Day 1: Arrive in Kunming after a long journey

Stepping into Kunming for the first time, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a wonderful dinner filled with ethnic flair:

Restaurant: Old Dian Mountain Village · Yunnan Specialty Ethnic Cuisine

During dinner, performers in traditional costumes would pop up in different corners of the restaurant, singing heartfelt songs and putting on lively ethnic celebrations one after another.

What a perfect welcome ceremony to start the trip—it definitely got me even more excited about the journey ahead!

Here are a few more food spots recommended by friends—you can pick based on your own taste:

🔺 Yixi Gong Mosque Food Shop

🔺 Daguan Street Big Crispy Beef Noodles

🔺 1910 South Railway Station

Day 2: Head to Jianshui County in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture – the capital of flavors

The ancient city of Jianshui is a celebrated food lover’s paradise. Shows like A Bite of China and Chef Nic have both filmed here.

The tofu here is absolutely delicious—make sure to give it a try!

There's chili sauce on the side to add, so comforting, hahaha!

The fried tofu skin is incredible; I couldn't stop eating bite after bite!

If you can’t get enough, you can also buy some soy products to take home.

You can even try your hand at making tofu with the local aunties—look how clumsy and busy my hands were!

Jianshui’s famous tofu owes a lot to its water. Visit the large ancient well to appreciate how people drew water in the old days.

Local villagers still use this well today—you can chat with them and learn a thing or two; they are all super warm and welcoming.

Restaurant: Xiang Man Lou

Address: No. 63-6, Hanlin Street

The dishes are very authentic and local:

Recommended specialties:

⚪ Hani Terraced Field Fish

⚪ Rice Tofu in Sizzling Broth

⚪ Wild Vegetable and Peanut Soup

Most were local dishes I’d never seen before—so refreshing and novel!

Even the side dishes fascinated me. I especially loved their pickles; I finished one bowl and unabashedly asked for another.

The courtyard is also stunningly beautiful:

It draws many photography enthusiasts to capture its charm. During our meal, we saw uncles carrying camera gear coming in especially to check out the place.

Every decorative detail carries a sense of antiquity, full of character.

There’s another restaurant in the ancient city of Jianshui that was featured on Chef Nic:

It's a classic, time-honored establishment. If you want to visit, remember to go early—shops here tend to close quite early in the evening.

At night, take a walk around the ancient city gate to soak in the mood:

I absolutely loved the moonlight here—the crescent moon hanging high above the gate tower made the scene simply breathtaking!

Note that the ancient gate is surrounded by busy roads with constant traffic, so be careful and watch out for vehicles while enjoying the view!

More food spots in the ancient city of Jianshui that you might also want to try:

🔺 Zixing Roast Duck and Cold Dishes Shop

Day 3: Sunset at Yuanyang Rice Terraces

Stand on a high point at the Yuanyang Rice Terraces and take in the awe-inspiring view looking down on the terraced fields.

The beauty at sunset:

After chasing the sunset, find a small restaurant and try some fried grasshoppers:

Hahaha, don’t let their looks put you off. My friends were all forced to try one, and soon they were happily reaching for more—definitely worth a try!

Relax tonight, because tomorrow we’re waking up early to watch the sunrise!!!

Day 4: Sunrise at Yuanyang Rice Terraces

Set off at 5 a.m. to the viewing platform and wait!

There were already so many people waiting at the viewing platform! In the pitch-dark early morning, professional photographers had long set up their equipment. You need to go early to secure a good spot.

While waiting for the sunrise, I sang the song 'My Motherland and I'—so emotionally charged!

I encountered heavy fog and didn’t capture that dream sunrise. If you’re keen, I suggest going yourself and trying your luck.

After the sunrise, let's visit Azheke:

Here, you’ll find some original thatched stone houses preserved, showcasing a seamless blend of 'forest – village – terraces – river – sea of clouds'—a living cultural and natural landscape. It is one of the best-preserved ancient Hani villages still in existence in China.

You can walk along the paths and into the terrace fields.

We passed by a hotel named Twelve Manor · Xiang Dian, and I highly recommend stepping inside:

Even if you’re not staying there, you can still go in and enjoy a cup of tea!

The indoor decoration is brimming with ethnic charm.

You can also try on traditional ethnic costumes and take photos, enjoying an ethnic-style afternoon tea.

The rooftop terrace has its own special flavor too:

Floor-to-ceiling glass railings are there for safety. Walk closer and you can take in the rice terrace scenery in one sweeping glance—absolutely picture-perfect.

This is the kind of view that produces stunning photos.

Day 5: Crossing the Tropic of Cancer in Pu’er, Yunnan

The Tropic of Cancer marks a symbolic line—once you cross it, you’re officially inside the tropics. Doesn’t that call for a ceremonial feast?

Restaurant: Man Han Shao Dai Hand-Grabbed Rice

A peacock-shaped presentation is lifelike and impressive, full of ceremony. And the key point—it actually tastes really good!

My friends also recommended these restaurants for your reference:

🔺 Lao Iced Coffee

🔺 Nice Truffle Soup Beef House – can be boiled or grilled

Day 6: Man Dan Village of the Dai People, Xishuangbanna

After crossing the Tropic of Cancer, we’re into a tropical journey!

Tropical fruits are waving us over, haha~~

The villagers in Man Dan are incredibly genuine:

There’s the hardworking granny weaving cloth,

and the grandpa weaving bamboo baskets.

Every stitch, every strip—crafted through their tireless efforts.

You can also try learning some Dai language—yes, I picked up a few phrases back then, hahaha!

The Dai ethnic group is best known for the peacock dance, but what I felt strongly here was the culture of the elephant-foot drum:

I can now say that I’ve learned to play the elephant-foot drum, hahahahaha...

End the day with a bonfire party... This cultural journey is truly complete and satisfying!

Day 7: Jinghong Cave and Tropical Rainforest Adventure

You need to be fully geared up to enter this cave.

Your first exploration follows the regular route, moving forward with a group under the glow of colorful lights.

There’s also a hidden adventure route in this cave, for those who are keen and led by a professional guide. The path gets quite rugged and requires climbing, so you must stick closely to the guide to avoid getting lost. Inside the cave, you might spot small bats—helmet, headlamp, and gloves are essential!

Next, we continue into a tropical rainforest adventure:

Follow the guide and watch rubber tapping on the rubber trees.

You need to be extra careful when entering the tropical rainforest area:

Never reach out to touch any grass or leaves along the way! A careless touch could cause poisoning or swelling. Also, snakes can appear among the small trees. Under the guide’s lead, we saw a green bamboo pit viper resting under a leaf 🐍. Timid as I am, I didn’t dare to take a peek and quickly detoured far away.

The guide also shared a personal story: once a member of his group tried to swing on a hanging vine like Tarzan—it snapped and a bunch of snakes fell down. Everyone fled for their lives.

For those of us who grew up in the city, we must be extremely careful and never let our guard down.

Recommended restaurants in Jinghong:

🔺 Aka Old Village Flavor Restaurant

Day 8: Strolling through Xishuangbanna

I fell in love with Xishuangbanna on my very first visit—

the pleasant temperature, so laid-back;

Slow-paced living is everywhere,

with a rich Southeast Asian vibe.

The Starlight Night Market made me feel like I’d stepped into Thailand all over again.

Recommended restaurants:

🔺 Man Fei Long Roast Chicken

🔺 Mengyang Deadly Skewers

🔺 Gui Xiang · Lao Iced Coffee (they have cats and chinchillas!)

🔺 Dayu Lao Coffee

🔺 Jun Duo Li Wild Mushrooms
