May Day Crowd-Avoidance Guide: 5 Lesser-Known Villages in Anhui with Scenic Beauty and Tranquility
Anhui is rich in tourism resources, especially famous for its Huizhou-style ancient villages. The five lesser-known ancient villages recommended below, though not as renowned as Hongcun or Xidi, are precisely because of that, with far less noise and commercial atmosphere.
As the May Day mini-holiday approaches, why not find an ancient village and experience the peace and tranquility of Huizhou countryside.
#Yange Tulou (Earthen Buildings)#
Nestled against the mountains, the Yangchan Tulou offer a refreshing perspective on the Huizhou region. As a unique gem among Huizhou ancient villages, Yangchan Village has preserved a relatively intact rustic charm.
Though not as grand and spectacular as the Fujian Tulou, they possess a distinctive local beauty. If you're lucky, you can also see a magnificent sea of clouds filling the entire village the next morning.

[Ticket Cost] You need to take the scenic area shuttle bus into the village; round-trip ticket is 30 yuan per person
#Ancient Huizhou Village#
Founded at the end of the Sui Dynasty and the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, Zhuwang Village is a typical traditional Huizhou village. Nine wells of different shapes lie in the river, which can be considered a unique scenic feature of Zhuwang Village among the ancient villages in southern Anhui.
During the rainy season, the river flows fast and turbid, but the well water remains undisturbed and crystal clear, creating the peculiar spectacle of 'well water never interfering with river water.'

[Ticket Cost] Admission ticket 50 yuan per person
#Pearl of Xin'an River#
The famous Xin'an River Landscape Gallery starts from Nanyuan Kou in Shexian County and ends at Shendu Town. As the mother river of Huizhou, both banks of the Xin'an River have nurtured many traditional villages, and Zhangtan Village is the highlight of this landscape gallery.
As an elegant ancient village along the river, the Xin'an River draws a graceful curve here, forming a flowing landscape painting.

#Dreamlike Countryside#
Zuyuan Village was founded in the Song Dynasty, nestled deep in the Wulong Mountains on the border of Anhui and Jiangxi. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, terraced fields rise from the foot of the hills to the ridges.
Because it is hidden deep in the mountains, entering Zuyuan Village feels exceptionally secluded—a great place to enjoy pastoral scenery. It is even more spectacular when rapeseed flowers are in full bloom every spring.

#Village in the Clouds#
Muli Hong is located on the ridge of Kuzhu Jian at an altitude of nearly 1,000 meters, making it one of the highest mountain villages in Huangshan City. Viewed from afar, it seems to hang in the air on three sides, like a giant ship sailing through the clouds.
Since there is no road to the village, the only way to reach Muli Hong is to hike for dozens of minutes on foot. Precisely because few tourists come here, it remains a remote paradise to this day.
