Tokyo Gourmet Tour After the Pandemic
I never write travelogues. This is my first time, only because I got a five-year visa. I'm recording the good food and drink places this time to serve as a backup for my next food trip.
Because of the pandemic, most online information is from 2019, at latest 2020. This time I took many detours, turning my slender legs into white radish legs (because they were swollen).
Every 10 steps a matcha shop—it's a matcha paradise. Even if my legs break, a matcha lover must come.
Asakusa Kagetsudo
Address: 2-7-13 Asakusa, Taito-ku
Reason to try: Matcha ice cream pineapple bun. Huge, crispy crust, matcha filling ice cold to the core.
Address: Suzukien × Nanaya, 3-4-3 Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo
Reason to try: Selection of 7-level matcha ice cream, from mild to intense. Ice cream available for dine-in, 7-level matcha chocolate for takeout. Also matcha mochi.
Address: 2-7-21 Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo
Reason to try: Good wine needs no bush—truly at the end of a narrow alley. They only make matcha crepes, with 4-5 matcha options.
Address: B2F, Main Building, Odakyu Department Store Shinjuku, 1-1-3 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
To try next time: A long-established shop since 1895; the quality of sukiyaki should be good. Unfortunately, limited appetite and half-crippled legs, so I had to give up this time.
Isomaru Suisan (Roppongi)
Address: 5-2-6 Roppongi, Minato-ku
Reason to try: Open until 29 o'clock—counted on fingers, probably until 5 AM. When hungry while other restaurants are closed, you can find this place. Later found they have several chain stores. Various grilled items, beer, and Chinese ordering via mobile phone. Isn't that great?
Charcoal Grilled Meat (Roppongi 5-chome)
Address: B1, Nakano Building, 5-8-3 Roppongi, Minato-ku
Reason to try: Generous portions, delicious beef tongue. Cash only. This was our last stop; we searched every pocket, ordered with a calculator.
Cinnabon Seattle's Best Coffee Roppongi
Address: 6-5-18 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0032
To try next time: Said to be a top cinnamon bun, but didn't have time to pass by, so hope for a chance encounter next time.
bricolage bread & co. (Roppongi Hills, Roppongi Keyakizaka-dori)
Address: 1F, Keyakizaka Terrace, 6-15-1 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0032
To try next time: Lots and lots of bread; carb lovers shouldn't miss. Heard the brunch is good, but this time stayed a bit far, couldn't make it for brunch. So let the regret be a reason for next time!
Saitamaya (No. 2)
Address: 1-2-10 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo (in "Omoide Yokocho" alley of small eateries)
Reason to try: The only oden shop nearby; the skewers are also delicious. The server turned out to be from Shanghai—so easy to chat! Quickly ordered all the good stuff in dialect, haha.
Oiwake Dango Honpo (Shinjuku Main Store)
Address: 3-1-22 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku
Reason to try: Traditional Japanese dessert shop with daifuku, shaved ice, and jelly. So popular; went early, waited in long line under scorching sun. By sunset, they were about to close. Open until 6 PM; we sat down around 5 PM, most items sold out, very few options left. Next time go earlier and order everything.
Tonkatsu Wako (Miored Shinjuku)
Address: 12F, Main Building, Odakyu Department Store, 1-1-3 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
To try next time: Specializes in fried pork cutlet. Finally found it, but a long line instantly reminded me I am a descendant of the dragon. So reluctantly passed by.
Banshakuya Yakitori Izakaya
Address: Line side of Omoide Yokocho, 1-2-2 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
To try next time: Come and go in a hurry, didn't catch an izakaya encounter. To be continued...
Nagasaka Sarashina Nunoya Tahee
Address: 4th floor, outside security check, Terminal 1, Narita International Airport
Reason to try: A bit of sentiment; my previous Japan trip also ended at this shop. Tempura with soba noodles, a simple combination that has remained compatible over the years.
Downside: The sauce was a bit salty. The pictures and text on the same line do not necessarily refer to the same set meal; we naturally ordered wrong. Next time better ask for an English menu.
FaSoLa Cafe coffee & beer (Satellite 5, Terminal 1)
Address: 3F South Wing, Terminal 1, Narita International Airport, Satellite 5 (after security check area)
Reason to try: Creamy ice cream with rich milk flavor.
