Tips for Independent Travel in Nanjing
1. Getting There: Many cities in China offer direct flights to Nanjing. After landing at Nanjing Lukou Airport, the quickest way into the city (besides airport shuttle buses and taxis) is to take the S1 (Airport Line) for 6 yuan per person. High-speed trains can arrive at either Nanjing South Railway Station or Nanjing Railway Station. Both stations are served by Metro Lines 1 and 3; from Nanjing South, Line 3 also goes directly to the Jiangbei New Area, Dachang, and Liuhe areas.
2. City Transport: Getting around Nanjing is very convenient with numerous metro and bus routes. Use the public transit mode on Gaode Maps (Amap) to check transfer information.
3. Accommodation:
Budget: For affordable and clean options, consider apartment hotels near Nanjing South Railway Station. You can find many for under 200 yuan per night on Ctrip. The metro (Lines 1 and 3) provides easy access to all major sights.
Upscale: The "Airport Hotel" on Longpan Road is a great choice. It's just a 100-meter walk from Wudingmen Station on Metro Line 3. The hotel offers convenient access to Confucius Temple, Laomendong, Zhonghua Gate, Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Nanjing Museum, Jiuhua Mountain, and Jiming Temple. Most importantly, the hotel's "Little Kitchen" restaurant serves authentic Nanjing-style traditional snacks—delicious, reasonably priced, and a real time-saver.
4. Food: Nanjing Da Pai Dang (traditional snacks) and the "Little Kitchen" at the Airport Hotel (Longpan Road) both offer truly authentic local snacks in an elegant setting at reasonable prices—you can sample a wide range of Nanjing's traditional flavors in one meal. There are also many popular food streets like Laomendong, Kexiang, Yangpi Xiang, Hongmiao, and Shiziqiao. Use the public transit mode on Gaode Maps to find routes to these spots.
Tip: Driving into central Nanjing is not recommended. Parking spaces are extremely tight and fees are expensive. Instead, leave your car at your hotel's parking lot and use public transport—it's easier, saves time, and costs less. What you'd pay for a day's parking can easily cover a day's worth of street food!
