Linggu Temple is located on the southeastern slope of Zijin Mountain in Nanjing, about 1.5 kilometers east of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. Originally named Kaishan Temple, it was built as 'Kaishan Abode' by Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty in the Southern Dynasties to commemorate the famous monk Master Baozhi. Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang, personally renamed it 'Linggu Chan Temple' and designated it as 'the foremost Chan forest under heaven.'

The Linggu Temple as of 2014 is in fact the National Revolutionary Army Memorial Cemetery for fallen soldiers, built on the original temple site in 1928. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was renamed Linggu Park, but it is still commonly called Linggu Temple. Other highlights include the Linggu Pagoda and the Three Uniques Stele. The Xuanzang Memorial Hall houses a seated statue of Master Xuanzang, and the Xuanzang Skull Relic Pagoda in front of it contains a skull relic of the master.

Built in the 14th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, the Wuliang Hall (also known as the Beamless Hall) is made of brick and stone.
