Exploring Passport DC in May in Washington
Washington, D.C. is a multicultural, harmonious, vibrant, and shining city, with embassies from over 170 countries. Every May, Washington holds a cultural event called 'Passport DC' to enhance cultural exchanges and increase awareness of different regional cultures. Thousands of people enjoy embassy open houses, street festivals, performances, exhibitions, workshops, and other cultural activities.
On May 6, the Embassy of China in the United States also participated in Washington D.C.'s 'Around the World Embassy Tour' event, hosting an open house with the theme 'There Is a Kind of Life Called Yunnan' and a promotional event for Yunnan Province. The event introduced Yunnan's development potential and unique charm to American people from all walks of life, presenting a colorful audio-visual feast of Yunnan. The Chinese Embassy's open house welcomed about 15,000 visitors throughout the day.
The Chinese Embassy's open house featured a variety of visiting and experiential activities. Visitors strolled through the embassy premises, appreciating the ingenious architecture and the collection of artworks including paintings of the Five Great Mountains and the Great Wall, traditional calligraphy, and porcelain. They savored Yunnan specialty tea and coffee, tried the four treasures of the study (brush, ink, paper, inkstone), stopped to watch and discuss the photo exhibition 'The Extraordinary Decade of China in the New Era', the exhibition on China's scientific and technological achievements, and historical photos of China-U.S. exchanges. They also dressed in Hanfu and Yunnan ethnic costumes for green screen photography, took photos with panda mascots, listened to performances by Chinese folk music and jazz bands, watched dragon and lion dances and waist drum performances, and tasted special snacks such as bean paste pastries, pea flour cakes, and spring rolls. On the embassy stage, artists from Yunnan Huadeng Theater and the Honghe Prefecture Ethnic Culture Work Troupe presented authentic performances. Two intangible cultural heritage inheritors from Yunnan demonstrated Dongba script writing and Dai paper-cutting techniques, attracting many visitors to participate and interact. The continuous flow of people inside and outside the embassy, along with smiles and exclamations everywhere, made this May weekend in Washington even more vibrant with the spirit of spring.
Before leaving, people took out their 'passport booklets' to get stamped with the Chinese Embassy's panda stamp. Many visitors exclaimed that the Chinese Embassy can be considered a museum of Chinese history, a pavilion of Chinese cultural experiences, and an exhibition hall of Chinese culture and contemporary China, saying that today's embassy tour was very rewarding and well worth the visit.
In addition to the embassy open houses, the 'European Union Open House' on May 13 and the 'Fiesta Asia Street Fair' on May 20 are also highly anticipated. They will feature wonderful ethnic performances, outdoor handicraft exhibitions, live shows, and delicious food, allowing you to deeply experience the cultures of various regions.
The 'Passport DC' cultural festival will continue until May 31. Everyone is welcome to go and experience it!
