"All the cultural currents of Europe converge here... this eclectic art, this art of a music-filled, gentle country, can be seen in the various buildings of the city."

Zweig described Vienna this way in "The World of Yesterday". He was born during the Habsburg dynasty, witnessed the powerful empire's demise, and the arrival of a war that swept the world. Vienna's buildings bear similar witness; having endured dynastic rises and falls and the shadows of war, they stand firm, recounting past glory.

Vienna, famed for its musical arts, is also a true "architectural museum", housing buildings from various periods and styles, from magnificent Baroque palaces to spectacular Gothic cathedrals. Walking through Vienna is like stepping into a journey through time.

In 1743, the Austrian empress built this magnificent Baroque palace, whose grandeur and luxury rival the Palace of Versailles in France. Schönbrunn Palace accompanied the rise and fall of multiple dynasties. Its architecture and decoration are predominantly Baroque, with some rooms featuring Rococo style. The palace boasts an astonishing number of rooms—1,441—each uniquely designed.

The breathtakingly splendid curved palace is the Hofburg Palace. Its history dates back to the 13th century, when it was a castle for defense against enemies, later serving as the palace for several dynasties. After multiple renovations and expansions, it incorporates a rich mix of classic European architectural styles, a miniature version of the "architectural museum". From Renaissance and Gothic to lavish Baroque and Rococo, and then to Neoclassical styles, they are all on display at the Hofburg, earning it the reputation of "a city within a city".

The Neo-Renaissance architecture, popular in the 19th century, as its name suggests, drew inspiration from 15th-century Italian Renaissance architecture, while also influenced by Baroque and Gothic styles. With its square form, clean lines, and emphasis on symmetry, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna is a typical Neo-Renaissance building. Its exterior is magnificent, its interior ornate and intricate; the building itself is worth seeing, not to mention the vast collection of artistic treasures within, including paintings by masters such as Raphael, Vermeer, Rubens, Rembrandt, Dürer, and Titian.

Ancient Rome also left its mark on Austria. The town of Carnuntum near Vienna was once a Roman military garrison, where ruins from the Roman period are well-preserved, including city buildings, baths, and a vast open-air amphitheater.

Not far from Carnuntum is the birthplace of the renowned composer Joseph Haydn. He was born in this simple farmhouse and showed extraordinary musical talent from an early age.

Vienna is also not lacking in stunning modern architecture. Hundertwasserhaus is one such example. The building takes its name from its designer, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist and architect. He planned and funded the construction of the house together with a friend. Built in the early 1980s for low-income residents, this building has become one of Vienna's icons, attracting a steady stream of tourists. With its bright, vivid colors and wave-like undulating lines, it evokes a childlike playfulness with building blocks. The entire building is filled with greenery, adhering to the designer's principle of achieving harmony between humans and nature.

Time has not taken away the city's splendor and romance. Vienna remains as enchanting as Zweig described.
