Play Like This in Songzi: Visit the Thousand-Island Lake, Stay at the RV Campground
Songzi is located in the southwestern part of Hubei Province, west of Jingzhou City. It boasts beautiful natural scenery, with tourist attractions such as the Weishui Scenic Area, Lingjiu Temple, General Yan's Cave, and Xinshen Cave. In recent years, camping has become very popular here, especially the Weishui RV Campground at the foot of Weishui Dam, which is the first five-star self-driving sports campground in China.
This is my first time here, and actually I came for this RV campground. During the day, I took a boat to the "Thousand-Island Lake" Weishui Scenic Area, and at night I stayed at the campground. Or you could spend the entire day at the campground, where there are activities to enjoy and specialty foods to taste. Even staying for a few days wouldn't be boring.
When you see this picture, what place comes to mind first? Do you also think of Hangzhou's Thousand Island Lake like me?
This is the Weishui Scenic Area (Weishui Reservoir), located in Songzi City, Hubei Province. The lake water is vast and clear, merging with the sky. There are many islands of various sizes in the lake, like a thousand-island lake, earning it the reputation of "Thousand Island Lake of the Southern Chu Wonderland."
The Weishui Scenic Area is an artificial reservoir, construction of which began in 1958 and was completed in 1970. The reservoir is about 15 kilometers long from east to west and 6 kilometers wide from north to south, with a water surface area of nearly 370,000 square kilometers, fully six times the size of Hangzhou's West Lake. After completion, the reservoir has provided benefits such as flood control, power generation, irrigation, and aquaculture. It is an important drinking water source for the Yangtze River basin, and now it attracts many tourists who come for its beautiful and spectacular scenery.
Naturally, building a reservoir requires constructing a dam. The dam is nearly 10 kilometers long and is known as "the largest artificial earth dam in Asia." Weishui Dam has also become a beautiful scenic spot here. You can walk or run along the dam top, feel the breeze blowing from the lake, and enjoy the picturesque scenery of the lake and mountains, which is refreshing and relaxing.
The Weishui Scenic Area is a national 4A-level tourist attraction, a provincial-level scenic spot, and a national forest park. It is not far from the surrounding Yangtze River Three Gorges and Zhangjiajie, making it a bright pearl on this golden tourist route. It mainly includes the Weishui Reservoir, Weishui Dam, Weishui National Forest Park, Weishui Auto Campground, White Bird Gallery, Xinshen Cave, and other attractions, with very rich tourism resources.
The vast, misty, and water-sky-integrated Weishui Reservoir truly amazed me. There are about 500 islands dotted in the lake—islands within the lake, lakes within the islands, mountains and water complementing each other, with layered peaks. How could one not linger and forget to return amidst such beautiful scenery?
Lake, dam, campground, and islands are the characteristics of the Weishui Scenic Area, so the main activity here is taking a cruise to visit the islands. Although the weather wasn't great on the day I went, the lake water was still exceptionally blue. Our group took a boat to a small island, and the first impression was like arriving at a seaside island. The extended peninsula was extremely beautiful.
The island mainly focuses on leisure and sightseeing. There is an agricultural park with fruits and fragrant melons all year round; amusement facilities that are very friendly to children, so they won't get bored; and photo spots that girls should not miss for beautiful shots.
For us, the campground on the island was the biggest highlight. Having experienced jungle camping, mountain camping, and roadside camping... this was my first time experiencing island bay camping. A tent, a tree, a stretch of "sea," a few good friends... this is the enjoyment that a vacation should have.
From a drone's perspective, the island bay campground is a sight where the green lake water and orange-red sand beach complement each other, like a palette of colors, giving me the illusion of being on a seaside island vacation.
This is my first time visiting Songzi City in Hubei Province. Although I don't know much about the local tourist attractions, this auto campground is quite famous, namely the Weishui Auto Campground. It is the first five-star self-driving sports campground in China and has won the "Deer Eagle Award," the Oscar of the camping industry.
Weishui Auto Campground is hidden in the jungle at the foot of the largest artificial earth dam in Asia and a national 4A-level tourist attraction, Weishui Dam. It lies on the golden tourist route of Yangtze Three Gorges - Weishui Scenic Area - Zhangjiajie, and is not far from National Highway 318. Whether you are passing by on a road trip or it is your travel destination, this is an ideal place to rest.
The campground covers an area of over 400 mu (about 66 acres) and is divided into functional areas such as the main venue area, main campground, accommodation area, and activity and entertainment area. It offers different types of rooms, including garden RVs, jungle treehouses, starry sky tents, camphor wood cabins, luxury wild tents, waterside villas, and forest mansions. Whether for family outings or company team building, it tries its best to meet everyone's needs.
The campground has 5 garden RVs. For those who have never experienced an RV, this is very popular. For someone like me who has experienced RVs before, I prefer the treehouses hidden in the jungle, as if living in a fairy tale world.
The RV consists of a living room, a bedroom, a bathroom, and a bar counter. The rooms and living room are very spacious, much larger than I imagined. At night, it's a place to rest; during the day, you can sit with a few friends, drink tea, and chat, which is very pleasant.
By the water, there are 4 waterside luxury wild tents. Each tent creates a romantic space. In the afterglow of the setting sun, you can lean on the railing and gaze into the distance, and under the starry sky, you can look up at the stars. Camping here feels like a dialogue between yourself and nature, without the noise of the city or the distractions of nightlife. This feeling is very enjoyable.
This is the treehouse I stayed in. Hidden among the tall, dense forest, it has a touch of mystery. Surrounded by lush trees, it gives the illusion of being in a fairy tale world. I love this feeling; it allows both body and mind to relax completely.
If you are a family with children, you must stay in the jungle cabins. The cabin has two floors, and from the second floor, you can slide down directly via a spiral slide. Even adults can do it, finding the happiness they missed in childhood.
In addition, there are also activities here such as the Jungle Adventure Park, rock climbing, overcoming obstacles, Jungle Battle Park, wading pool, children's playground, mountain bikes, VR experience, real-life CS, outdoor movies, bonfires, and more.
