Wind, Flower, Snow, and Moon beside Erhai Lake and under Cangshan Mountain – First Day in Dali
I’ve longed for Dali countless times, to see Erhai’s moonlight reflecting on Cangshan’s snow, and to stroll by Erhai Lake with her.
“Maybe you’re not quite satisfied with life
You haven’t smiled in a long time and don’t know why
Since you’re unhappy and don’t like it here
Why not head west all the way to Dali.”
In 2020, bored with life and unlucky in love, I boarded a flight to Dali.
The first time I arrived in Dali, I couldn’t wait to get up early. Stepping onto the balcony, I saw the beautiful Erhai Lake and Cangshan Mountain behind it.
At the Yun Gui Gu Li courtyard inn, breakfast is served from 7 to 10 a.m. If you wake up late, don’t worry – the inn also prepares morning snacks for late risers. From the dining room, you can see Cangshan. The owner said sometimes little squirrels come down to enjoy breakfast with you 🐝. After breakfast, I went back to my room and sat in the courtyard (each room has its own courtyard – it feels like a world in a single flower). Basking in the sun, looking at distant Erhai Lake, I felt this is how life should be.
For lunch, I dined at Yuren Jiyi Restaurant inside Dali Ancient Town, tasting the Bai ethnic cuisine (kudos to the chef). The restaurant’s ambiance matched the old-town style perfectly.
After tea and a satisfying meal, I strolled through Dali Ancient Town.
The unique Bai-style architecture displays a different kind of scenery to the world.
The Ximatan Cableway on Cangshan Mountain starts at the Tianlong Babu Film City, passes by the Seven Dragon Fairies Pool, and reaches Yuju Peak. It links the film city with the Seven Dragon Fairies Pool scenic area in the heart of Cangshan and the Ximatan cableway at the summit, where snow blankets the slopes in winter and spring, and clouds and mist linger in summer and autumn. The ride lets you experience the mystery and allure of Cangshan’s glacial relics, rhododendron forests, and fir forests at the very top of the mountain.
Sitting in an ancient town tavern, listening to one melancholy folk song after another, I struck up a cheerful conversation with someone at the next table who, like me, was drinking alone.
Today I record the first day of my Dali trip. To be continued! Goodnight.
