Yunnan's Yuanmou Earth Forest, Luliang Colorful Sand Forest, and Lunan Stone Forest are collectively known as the 'Three Forests of Yunnan,' unique geological tourist landscapes in Yunnan Province. Among them, Lunan Stone Forest, thanks to early development, convenient transportation (about 80 km from Kunming), and the boost from the hit movie Ashima years ago, has become widely known and a must-visit hotspot for tour groups in Yunnan. In contrast, the Yuanmou Earth Forest and especially the Luliang Colorful Sand Forest have only gradually come into tourists' sight in recent years. Therefore, even today, not many people know about these two Yunnan attractions, and even fewer have visited and explored them.

In fact, although Yunnan's Yuanmou Earth Forest and Luliang Colorful Sand Forest are still relatively niche destinations, when their unique and colorful natural landscapes are revealed to the world, they are truly breathtaking.
In May 2019, during our road trip in Yunnan, we visited these two scenic spots one after another and left with wonderful impressions. A trip here requires little time, effort, or expense, yet allows you to appreciate nature's marvelous masterpieces amidst these unique landscapes, making it truly worthwhile. Their distinctive scenery is well worth sharing. If you travel to Yunnan and are interested, do visit and take a look; you will definitely be amazed and feasted your eyes.

The Yuanmou Earth Forest is a general term for the earth forests in Chuxiong, often referring specifically to the Wumao Earth Forest in Yuanmou. Yunnan's earth forests are widely distributed, with the best being the Wumao, Banguo, and Langbapu earth forests in Yuanmou County. The earliest developed was Wumao (also known as Hutiaotan Earth Forest; the usual 'Yuanmou Earth Forest' scenic spot refers to this one), followed by Langbapu, while Banguo remains the most pristine. The Yuanmou Earth Forest is a cluster of columnar landforms shaped by earth deposits, named because they look like a forest from afar. It is a fantastic natural wonder in China and the world. After millions of years of crustal movements, wind and rain have sculpted the land into countless bizarre shapes. Stepping into the forest, the myriad forms transport you to a strange new world. The site is filled with towering earth pillars resembling massive art installations; the minerals mixed in the earth reflect strange and beautiful colors under sunlight, giving the forest a rich variety of ever-changing postures that make you marvel at nature's craftsmanship.

Luliang Colorful Sand Forest is located 18 km southeast of Luliang County in Qujing City, and is mainly known for its natural sand pillars and peaks. Formed by weathering and erosion, it features layered peaks. Dominated by red, yellow, and white, and accented with blue, black, and gray, the forest displays magnificent colors that change with seasons, weather, sunlight, and viewing angles, hence the name Colorful Sand Forest. It is a famous geological tourist attraction. Its unique geological structure, shaped by thousands of years of wind and rain, creates a dreamlike world of vibrant colors and diverse forms. The sand forest originates from mineral-rich sandstone. On close observation, you'll see the colors shift with sunlight into different hues—red, white, yellow, gray, black—and photographs can capture an infinite variety of changes. Especially at dusk, the layered effect becomes more pronounced and rich.

1. Yuanmou Earth Forest and Luliang Colorful Sand Forest are located in two different directions from Kunming. Yuanmou Earth Forest is about 220 km from Kunming; Luliang Colorful Sand Forest is about 130 km.
2. Both scenic areas are not too far from the city, with little climbing required, so the physical demand is low and suitable for most visitors. However, public transport is still not very convenient; driving yourself is best. The scenic spots have large parking lots, making parking easy.
3. Weather is crucial; especially for Luliang Colorful Sand Forest, overcast or rainy days will greatly diminish the spectacle.
4. Yuanmou Earth Forest is located in Yuanmou County, Chuxiong Prefecture, 32 km from the county seat. It is a paradise for photographers and a popular filming location. Driving from Kunming takes about 3 hours.

5. When visiting Yuanmou Earth Forest, you can take a scenic shuttle to the mountaintop viewing platform, then walk down the winding stone steps and paths, enjoying the earth forest scenery up close all the way to the exit. This makes the visit more relaxed.
6. Colorful Sand Forest is located in Luliang County, Qujing. Driving from Kunming takes less than 2 hours. If you visit after Lunan Stone Forest, it's just over half an hour away. Less famous than the Stone Forest, it sees fewer tourists and offers a peaceful place to enjoy the scenery.
7. In recent years, the Colorful Sand Forest scenic area has undergone large-scale infrastructure improvements, and facilities are now quite complete.
8. The sand sculpture area of the Colorful Sand Forest hosts an annual international sand sculpture competition, and some outstanding works from past events are left on display. These diverse sand sculptures blend nature and culture, enriching the visitor experience.
