customs to govern the people." This is the first clearly documented Dian king, though whether there were earlier Dian kings remains unverified. But in the years before Zhuang Qiao's arrival, the bronze culture of the Dian people had already entered its golden age. Archaeologist Professor Li Kunsheng noted that, regardless of artistic achievements, Chu culture at that time was likely more advanced than Dian culture—at least, Chu people wore shoes while Dian people went barefoot. However, Dian tombs seem to have left few traces of Chu cultural influences that Zhuang Qiao might have brought into Yunnan, leading some scholars to question this record.

DAY 1: Arrive in Kunming, check into Ancient Dian Resort Hotel; explore Ancient Dian Vitality Town and Banshan Healthy Life Center; enjoy delicious food at Yixinyuan.

DAY 2: Fun at Colorful Yunnan · Happy World—from morning to night, ride rides, watch shows, a full day of park activities.

DAY 3: Tour Ancient Dian Wetland Park, encounter countless red-billed gulls; soak in Ancient Dian Hot Spring, experience a private hot spring villa, and savor Muyuntai cuisine.

DAY 4: Feed cute animals at Dora Cute Pet Paradise; stay at Crowne Plaza Kunming Ancient Dian Town.

DAY 5: End of trip, happy return.

My journey in Ancient Dian began with a stay at the Ancient Dian Resort Hotel.

This is a large holiday apartment hotel with 1,168 two-bedroom, one-living-room suites.

The weather was wonderful when I arrived—under Yunnan's signature blue sky and white clouds, my mood soared. The resort hotel boasts a lovely garden; in the breeze-laden afternoon, surrounded by the fragrance of flowers, I discovered that everyday life holds ever-fresh beauty.

The grounds are spotless, and I occasionally ran into a few passersby who spoke in hushed tones. I probably wouldn't treat this as a commercial street; it feels more like the backyard garden of a residential community.

The room at Ancient Dian Resort Hotel was excellent—not like a typical hotel, but more like home. The oversized balcony, the shared family living room, and the full set of household appliances provide thoughtful and comfortable vacation living for family outings.

Personally, I find the two bedrooms ideal for a family stay, and with a kitchen, whipping up simple meals is easy. Here, you can ease travel fatigue and enjoy the comfort of your own home.

The family-themed rooms are visually delightful, with plenty of toys and childlike decorations. For convenience, they also provide children's toilets, toiletries, and more—very thoughtful details.

Address: No. 18, Huanhu South Road, Kunming City

Transportation tip: About a 40-60 minute taxi ride from the airport; for first-time visitors to Kunming, a taxi or self-driving is recommended.

Average cost: Family suite starting at 437 yuan per night

Tips:

Guests can access the resort's super-luxurious gym, with high-end equipment and professional trainers—very impressive. Also, shuttle carts can take guests to the swimming pool near the hot springs, which is heated year-round. Active guests shouldn't miss it.

Ancient Dian Vitality Town is a delight to explore—a one-stop shop for eating, drinking, playing, and shopping. I met many visitors strolling with elderly family members and children. It feels like no other tourist area can so conveniently meet our daily needs.

There are three distinctive restaurants—Yixinyuan, McDonald's, and Banshan·Healthy—plus a food court with 11 specialty eateries, offering healthy and delicious dining options.

The hotel area also features the Banshan·Healthy Living Center, providing a five-in-one health management service: professional rehabilitation and fitness, nutritional meals, natural healing, art appreciation, and educational public welfare. The fitness facilities are comprehensive, with one-on-one personal trainers—truly professional.

I personally love the Banshan Café near the lakeside. Inside, there's a selection of coffee and drinks, and the cozy interior design lifts your spirits. Part of its design is exactly my style—extensive use of rough-hewn logs that wrap luxury, simplicity, emptiness, ease, casualness, and laziness into one; every artistic touch of plants and flowers is woven into the overall ambience.

It serves authentic Western breakfast, light afternoon tea meals, imported organic coffee, fresh juices, and handmade additive-free baked goods all day long.

On the ground floor of Vitality Town, there's also a Nuoxiang Life Supermarket, tea shops, a pharmacy, and more—providing considerate and comfortable vacation living for family trips.

I also stumbled upon a flower shop with many pots of succulents of all sizes displayed outside. They looked so adorable; probably only in a climate like Yunnan's can succulents thrive in such vibrant colors. As someone from the north, I truly envy how easily people here can raise such fleshy beauties.

Ancient Dian Vitality Town helps seniors reconstruct social functions centered on their interests, caring for both physical and mental health, delaying physical decline, improving quality of life, and enabling them to enjoy their later years. Starting from a scientific and proactive concept of senior living, it allows them to create their own lifestyle, rediscover life goals and vitality, pioneering an active and healthy senior care model with advanced concepts.

Dinner was at Yixinyuan in Colorful Yunnan · Ancient Dian Town.

I savored exquisitely prepared dishes—rustic delicacies: eco-friendly pork raised for a year, with incredibly tender meat; free-range chickens that drink morning dew from mountain streams, making soup especially sweet and savory; seasonal eco-friendly vegetables and fruits, packed with natural nutrition. I highly recommend foodies to give it a try.

Head to Colorful Yunnan · Happy World for a joyful adventure! Check in with your bestie, have a blast with your boyfriend/girlfriend, bring the little rascals for some cool fun… Embrace the happiness of the new year 2021!

This amusement park is full of Yunnan flavor, from the rides to the architecture, all quite unique. As one of the super-large amusement parks in Southwest China, it's also perfect for taking kids.

Colorful Yunnan · Happy World features seven themed zones designed in a uniquely novel way: Dian Army Camp, Illusory Dian Wonderland, Childlike Dream World, Myriad Tribes, Primordial Secret Land, Frost Moon Cold Isle, and Four Seasons Flower Sea. There's also an entertainment center built especially for kids—the Baby Paradise.

The park boasts 81 rides, including the Snow Eagle Wide-Wing Roller Coaster, Elephant Play Dragon Roller Coaster, and Twin-Tower Space Shot—large-scale rides that are exceptionally distinctive and thrilling.

[Eye of Dianchi Ferris Wheel]

Arguably the park's icon, this is Yunnan's first super-tall Ferris wheel, standing 108 meters high, designed in the shape of a peacock, a symbol of Yunnan. Riding it offers a sparkling view of Dianchi Lake, the Pearl of the Plateau—an incredible perspective.

[Snow Eagle Wide-Wing Roller Coaster]

You may have ridden many roller coasters, but don't miss this one!

Themed after Yunnan's eagles and the Meili Snow Mountain, it looks super cool and intimidating! Stretching 1,024 meters and reaching 45 meters high, this coaster lets you experience sitting on the edge of a wing, with your legs dangling in the air. Imagine plunging from the height of a 15-story building—isn't that thrilling?

[Twin-Tower Space Shot]

From bottom to top, it shoots you up at high speed, then drops you back down in a rapid descent. One moment you're soaring to the clouds, the next you're plummeting to earth, experiencing gravity and the extreme rush of free fall.

It blasts you to a 56-meter peak in just 2 seconds, giving you a surge of positive G-force, then drops you the equivalent of 19 floors into weightlessness. Up and down, disorienting, each wave more exciting than the last!

[Baby Paradise]

Colorful Yunnan · Happy World isn't just for young ladies; it's also great for kids! I noticed many families with little ones heading to Baby Paradise.

Inside, it's a fairy-tale kingdom like Lilliput—ocean ball pits, mini trains, all favorites for children. Come to Colorful Yunnan · Happy World for a fun family trip and keep those rascals entertained all winter!

[Colorful Express Train]

The Colorful Express is a train line that runs through the entire themed park, harmoniously blending with the surroundings. Taking inspiration from the park's natural features and environment, the train is packaged in a peacock motif. Riding it feels like traveling in a time machine as you tour the Happy World. You can admire the park's beautiful scenery from a lofty, bird's-eye view. Accompanied by park music and lovely vistas, it's an elegant, comfortable, and romantic self-guided journey that soothes the soul.

What also captivates us at Colorful Yunnan · Happy World is the scenery along the way. Surrounded by a riot of colors, it's relaxing and carefree; playing here makes you forget worldly worries. I must say, the environment is amazing, modeled after Southeast Asian architectural styles with pointed roofs and tropical vegetation brought in—so much fun.

I also saw a huge wishing wall, densely covered with wish tags full of blessings, left by friends who have visited before.

After a tiring morning of rides, we spent the afternoon mainly watching shows.

Grab a program schedule, and you can fully enjoy Colorful Yunnan · Happy World. Move to a different venue, and there's a thrilling performance waiting. From morning to night, just immerse yourself wholeheartedly.

[Colorful Yunnan Show]

This is a performance steeped in historical stories and local culture—not highbrow art but something everyone can appreciate.

It integrates the traditional arts of Yunnan's ethnic minorities, presenting stunning folk songs and dances. I confirm, it's a soul-stirring show.

Before entering, you can interact with the park's mascots at the gate! They shake hands and hug children in the audience to show friendliness, creating a great atmosphere.

The show combines 3D holographic projection, a 90-degree curved LED screen, and wraparound wall projection, perfectly presenting Yunnan's folk customs and traditions.

Yunnan is a region where many ethnic groups live together—Zhuang, Yao, Dong, Miao, Yi, and others—harmoniously coexisting and passing down countless beautiful dances and melodious songs. On this enchanting land, beautiful legends have been told since ancient times. The performers are excellent, and the costumes are magnificent. In short, it's an unmissable show.

[Chronicles of Ancient Dian]

The rich variety of performances is a highlight of Colorful Yunnan · Happy World, with over a dozen shows—song and dance, film stunts—running continuously every day. The most representative is undoubtedly Chronicles of Ancient Dian.

The show is majestic and gripping, a classic that showcases well-known and beloved stories. Through the clash of weapons and the mist of history, it brings to life the economic, cultural, and military achievements of Ancient Dian at its peak.

The on-site actors are extremely professional, making it feel like watching a movie! The costumes and props are lavish and exquisite! The performance horses are also very earnest! The powerful audio-visual impact makes the audience feel as if they are right there, leaving a lasting impression.

Every Saturday, Sunday, and on holidays, there's also the [Ancient Dian Grand Parade].

You can see magnificent floats and many wonderful performances.

The performers are very enthusiastic, not only giving their all but also inviting adults and children from the audience to join the fun, creating an incredible atmosphere.

The evening [Peacock Princess Water Show] is another classic.

It was my first time watching such an amazing water show, and I listened intently to a story about the Peacock Princess.

The water show integrates high-tech means like sound, light, electricity, water, and fire, delivering a stunning audio-visual experience.

The performance uses the real landscape as its backdrop and stage, right in front of the giant peacock Ferris wheel. The story revolves around the true love of the Peacock Princess and the Prince—a prince enduring various hardships for his beloved princess, finally reuniting with her. Combined with traditional Yunnan folk culture, the show is highly enjoyable.

Wrap up your day at Colorful Yunnan · Happy World with a [fireworks show]!

Aren't you looking forward to seeing fireworks at an amusement park? Colorful Yunnan · Happy World fulfills that wish! The brilliant fireworks push the day's entertainment to a climax! As one after another blooms in the sky, the night turns enchantingly beautiful once more!

The Ancient Dian Wetland Park is arguably Kunming's largest and most worthwhile wetland park! Covering 110 acres, the park spreads its wings from the center like a giant roc. Tens of thousands of red-billed gulls stop here, adding liveliness and splendor to the winter Ancient Dian.

[Highlights]

Even in winter, the Ancient Dian Wetland Park boasts rich and colorful landscapes. On clear days, distant mountains roll on, ancient trees stand tall, and the Dianchi Lake shimmers with clear ripples—scenery to soothe the soul. The views are worth savoring from morning to night. If you catch the sunset, the stunning shifts in light are even more mesmerizing!

You can ascend the hill via two routes: one is the winding road, where you can walk slowly while admiring the mountains—best for those with time and energy. The other is an artificial staircase, climbing step by step, turning back to enjoy the scenery along the way, gradually revealing the full view of the Ancient Dian Wetland Park.

[Feeding Red-Billed Gulls]

In winter, the arrival of red-billed gulls brings liveliness and cheer to the otherwise quiet Ancient Dian. These little fellows eagerly await treats from visitors' hands.

Red-billed gulls are quite clever; they know following tourists means food.

For maximum fun, toss the food one piece at a time when luring them, so they can catch it. Inexperienced visitors often throw a whole handful, but the gulls only manage to eat a little, wasting much of the food.

Under the blue sky and white clouds, these little ones are incredibly joyful, chirping "zhi zhi," probably delighted by the food. On fine days with enchanting lake and mountain scenery, watching these lovely gulls lifts everyone's spirits.

At the hilltop, there's a large lawn with a giant "LOVE" sign that makes for great photos.

The trestle bridge—the best photo spot in Ancient Dian.

The looped corridor of the trestle bridge connecting the dock resembles a giant dragon resting on the emerald lake. The rustic corridor and the waiting hall reflect charmingly on the water. Walking through it, you feel as if stepping back two thousand years, becoming a witness to history and a reminder of what truly matters in life.

You can rent a bike to cycle around the lake. The wetland has multiple bike paths, and everywhere you look is like nature's palette—perfect for a fun outing with friends.

Among the countless winter pleasures, soaking in a hot spring is a must! In the warm pools, immersed in the steamy atmosphere, you can shed all fatigue and savor a moment of tranquility. A long life needs such moments that make you feel utterly blessed.

[Banshan Private Hot Spring Villa]

The Banshan Private Hot Spring Villa at Ancient Dian requires advance booking to enjoy its exclusive hot springs, and it's an experience not to be missed. It fulfilled almost all my imaginings of a cozy soak: gentle hot springs before me, calm wind, still water, and just by looking up, tranquil scenery. The villa comprises 36 standalone hot spring courtyards, built along the mountain and sculpted by water, as if naturally formed.

I stayed in a two-bedroom, one-courtyard unit. Inside, there's a living room, bedroom, bathroom, dry sauna, therapy room, and mahjong room. The courtyard features a private garden, relaxation pavilion, lounge area, and an independent natural hot spring pool.

My favorite part was the outdoor bathing area—sitting in the pavilion draped with white canopies, immersed in the gentle hot spring while leaning against the edge to gaze at the view. Sip a cup of warm tea at the same time, and it's pure bliss. Fragrant grass, drifting petals, every step reveals a new scene, like a paradise hidden away.

The hot spring water in Ancient Dian has multiple benefits, including pain relief and boosting metabolism, making it an excellent choice to heal a weary body and mind.

Each villa also comes with a private parking space, and guests have convenient access to the 72 outdoor forest hot spring pools and the temperature-controlled swimming pool within the hot spring resort.

[Ancient Dian Hot Spring Villa]

I also love the Ancient Dian Hot Spring Villa, which offers a variety of pools, nestled beside the mountain and facing the lake, with beautiful surroundings.

The outdoor forest hot springs feature 72 pools in total, divided into four themed areas: Ancient Dian Mystic Realm, Cloud Flower Fragrant Path, Tea Zen Meditation Zone, and Jade Terrace of Qiong. Each area offers a different atmosphere and experience in terms of architectural style, vegetation, and artistic decorations.

Small bridges over flowing water, winding paths leading to secluded spots—this is the perfect description. Gentle sunlight warms the plants, and pools of all sizes peek out from the greenery, creating an otherworldly ambiance.

With different pools, different temperatures, and different sensations on your skin, you can freely switch between hot and cold, deeply awakening your skin's senses and experiencing unprecedented bodily limits.

Be sure not to miss the infinity pool at the hilltop, the Jade Pool of Qiong, where you can bathe in sunset rays over Dianchi—this is the very essence of "stirring the lake and bathing in twilight."

At sunset, the rosy light serves as a canopy, Dianchi Lake as a mat, and the sky within reach turns from pink to burnt orange. In the infinity hot spring at the hilltop, the sunset glow reflects in the water, and you bathe as if immersed in light.

In the warm winter season, what I look forward to most is a soak at the Ancient Dian Hot Spring—a reward for a year of hard work and, in my opinion, the best year-end treat.

[Muyuntai Dining]

Dinner was at Muyuntai. This is the exclusive breakfast venue for guests of the Banshan Private Hot Spring Villa, where they can enjoy an undisturbed morning meal. The restaurant also serves Chinese and Western lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea to hot spring resort visitors and food enthusiasts from outside.

It's a very secluded and delightful spot, blending the raw essence of countryside woods with tasteful modern art decorations. Dragged-in dead branches, dried grapevines, rough clay pots—once placed in the right context, they become elegant ornaments.

Here, you'll find unforgettable Sichuan and Yunnan dishes, intriguing wild fruits and vegetables, and a variety of tea-based meals. It's well worth a try.

We had a very Yunnan-style dinner—a bountiful feast! An old saying in Yunnan goes: "In spring, eat flowers; in summer, eat insects; in autumn, eat fruits; in winter, eat all." The table was laden with wild delicacies so fresh you could devour an entire bowl of rice, and savory meat dishes so addictive you can't put down your chopsticks: herb-roasted fish, Dai-style tea-scented chicken, mixed wild vegetables, fried dried beef, bumper harvest platter, triangle rice cakes—each with its own distinctive character.

[Temperature-Controlled Swimming Pool]

The temperature-controlled pool is located at the entrance of the hot spring resort, a comfortable place for swimming, showering, and relaxing.

It's an indoor pool, 30 meters long and 15 meters wide, using an advanced constant-temperature system that keeps the water between 27°C and 32°C, with 24-hour circulation and replenishment, so you can swim worry-free. The facility provides free lockers, towels, slippers, shower gel, and other amenities, reflecting thoughtful service in every detail.

The Ancient Dian Dora Cute Pet Paradise is a family-friendly zoo with top-notch aesthetics.

It's the country's first open-air outdoor ecological petting zoo. Breaking away from traditional zoo modes, it forgoes cages and buildings, with most areas covered by natural vegetation, as if you were strolling through forests and grasslands.

Covering over 150 mu, the first phase features thirteen themed zones, including a squirrel area, black-nosed sheep area, meerkat area, capybara area, a giant rainbow slide, and a riding field. Visit the animals' "homes," observe their life in nature, interact intimately with animals, nature, ecology, and the environment, and reshape the relationship between humans and animals, as well as between humans and nature.

Opening hours: 10:00-18:00

The animals here are carefully selected from hundreds of species worldwide—cute, harmless, and naturally inclined to interact with humans. Under the blue sky and white clouds, they roam freely. Here, humans and animals bridge the gap of cages, interacting closely and unleashing innocence and love. It's absolutely a paradise for children!

The pets are kept in an open outdoor space, living and playing without constraints. Each animal demonstrates its natural daily life to visitors, passing on good cheer to every guest.

At Dora Cute Pet Paradise, the animals are the true hosts, and every visitor is warmly welcomed as a guest by the pet families. The "hosts" and their visiting guests coexist in delightful harmony.

Besides the animals, the park itself is uniquely designed—rising step by step along the mountain slope, each spot offers a different perspective with lush, colorful landscapes. There's also a distinctive Hobby Street, with tiny, colorful houses that kids love to play in.

Lively squirrels await the children's feeding! They've been trained not to fear visitors and will scamper after anyone with food, adorably silly.

Unlike traditional amusement parks, this place emphasizes children's participation and interaction, embracing the philosophy of returning to simplicity and merging with nature. Kids scatter food while running and jumping, and the squirrels rush over in a flurry, scrambling for snacks—hilarious and endlessly entertaining!

The alpacas here seem to live in a fairy tale, with cute little houses and white fences that transport you into a storybook land. Here, unleash your childlike wonder and get up close with nature.

These alpacas are stunningly beautiful! The white ones are impeccably clean, the black ones full of spirit! Each one is meticulously groomed. You can feed these cuties to your heart's content, interact with them, and take photos—they won't refuse. The kids have an absolute blast.

There are also super adorable raccoons, gentle-natured and perfect for children to feed.

These little guys are naturally dopey-cute; they'll stand up and reach for the kids' treats! Plump and round, they look even more lovable.

The Crowne Plaza Kunming Ancient Dian Town is in a prime location—not far from the Ancient Dian Hot Spring Villa, the Happy World, and the Dora Cute Pet Paradise. It's also a pet-friendly hotel, so you can bring your own cats and dogs on vacation!

The lobby design is elegant with ample space. During Christmas, it was adorned with many lights and presents, creating a strong festive atmosphere.

The family rooms are fantastic, equipped with bunk beds, little tents, and various toys specially prepared for kids. They even distinguish between boys' and girls' rooms, each decorated with different themes—a truly thoughtful touch!

The hotel gym is also excellent, high-standard and open 24 hours, with a great view. The swimming pool is large and heated year-round; active guests shouldn't miss it.

This hotel is both stylish and sweet—it has luxurious suites for business travelers and also caters to vacationers' girlish hearts with delightful afternoon teas.

? Hotel Environment:

? This hotel isn't as stern and business-like as the typical Crowne Plaza image; instead, it's full of cute elements. Located in a resort area, it's perfect for families with kids and pets.

? The hotel's environment draws heavily from local Yunnan character. All plants are real—they refuse to use fake ones for decoration. Though maintenance costs are high, the air is fresh and pleasing to the senses.

In the book "The Lofty Message of Forests and Streams," Song Dynasty painter Guo Xi proposed a unique Chinese "aesthetics of dwelling." He believed that people travel because their hearts yearn for a distant place where "without leaving the main hall, one can exhaustively enjoy springs and valleys," a place that is "habitable and enjoyable." Among travels, "dwelling" is key. "Dwelling" is not just a spatial expression; it embodies a distinctive daily aesthetic and lifestyle.

In Ancient Dian, dwelling transcends the concept of mere physical space. It is vivid and tangible, visible and palpable. In Ancient Dian, with scenery that renews itself each day, sooner or later you will discover the ideal life you have long been seeking.
