Vienna's Musical Code
This is a walking tour centered on music, traversing Vienna's main historic districts. The old town was once a gathering place for musicians and people from literary and artistic circles. Strolling through it, you can not only feel the shock of classical music, but also appreciate buildings of various styles from different periods (frozen music), still maintaining their original appearance. Every square, garden, and café here was once a place where masters sought creative inspiration and sparked intellectual brilliance. Although time has passed and years have slipped away, we can still imagine the elegance of hundreds of years ago and feel the bits and pieces of the past through some traces...
Starting point: St. Stephen's Cathedral
End point: City Park
St. Stephen's Cathedral is a representative of Gothic style and the center of Vienna.
Walk northwest along Goldschmiedgasse, pass St. Peter's Church, turn left onto Kohlmarkt, and arrive at Michaelerplatz, which is the Hofburg Palace, the winter residence of the Habsburg dynasty. You can enter Heldenplatz to visit the palace.
Then exit, cross Ballhausplatz, walk along the outside of Volksgarten, go around Josef Meinrad Platz, and reach Universitätsring. On the east side of the road is the Burgtheater.
Opposite is the City Hall (Rathaus), with a garden in front.
After passing the City Hall garden, walk to Volksgarten. The first thing you see is the statue of Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) in the garden.
After visiting the garden, exit and walk southeast to Maria Theresien Platz. The square houses the Natural History Museum and the Art History Museum.
After visiting the museums, continue along Burgring. At the end of the road is the Burggarten, whose most famous feature is the marble statue of Mozart.
Exit the garden and enter Opernring. Turn left onto Operngasse to see the Neo-Renaissance style State Opera House.
Climb the terrace of Albertinaplatz to overlook the opera house from above.
From the other side of the opera house, walk south on Kärntner Straße to reach Karlsplatz. In front of the pond, you can see the reflection of the Karlskirche (St. Charles's Church).
In the park, there is also a statue of Brahms.
Across the street, you can see the Musikverein (Golden Hall). Follow the direction you see to get there.
Finally, head to the City Park. Along the way, you must pass Beethovenplatz and see the towering statue of Beethoven.
Opposite is the Konzerthaus.
Enter the park, close to the stream, cross a bridge, and see Bruckner.
Further on, after passing the pond, there is Schubert.
After touring the park, return to the south side. The finale is the statue of John Strauss playing the violin.
Look at his focused expression—what story is he telling to people?
So let's dance a waltz here to end this walking tour.
