Whether it's scenery or culture, Yunnan offers many choices. Among the numerous routes, the most classic is still the Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Lugu Lake route. It's suitable for all seasons and all types of travelers. Keep this detailed guide and set off for Yunnan now! This year, I went to Yunnan with the help of top guide Xiao Wang, who arranged our itinerary. For the entire 6-day trip, star-rated hotels, scenic spot tickets, local transportation, local guides, meals, and other travel chores were all handled by Xiao Wang. We had a great time, and the key is that it wasn't expensive—just over 1000 yuan. It was incredibly worth it! If you're interested, feel free to message me for more details.

1. Why do most first-time visitors choose Kunming + Dali + Lijiang?

1. Convenient transportation: Both the long-distance flights from other cities and the connections between these three places are very convenient. Kunming is the transportation hub of all Yunnan, with many flights and cheap tickets. The newly opened high-speed train to Dali and the train between Dali and Lijiang, which takes just over 2 hours, make travel easy.

2. Concentrated classic attractions: Yunnan is rich in tourism resources, and even after two or three visits, you can't experience everything. But the most classic spots are in Dali and Lijiang, and the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang route allows you to see more in a limited time.

3. Suitable for all groups: These three places have relatively well-developed scenic areas, with classic photo spots and deeper, less crowded options. Accommodation, food, and transportation are well guaranteed. It's suitable for first-timers, family trips with parents, parent-child trips, couples, and groups of friends.

2. Transportation between the three places

Dali-Lijiang:

- Train: There are two daily trains from Dali to Lijiang, at 17:15 and 19:05. From Lijiang to Dali, there are also two trains, at 7:00 and 16:00. The journey takes just over 2 hours, with hard seat tickets costing 34 yuan.

- Bus: From 7:10 to 19:00, buses depart frequently from Dali Bus Station and North Bus Station, about every half hour. Tickets cost 50-80 yuan.

Kunming-Lijiang:

- Train: Most trains depart after 8 pm, arriving in the morning, taking 8-9 hours. Suitable for an overnight sleeper.

- Bus: From Kunming West Coach Station or Long-distance Bus Station, tickets cost 140-200 yuan and the journey takes about 10 hours.

3. Must-Visit Spots on the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang Route

Kunming – Not Just a Transit Hub:

- Cuihu Park – Experience livable Kunming: The central park of Kunming, surrounded by cultural atmosphere and many former residences of celebrities. In summer, the lake is full of lotus flowers; in winter, red-billed gulls from Siberia arrive. Regardless of the season, many elderly people exercise here in the morning. Here, you can truly feel how livable Kunming is. Suggested visit time: 1 hour. Free admission.

- Yunnan Military Academy – Century-old military school, cradle of generals: A famous modern Chinese military academy that trained military leaders like Zhu De and Ye Jianying. Located west of Cuihu Park, you can visit after the park. The bright yellow Republican-era building is striking. The interior can be visited, with displays still maintaining the original look. Opening hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 09:00-17:00. Free admission.

- Yunnan University – Century-old prestigious university with historical architecture and landscapes. Iconic buildings include Huize Hall and Yingqiu Hall designed by Lin Huiyin, and the Yunnan University spirit of 'Huize Baijia, Zhigong Tianxia'. In autumn, there's the famous Ginkgo Avenue, and you might encounter cute little squirrels. Free admission, open all day, suggested visit time: 1-3 hours.

- Stone Forest – Nature's masterpiece: When in Kunming, no matter the theme of your trip, it's recommended to include the classic Stone Forest, a wonder of nature with karst landscape. It's divided into two areas: Big Stone Forest and Small Stone Forest. Be sure to listen to the guide's explanation, otherwise you'll just be glancing at rocks without knowing the stories behind them. Opening hours: 08:00-18:00. Admission: 175 yuan, electric cart 25 yuan.

- Dianchi Lake – Encounter red-billed gulls: Dianchi is Yunnan's largest freshwater lake, about half an hour from the city. Compared to Cuihu Park, it's more grand, known as the 'Pearl of the Plateau'. In winter, the circling red-billed gulls are a classic sight. Flocks of seagulls flying over the sparkling lake are a must-see for photographers. Free admission, suggested visit time: 1-3 hours.

- Dounan Flower Market – Flowers at cabbage prices: Asia's largest flower market, with huge variety and flowers sold by weight at cheap prices. Whether you want to experience flower traders' transactions or buy a bouquet for yourself, don't miss it. Wholesale trading starts at 20:45, with the busiest time from 21:00 to midnight. During the day, fewer flowers are sold and they may not be as fresh. Visit in the evening.

- Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Archway – Kunming's iconic commercial street: Kunming's landmark architecture and characteristic commercial street. Opposite the archway is Kunming Pedestrian Street, worth a visit at night.

Dali – Not Just Romance:

- Dali Old Town – Ancient Nanzhao capital at the foot of Cangshan Mountain: Besides the classic Wuhua Tower, there are no absolute landmarks, but it's very worth wandering. Stroll through the old town, visiting specialty shops, bars, and snack shops. Renmin Road is the main street and the busiest. Free admission. Transportation: Take bus No. 8 from Dali Railway Station. Suggested play time: 2 hours to half a day.

- Erhai Lake – Scenery of wind, flowers, snow, and moon: It's no exaggeration to say Erhai is the most anticipated attraction in Dali. Around the lake, there are various great photo spots: artistic roads, sea of flowers, transparent glass balls, white tables in front of Erhai. These are iconic images of Erhai. A photoshoot around the lake plus a sea-view room makes for a perfect experience. Photo spots around Erhai: 1. Xizhou Ancient Town 2. Haishe Park 3. White Bus 4. Abandoned fishing boat (upside down) 5. Haixi Water Station 6. Flower Sea 7. Internet-famous white table and glass ball 8. Seaside rocks 9. Lover's Cliff 10. Xiaoputuo.

- Dali Winter Cherry Blossoms – Paradise for photographers: While the north is still icy, Dali welcomes winter cherry blossoms, attracting countless photographers. Winter cherry is a Yunnan-specific variety. The most famous spot is in Wuliang Mountain Cherry Blossom Valley, blooming from late November to mid-December. During the festival, buses run from Xiaguan, Dali to Cherry Blossom Valley. Another spot is Dali University, which is more accessible, right next to the old town. During cherry blossom season, the roadsides and hills on campus are covered in blossoms.

Lijiang – Not Just Romance:

- Lijiang Old Town – Wooden buildings, blue tiles, ancient streets, stone alleys, small bridges, flowing water. Lijiang Old Town consists of Dayan Ancient Town and Shuhe Ancient Town. Traditional Lijiang Old Town refers to Dayan. Famous attractions include Sifang Street, Big Waterwheel, Lion Hill, Wangu Tower, and Mufu. If you like excitement, there's a bar street at night. But exploring sights is not the essence of Lijiang Old Town—the real charm is wandering aimlessly, then sitting in a café to have coffee and listen to music.

- Lashi Lake – Ancient Tea Horse Road: Lashi Lake is a famous Tea Horse Road, with beautiful wetland scenery and migratory birds. Main activities: horse riding and boating. A day trip is possible from Lijiang, but transportation is not convenient and has been criticized for scams. It's recommended to join a tour to handle transport and avoid pitfalls.

- Jade Dragon Snow Mountain – Naxi sacred mountain: A must-visit in Lijiang. Sights along the way include Glacier Park, Yunshanping, Blue Moon Valley, Maoniuping, and Ganhaizi. The most classic route goes through Ganhaizi, Blue Moon Valley, then take the large cable car to Glacier Park. Best season: November to March when there's most snow. Admission: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area: 100 yuan, through ticket for all attractions: 205, Glacier Park cable car: 120 yuan, Yunshanping small cable car: 55 yuan, Maoniuping medium cable car: 60 yuan.

- Lijiang Lishuijinsha Show – A must-see performance: Lishuijinsha is a dance-poetry-painting show showcasing Lijiang's ethnic culture in four parts: 'Prologue', 'Water', 'Mountain', and 'Love'. It features the Snow Mountain Goddess, Dai tenderness, and Mosuo love stories, highlighting the cultures of various Yunnan ethnic minorities. You can also see the world's only surviving pictographic script – Dongba script. 'See mountains by day, watch shows by night' is a must in Lijiang.

- Lugu Lake – Magical eastern daughter kingdom: Home to the mysterious Mosuo people who practice walking marriage, and clear azure lake water. With the opening of highways, flights, and the influence of the TV show 'Dear Inn', this once secluded paradise is gaining more visitors. Must-do experiences: lake cruise, picking water flowers in a unique pig trough boat, walking on the Marriage Bridge over the grass sea, watching sunset at Goddess Bay, viewing the lake from the observation deck, and eating authentic local dishes at Mosuo homes. Admission: 100 yuan. Bus: Daily morning buses from Lijiang Bus Station to Lugu Lake Daluoshui, journey about 4.5-5 hours, price around 70 yuan.

4. Kunming-Dali-Lijiang Food Recommendations

1. Kunming's most famous food is crossing-the-bridge rice noodles. Besides the famous Qiaoxiangyuan, locals often go to Xiaoqiao Douhua Rice Noodles, Wenshan He Xian Ju, and Dongchun Small Pot Rice Noodles.

2. In Dali Old Town, don't miss Zaishuitou Cold Chicken Rice Noodles and Yangji Grilled Milk Fan. If your trip includes Xizhou, try the local Xizhou Baba (both sweet and savory). Ersi (rice cake strips) are soft and chewy, no worse than rice noodles. For local snacks, these are recommended. For Bai cuisine meals, try Gujing Private Kitchen, a local favorite.

3. Lijiang: The most representative Lijiang food is preserved pork ribs (lapaigu). Good ones aren't in the old town. Recommended local restaurants: Ama Preserved Ribs (near Old Town South Gate) and Apo Preserved Ribs (near Old Town North Gate slope). Clay pot chicken hotpot is a specialty of Lashi Lake. Freshwater salmon in Lijiang is actually a trout nourished by snow water; it's worth trying. Recommended restaurant: Tuojiang Fish House. For snacks, the 88 Snack Shop in the old town is very popular, often full. Their chicken bean jelly, small pot rice noodles, sour plum soup, and fried rice are signature dishes.

5. Why Join a Tour?

1. Although all these places are on the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang route, distances between attractions are large. Free travel wastes time waiting for transportation connections. A tour eliminates this worry, solving all transport issues with comfortable buses that reduce fatigue.

2. Yunnan hotels generally offer good experiences but aren't cheap. Options include seaside rooms by Erhai, hot spring hotels in Kunming, and Naxi-style inns in Lijiang Old Town. Joining a tour lets you experience a variety of quality accommodations for the lowest cost.

3. Free travel allows flexible schedules but has difficulties with transfers, limiting how much you can see. Our itinerary covers the most classic spots in Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Lugu Lake, combining classics with lesser-known gems to maximize your time. Perfect for first-timers, those with poor self-travel skills, or those without time for planning. This Yunnan trip was very enjoyable. Thank you sincerely to Xiao Wang for her warm service and thoughtful arrangements. If you want a worry-free and cost-effective trip, feel free to message me!
