Down and out in Jiangnan, I wander with wine, / Slender waists of Chu dancers, light as a palm-sized delight. / Ten years in Yangzhou, a dream now awake, / I've earned only a reputation for fickle love in the pleasure quarters.
Tang Dynasty poet Du Mu's "Dispelling Sorrow" sets the stage for this journey of visiting ancient sites. Originally, I had no plans to travel during the National Day holiday. First, I was worried about the crowds, and second, about the post-pandemic situation (...a bit contradictory, I know). But just before the holiday, I came across Du Mu's poems. This victim of the Niu–Li factional strife, his ten-year promise with a woman from Huzhou, and the story behind his reputation for fickleness... His life story suddenly sparked a desire to explore, so I decided on the spot: go to Yangzhou!
I live in Changde, Hunan. Even from the provincial capital Changsha, there are no direct flights to Yangzhou. And being geography-challenged, I had no idea of the direction, so I turned to my all-knowing WeChat Moments. The best solution: fly directly from Changde to Nanjing in an hour and a half, then take a high-speed train from Nanjing to Yangzhou in about an hour. Ultimately, it expanded into a theme — a trip to Nanjing.
On October 1st, the 10:55 AM flight landed in Nanjing at 12:30 PM. I went straight to the hotel, choosing one by the Qinhuai River, for no other reason than I liked it.
The moment I saw Nanjing, the modern city that was the ancient capital of six dynasties and a metropolis of ten regimes, I was struck by the flavor of old times. 'Gaze upon the scenes of the six dynasties, / Old trees and cold clouds fill the ancient city.'
