2021 Ultimate Yunnan Travel Guide – How to Explore Yunnan with Zero Stress
As an experienced traveler, I want to warn everyone: Yunnan’s attractions are incredibly spread out. Figuring out bus routes is a headache, plus you’ve got hotels, entrance tickets, and a million other hassles. Without a local to guide you and explain the sights, you’ll miss the real highlights and waste time on wrong turns and backtracking. Right after inter-provincial travel resumed, my bestie and I took off for Yunnan. Our entire 6-day trip covered 5 nights in star-rated hotels, a hot-spring hotel, a lake-view room right on Erhai Lake, plus attraction tickets, local transfers, a guide’s fee, meals, insurance – everything! When we added it up, each of us spent just over 1,000 yuan for 6 days!
We went with a top-notch guide named Ashima who arranged our whole itinerary. Every little detail – hotels, tickets, transport, guide, meals – was taken care of by Ashima, so we didn’t have to worry about a thing.
I can’t thank Ashima enough for designing our travel plan and handling everything. It made the trip so relaxing. This Yunnan trip covered all the must-sees: Kunming, Dali, Erhai Lake, the Stone Forest, Lijiang Ancient Town, Shuhe Ancient Town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain – we hit them all!
I’ve put our itinerary below in case it helps you:
Day 1: Arrive in Kunming, 24-hour airport pickup – check into hotel
Day 2: Morning at the 5A national scenic spot Stone Forest + Chuxiong Yi Ancient Town. Afternoon: sample the local wild mushroom hot pot, evening bonfire party
Day 3: Full Erhai Lake loop tour, open-top Jeep, luxury private yacht + cormorant fishing show + Luo Quan Peninsula. Afternoon: Cangshan, Butterfly Spring. Evening: local Eight Bowl Feast and Erhai sand-pot fish
Day 4: Dali Ancient Town, Foreigner Street, Lashihai. Afternoon: panoramic view of Lijiang Ancient Town from Mufu, enjoy the Lishui Jinsha song and dance show. Evening: Naxi wedding banquet
Day 5: Morning wander through the quiet, rustic Shuhe Ancient Town. Afternoon: ascend the 4,680m Jade Dragon Snow Mountain + Glacier Cableway + Blue Moon Valley + Baishui River
Day 6: Visit Asia’s largest flower market, then 24-hour transfer to airport or train station based on your flight.
For just over 1,000 yuan per person for 6 days, I honestly think this arrangement was fantastic.
P.S. Only Ashima’s itinerary includes all four ancient towns, and she also arranges a professional travel photographer to follow you around so you can take home gorgeous photos. Both are super important.
Here’s a peek at our actual day-by-day experience – you can use it as a route reference for your own trip. The whole journey was relaxed, with no forced shopping or hidden costs. Everything was pre-arranged before we even landed in Kunming.
Day 1: Airport pickup at Kunming Changshui Airport – check into hotel – Yunnan night vibes
We arrived in the afternoon, a bit delayed, but Ashima’s driver was still waiting for us, which felt so thoughtful. After checking into the pre-booked hotel, we had free time to wander backstreets, or check out spots like Green Lake Park, East Temple Street, West Temple Pagoda, or the Jiangwu Hall in Kunming.
Day 2: Stone Forest – experience a ‘World Natural Heritage’ wonder + Yi-style lunch
After breakfast, we headed to the 5A Stone Forest Scenic Area. We explored the karst wonderland, listening to the stories each stone tells, visiting sights like Ashima’s Transformation Rock, Sword Peak Pond, View Peak Pavilion, Double Birds Feeding, Stone Forest Lake, and the Stone Forest itself.
Day 3: Erhai Lake loop, open-top Jeep, luxury private yacht + cormorant show + Luo Quan Peninsula – Cangshan – Butterfly Spring
After breakfast, a whole new experience on the western shore of Erhai Lake. We hopped into a cool open-top Jeep, snapping photos all the way to freeze your most unforgettable moments! Let this youthful trip become a lifelong memory. If you want professional videography, you can arrange it with Ashima in advance.
After lunch, we boarded a private yacht to soak in the most beautiful Erhai scenery. No crowds, no noise – just a 360-degree cruise around the dreamy lake on your own yacht, fully savoring your Erhai time and a deep ‘encounter’ with the lake.
Day 4: Dali Ancient Town, Foreigner Street, Lashihai – afternoon panoramic view from Mufu, Lishui Jinsha show – evening Naxi wedding feast
Dali Ancient Town, also known as Yeyu City, Forbidden City, or Zhonghe Town, was rebuilt in 1382 (Ming Dynasty). The gate’s ‘Dali’ characters are from calligraphy by Guo Moruo. Inside, the street layout is a classic chessboard pattern; old residences still hide in the alleys, offering glimpses of bygone days, with courtyards lush with flowers, bird song, and streams trickling along outdoor channels.
After lunch, we traveled to Lijiang. Lishui Jinsha is a dance and poetry performance that gathers the unique highland cultural spirit of northwestern Yunnan and the ancient treasures of the Naxi kingdom. It selects the most iconic cultural images of Lijiang’s ethnic groups, using water, mountains, and emotion to fully showcase Lijiang’s distinctive and profound culture.
Day 5: Quiet ancient Shuhe Town, the 4,680m Jade Dragon Snow Mountain + Glacier Cableway + Blue Moon Valley + Baishui River
After breakfast, we went to Shuhe Ancient Town, an important stop on the Tea Horse Road. In Naxi language, it’s called ‘Shaowu’, one of the earliest Naxi settlements in the Lijiang basin. It’s a well-preserved market town on the ancient tea route, a living fossil of the Naxi transition from farming to commerce, and a model of town-building shaped by openness and caravan trade. Shuhe is a vital part of the Lijiang Old Town World Heritage site and was named a CCTV ‘China Charming Town’ in 2005.
Day 6: Asia’s largest flower market, 24-hour transfer to airport or train station based on your flight.
