In the heart of July summer, take your bestie to Ancient Dian Town and embrace the feel of spring!
If you ask me where my favorite travel destination is, I would tell you without hesitation – Yunnan!
Every city in Yunnan has its own unique charm, and I love Kunming the most, where it’s like spring all year round. Every day here is blue skies, white clouds, and endless clear weather. Summer in Kunming is like spring in Chongqing, with an average temperature of only 22°C, making it perfect for a cool summer getaway.
How to spend a weekend leisurely exploring the best of the Spring City?
Well… I think the Colorful Yunnan Ancient Dian Town is definitely the top choice. The Ancient Dian Town resort area combines culture, tourism, and health & retirement living into one integrated vacation hub. Here you can enjoy the soothing hot springs and rediscover childlike joy and your own happiness in the Happy World!
So grab your bestie and head to Ancient Dian Town for a joyful midsummer break!
Ancient Dian Hot Spring Villa
Day 1: Arrive at Kunming Colorful Yunnan Ancient Dian Town Resort
– Dora Cute Pet Paradise – Bosu Camp 8000
Day 2: Ancient Dian Hot Spring Villa – Ancient Dian Mid-hill Hot Spring Hotel (watch the sunset from the infinity pool)
Day 3: Colorful Yunnan Ancient Dian Happy World (an amusement park loved by both kids and adults)
A slow-paced trip is all about enjoyment, and good accommodation makes the journey even more perfect. When visiting Ancient Dian Town in Kunming, I recommend the Crowne Plaza Hotel. From the balcony of your room, you can see the Eye of Dian Lake Ferris Wheel! Plus, it’s very close to Colorful Yunnan Happy World and the Ancient Dian Hot Springs.
The hotel is located inside the Colorful Yunnan Ancient Dian Town scenic area. Its exterior is stylish and grand, while the interior is understatedly luxurious and elegant. It takes only about half an hour by car from Kunming High-Speed Rail Station, very convenient.
The moment I stepped into the room, I think I fell in love with it. The simple vintage style of the guest room is exactly what I like; the warm-toned lighting is very soothing, and the ergonomically designed soft pillows and duvet allow your tired body to sleep peacefully. In leisure moments, sitting in the room, listening to music, sipping a cup of coffee is just so wonderful...
The room is fully equipped with everything you need: an in-room safe, satellite TV, refrigerator, a private sitting area, and a simple yet elegant desk.
Apart from themed guest rooms and family rooms, the hotel has another unique feature – rare pet-friendly suites, which is a very thoughtful design for visitors who travel with their furry friends. Each room comes with pet snacks and a private lawn courtyard for pets to play in. You can feel the hotel’s care and attention to detail in every corner.
For those who love sports, don’t miss the indoor heated swimming pool, the huge tennis courts, basketball courts, and the gym!!
Ancient Dian Resort Hotel
When visiting Ancient Dian Town, you have multiple accommodation options. Besides the Crowne Plaza, there’s the Ancient Dian Resort Hotel with family-style suites. The hotel offers both Chinese and European decor styles, and the supporting facilities are very complete, including all the daily appliances and high-end kitchen and bathroom fixtures you need – washing machine, refrigerator, air conditioner, heated toilet seat, and more, plus a private balcony! The hotel is also surrounded by restaurants, a food court, a supermarket, a gym, and a yoga studio.
At Dora Cute Pet Paradise, I had my first zero-distance close encounter with little animals and was completely charmed by these adorable and interesting creatures!
Dora Cute Pet Paradise is an outdoor pet park integrated with nature. Here, there are no cages separating people and animals; you can safely touch, feed, and let your happy inner child run free. The animals here aren’t all that different from those in a zoo, but I like this place much more because Dora feels closer to a natural forest.
As you enter Dora Cute Pet Paradise, just follow the tour route signs and you’ll experience all the highlights. The park has 17 play areas: Squirrel Tribe, Black-nosed Sheep League, Kangaroo Settlement, Capybara Hot Spring, Piglet Racing Track, Cute Rabbit Zone, Marmot Area, Meerkat Elf, Raccoon Domain, Alpaca Pasture, Riding Hunting Ground, etc., with 35 species and nearly 300 cute animals.
Here, alpacas can walk freely on the paths, black-nosed sheep can stroll leisurely, marmots can dig to their heart’s content, and guinea pigs and little raccoons can swim happily. Compared to the zoos I’ve visited before, where animals are locked in indoor cages, those poor creatures really have it hard. Moreover, every animal zone here has professional guides explaining the animals’ natural habitats, behaviors, and other fun facts. There are also super interesting cute animal behavior shows like ‘Piglet Racing’ almost every hour, which are really fun to watch!
You may also encounter peacocks wandering right past you, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a real animal world. At the end of the tour route, there’s a huge rainbow slide that’s totally Instagram-worthy, paired with a sandpit. I couldn’t resist sliding down several times – so much fun!
Bosu Camp 8000 is located inside Ancient Dian Town. For outdoor sports lovers, this is an absolute top spot. The whole camp is filled with lush greenery, and the summer breeze gently blows, allowing you to breathe fresh air to your heart’s content.
The camp also offers exciting activities like rock climbing, rope courses, dirt track biking, and live-action CS games. Inside spaces that look like shipping containers, there are eight climbing walls of varying difficulty, and professional instructors teach high-altitude climbing techniques, so you don’t need to worry about whether you can do it – it’s just about whether you dare!
Soaking in a hot spring on a trip is undoubtedly one of life’s great pleasures!
As a large-scale comprehensive resort, Ancient Dian Town definitely comes with hot springs. As the saying goes, ‘watching water is not as good as playing in water’. Only when you truly experience the comfort of hot spring bathing can you more perfectly enjoy the beauty of your journey.
The entire Hot Spring Villa is built on the mountain slope, a real secret mountain garden. While soaking, you can admire the beautiful mountain forest scenery – just imagine how wonderful! The villa has 72 outdoor hot spring pools, divided into four themed areas: Ancient Dian Secret Land, Fragrant Cloud Blossom Trail, Tea Zen Serenity, and Jade Terrace Delight. Each area has a different ambience and therapeutic effect. Pick any pool and you’ll experience the superior natural beauty of Kunming, with a faint floral fragrance in the air that can wash away all everyday worries.
The hot spring water here comes from a natural source 2,622 meters underground. Known as the ‘Spring City’, Kunming has no bitter cold in winter or scorching heat in summer. Even in summer, the temperature won’t get high. Lying in the rose pool, thin wisps of steam float on the water’s surface; gently sweeping your arm across the water, you feel the 38-degree current hugging your skin, incredibly comfortable.
Jade Terrace Delight is the best infinity pool at the mountaintop, where you can overlook the entire Ancient Dian area and the Eye of Dian Lake. At sunset, wait for a gentle evening glow and feel the romantic caress of the sunset on your skin – life is truly worth living. For girls who love taking photos, I recommend going early in the morning or in the evening, when there are fewer people and you can enjoy it all to yourself.
The most romantic thing is to be immersed in the mountaintop infinity pool while the sunset colors are soft, embracing the beauty of Dian Lake, ordering a favorite soft drink or dessert, and bidding farewell to the sun as you return to the slow pace nestled between mountain and lake!
Right by the pool, there’s a perfectly matched bar. The cocktails here are very suitable for ladies – sweet and low in alcohol. Enjoy a sip with your bestie and get slightly tipsy in this landscape painting.
The Muyuntai Restaurant at the mountaintop is a wonderful place to relax after the hot spring bath. It serves local Yunnan specialties and exquisite afternoon tea. Dining here at sunset lets you take in both the scenery and the delicious food.
Ancient Dian Mid-hill Hot Spring Hotel
The Ancient Dian Mid-hill Hot Spring Hotel also comes with a garden and a private hot spring pool. If you don’t want to be disturbed, this is the perfect choice!
The private pool environment blends cleverly with the entire Hot Spring Villa. Not only can you enjoy an exclusive private pool, but during your stay you can also enjoy unlimited access to the 72 outdoor pools. Every moment here is pure bliss, and there’s also butler-style attentive service. If you want to dine at Muyuntai, the staff can call a shuttle car for you in advance.
If you eat here, you can also experience the specialties of Yunnan’s Dai ethnic group. Every small dish is exquisite and delicious, especially the grilled fish and grilled chicken with citronella. Lemongrass grilled fish is a classic Dai dish, cooked with local lemongrass over an open flame, giving it an irresistible aroma, crispy skin, and a fresh, unique flavor.
Tip: It’s recommended to soak for about 20-30 minutes at a time, eat something and hydrate during breaks to avoid dizziness or fatigue.
A must-visit amusement park in Kunming: Colorful Yunnan Happy World
Here you can let loose and release the passion of summer~
I happened to catch the Midsummer Carnival at Colorful Yunnan Happy World. Every day there are various performances with Ancient Dian characteristics. This summer, jump into a fresh, exciting play mode, and at night there’s a music and beer party, bonfire evening, and a colorful fireworks show…
The entire Happy World is steeped in rich Dian culture. Upon entering the park, it’s a good idea to pick up a guide map and choose your preferred routes first.
Colorful Yunnan Happy World is one of the core attractions of the Ancient Dian Town resort. The park is huge, divided into 7 themed zones (Dian Army Camp, Fantasy Yunnan Wonderland, Childhood Dream World, All Vientiane Tribe, Primeval Secret Land, Frost Moon Cold Islet, Four Seasons Flower Sea) with 81 rides. It’s a one-ticket-all-included experience, and there are also many international song and dance shows, ethnic dance performances, and float parades. Even a whole day isn’t enough to exhaust the fun!
Seeing the Eye of Dian Lake Ferris Wheel up close was still deeply impressive. It’s the world’s first peacock-themed extra-large Ferris wheel with ethnic features, reaching a height of 108 meters. I’d recommend riding it at dusk, as the sun sets, it’s a uniquely special experience.
Sitting in a cabin of the Eye of Dian Lake, as the cabin slowly rises, the whole Happy World unfolds beneath you. Go with your loved one to soak up the romantic sweetness and feel the joy of childhood. When you reach the very top, where you’re closest to the angels, make a sincere wish, and it may come true in the near future.
The Twin-Tower Space Shot is like a rocket launcher. Within seconds, it catapults you from the ground 56 meters into the air, then you free-fall. Just when your heart has been lifted, suddenly you plummet into a tear-jerking situation – this completely tests the limits of your courage! Weightlessness is nothing; what you want is sheer thrill and danger.
Throughout the park, you can always see stunt performances from various countries and flash mobs of different ethnic groups.
I couldn’t resist riding all the roller coasters one by one. The Elephant-Dragon Roller Coaster shoots you out like a bullet at 105 km/h, and everyone experiences speed and excitement amid screams – that’s how you play hard in summer.
The Snow Eagle Wide Wing Roller Coaster – anyone who’s ridden it knows how thrilling it is. It spins 360 degrees; there’s no track beneath the seats, your legs dangle completely in mid-air, and the view under your feet directly fills your eyes. With a total length of 1024 meters, you slowly ascend to the dive point and can take a deep breath, taking in the scenery from 45 meters high, before plunging from nearly 15 stories. It truly feels like a moment of freedom, like an eagle, leaving you with a heart-pounding experience.
On scorching summer days, I love water rides best. The Tiger Leaping Gorge ride, with its two mighty tiger heads, is visible from afar. Sitting in a raft that slowly advances, you experience a thrilling escape from the tiger’s jaws amid surging waves, a rapid dive plunging into the pool, splashing water everywhere. There is some weightlessness, but it’s much more joyful than a roller coaster. Be sure to bring a raincoat and shoe covers; feel the coolness and be mentally prepared to get soaked.
Join the grandly styled Wanxiang Mine Cart to begin a gold-rush journey. The cart rushes freely along the track under gravity, with winding left and right turns, both delightful and thrilling.
The High-Flying Swing doesn’t produce intense weightlessness. Once it reaches a certain height, you’re essentially lying sideways in the air, like a little bird flying freely.
At 15:30, the Midsummer Carnival Grand Parade takes place on the main road of the park. Different stylish formations, gorgeous floats, exquisite costumes, graceful performances, surprising mechanical effects, and highly immersing music – the visual and auditory atmosphere instantly throws you into a carnival feast. The parade is mainly based on Yunnan’s ethnic characteristics, and the performers enthusiastically say hi to everyone.
It’s a wonderful journey through a happy world, filled with a passionate, vigorous, and vibrant atmosphere, plus immersive music – a visual and auditory carnival feast.
Don’t miss the ‘Ancient Dian Heroic Tale’ at the Ancient Dian Stunt Theater. The show is about 30 minutes long, a live-action special effects performance set against the backdrop of wars between the ancient Dian Kingdom and neighboring tribes over two thousand years ago, during the Western Han Dynasty. It features various high-difficulty wire stunts, horse-riding stunts, water and explosion effects, and performances that transport the audience into a magnificent and blood-pumping ‘Ancient Dian War’ time-space. It’s a must-see Ancient Dian specialty.
The show opens with a grand sacrificial ceremony. The stunning spectacle and ritual feel have enough appeal to highlight the important sacrificial culture of the Dian Kingdom, reflecting the kingdom’s prosperity, mystery, and sacredness. It also foreshadows the later battle and the appearance of the Winged Tiger God at the end.
The performance has five acts, and each one pulls you completely into it, especially the rotating horse battles, water battles, siege battles, and hand-to-hand combat that present exciting, intense, and climactic historical scenes.
The ‘Flying Over Colorful Yunnan’ in the Flying Cinema is truly a must-see. In 10 minutes, it takes you ‘through the air’ to experience the magnificent landscapes of beautiful Yunnan. The seats change angles along with the scenes, and mist is sprayed from overhead to match the picture – pure visual delight.
‘Colorful Yunnan’ integrates the traditional arts of Yunnan’s ethnic minorities and is a newly created, dazzling collection of folk songs and dances that showcase the beauty of Great Yunnan. Combined with 3D holographic projection, a 90-degree curved LED screen, and wraparound wall projection, it perfectly presents the extraordinary traditional charm of Yunnan’s folklore and the breathtaking modern beauty of its splendid landscape.
Happy World, Midsummer Carnival Season
As night falls, the evening carnival at Happy World kicks off in full passion. The collision of beer, music, fireworks, and bonfires brings a different kind of ‘Midsummer Carnival’ charm. While everyone drinks and chats cheerily, passionate and fiery dancers appear as dynamic music plays, and the whole beer party explodes the summer night!
At the night market in the scenic area, there’s also a dazzling array of Yunnan-style snacks. Over 50 specialty dishes from 10 Southeast Asian countries gather here, sure to satisfy every food lover.
After enjoying the music and food, the bonfire party has already begun. The excitement from alcohol hasn’t quieted down yet, and the midsummer bonfire carnival fever starts to heat up! Everyone dances Dai-style around the bonfire, guaranteed to get you totally pumped! With such strong rhythm and super loud music, it’s a massive open-air dance party. Are you sure you won’t join in??
At the end of the fun, there’s the most brilliant firework show. Colorful fireworks bloom in the night sky of Colorful Yunnan, reflecting everyone’s smiling faces, leaving a beautiful memory and drawing a perfect full stop to our trip.
The summer breeze stirs a restless heart. Beer, bonfires, a huge party – let’s make some noise at the Ancient Dian Happy World Midsummer Carnival Night…
