Weishui in Jingzhou, a Great Place for Self-Driving Camping on May Day
May Day is approaching. If you're looking for a place with mountains and water to camp, then you might want to check out the Weishui Scenic Area in Jingzhou, Hubei. It combines the charm of island scenery and a paradise away from the world. With a forest coverage rate of over 90%, the scenic area feels like stepping into a green ocean.
There are many attractions here, including the "Weishui Dam," known as the number one dam in Asia, the "Hundred Island Gallery" reminiscent of Qiandao Lake, and the Weishui National Forest Park. You're sure to encounter unexpected surprises.
Staying overnight in the cabins of the Weishui Auto Camp is like stepping into a fairy tale world of The Wizard of Oz. Both adults and children will fall in love with this beautiful scenery in an instant!
In Weishui Town, there is also a lesser-known attraction that closely resembles Qiandao Lake—the Hundred Island Gallery of Weishui Scenic Area. Located at the center of the "Golden Triangle" tourism route of the Three Gorges, Zhangjiajie, and Ancient Jingzhou, it is a sparkling pearl on the golden tourism line of "Three Gorges - Weishui - Zhangjiajie."
A boat tour of the Hundred Island Gallery is a must-do here. The boat seems to weave through a "water maze" and also appears to enter a delicate and elegant ink painting.
Weishui Lake is dotted with numerous islands that alternately expand and contract, making the shoreline winding and zigzag, with crisscrossing harbors, creating a beautiful landscape of mountains and waters. Of course, this water area is also ideal for various water sports.
Look, the 568 islands in the center of the lake are like shining pearls scattered on a huge jade plate. The lake's blue waves stretch far and wide, with islands in the lake and lakes on the islands, complementing each other perfectly.
Visiting the islands offers a panoramic view of green mountains and clear waters. Camping on the islands is also an option, making it truly relaxing. The main attractions here include Nanshan View Island and Ecological Island.
Nanshan View Island consists of three major projects: the hiking trail, the Baiyun Pavilion viewing platform, and the Baiyun Ancient Ferry. From the viewing platform at the top of the mountain, you can enjoy stunning mountain and lake scenery. Ecological Island is an attraction themed around seasonal picking and leisure recreation, with vast flower fields, pine forests blocking the sun, and a refreshing coolness.
I really love this place—no crowds, no noise, only dreamy blue hues and a captivating atmosphere. It's truly an unforgettable journey.
Travel Notes Directory
1. Preface: The Boundless Beauty of Weishui Scenery
2. Part One: Weishui Dam
3. Weishui Dam is the largest man-made earth dam in Asia. It sits in the middle reaches of the Wei River and is the closest attraction we saw when driving to the camp, almost just a step away.
4. Weishui Dam consists of the main dam and the north and south auxiliary dams, with a total length of 8,968 meters, a dam height of 42.7 meters, and a crest elevation of 98.25 meters above sea level. The south auxiliary dam is 2,268 meters long, and the north auxiliary dam is 5,060 meters long. Viewed from above, the dam is S-shaped, elegant in form and particularly spectacular.
5. Many tourists come to walk along the dam and take a stroll! It is as remarkable a great project as the Three Gorges Dam. Below the dam lies Weishui Lake, with lake and mountain scenery as beautiful as a painting.
6. Part Three: Weishui Auto Camp
7. Weishui Auto Camp is the first five-star self-driving sports camp in the country. It is built in the forest at the foot of the Weishui Dam, with a jungle theme that emphasizes interaction between humans and the natural environment.
8. The camp covers a large area and offers many room types to choose from: 15 fairy-tale themed tree houses, 5 jungle cabins, 5 star-gazing tents, and 4 waterfront luxury tents—all top picks for photo opportunities.
9. I highly recommend the tree house we stayed in; it really felt like stepping into The Wizard of Oz. The tree house has two floors, spacious with complete facilities, and we were very satisfied overall.
10. I must say, the tree house area is really photogenic, especially when the sun rises and soft light pours down. It is advisable to wear a plain colored dress to easily achieve a fresh, natural style.
11. Although only two of us stayed, the second floor of the cabin had two large beds, which would be plenty of space even for a family with children. Downstairs, there is a separate living room with a stylish interior decoration, giving an excellent experience!
12. Weishui Auto Camp: Admission 30 yuan, tent overnight fee 50 yuan (site fee). Cabins, tent rooms, RVs, etc. vary in price from 150 to 1,500 yuan depending on room type (prices increase during holidays). Weishui Scenic Area: Weishui Dam is free. The boat dock for Hundred Island Gallery is located diagonally opposite the auto camp on the embankment not far away; cars can be parked on the embankment. Boat tour: 100 yuan/person, speedboat: 120 yuan/person. The entire tour takes about 2 hours, with two landings for hiking and island sightseeing.
