I've always wanted to visit Yunnan, but didn't know where to start. Are Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Lugu Lake, and Xishuangbanna fun? Are the attractions far apart? How should I plan the trip? I hope friends who have been there can share details about attractions, costs, routes, precautions, accommodation, and food—the more detailed, the better.

I just returned from a six-day trip to Yunnan with friends at the end of last month. We visited Dali, Lijiang, Erhai Lake, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Blue Moon Valley, and other spots! While researching travel tips online, I saw many netizens recommending a local Kunming guide named A Ping. They said he was a great guide, so I booked our itinerary with him.

Our travel route in Yunnan: Kunming-Dali-Lijiang 6-Day 5-Night Premium Tour

Day 1: Arrive in Kunming – Airport/Train Station Pickup – Check into Hotel – Free Time

Pickup at Kunming airport. Check into hotel. If time permits, recommend visiting the "Xiangyun" Food City in downtown Kunming to taste Yunnan specialties: affordable stinky tofu, fragrant small pot rice noodles, fresh fruit juices, and hundreds of other Yunnan snacks. Day 2: Kunming – Stone Forest – Head to Chuxiong – Check into Hotel

After breakfast, depart from hotel around 7:30 AM by bus to the Stone Forest. Speaking of the Stone Forest, we recall a limerick by Guo Moruo: "From afar the stones are big, up close they are huge. Indeed the stones are big, the stones are indeed huge." Reciting this brings the Stone Forest to mind. Explore the karst wonderland—[Stone Forest]—listen to the stories each stone tells, visit the Ashima petrified stone, Sword Peak Pond, Wangfeng Pavilion, Two Birds Feeding, Stone Forest Lake, and other attractions. After lunch, take the bus back to Kunming. Each guest is treated to a VIP tea break with a cup of hot authentic Pu'er tea, experiencing Yunnan's thousand-year tea culture. Then proceed to Chuxiong. After breakfast, head to Dali (about 2.5 hours by car). Visit the renowned [Dali Ancient Town], also known as Yeyu City, Forbidden City, or Zhonghe Town. The characters "大理" above the gate are collected from Guo Moruo's calligraphy. The streets follow a typical checkerboard layout. The scene of "three homes sharing a well, one household with several potted flowers" still exists.

Then take a [Specialty Cruise on Erhai Lake] to enjoy the lake views. After lunch, take a [Jeep] to a popular TikTok photo spot—freely wander, enjoy the lake view and trendy props like [Instagram Glass Ball and White Chair], tailored for your Erhai dream! Then visit the "City of Culture"—[Dali Ancient Town]. It faces the sparkling Erhai Lake to the east and leans against the evergreen Cangshan Mountain to the west, forming a layout of "water surrounding the mountain, mountain embracing the town." The east-west Huguo Road is known as "Foreigner Street." Enjoy local snacks for dinner, then check into hotel.

Day 4: Lijiang – Folk Culture Experience Zone – Lashihai or Dongba Valley – Dance Performance – Check into Hotel

After breakfast, visit the [Folk Cultural Experience Zone]. Then head to Lijiang to visit the 4A-rated [Lashihai Scenic Area] or [Dongba Valley], experiencing the ancient Tea Horse Road. Reach the source of Lashihai. This is a migratory bird base, the origin of Lijiang culture, and an important town on the Tea Horse Road. The locals are simple Naxi people. You can experience genuine Naxi culture, learn about horse caravan history, seek spiritual impact, and enjoy cultural imagery of boats on water, people on boats, and singing. It fully displays Lijiang's unique and extensive ethnic culture.

Then stroll through the World Heritage city of Lijiang, visit [Lijiang Ancient Town and Sifang Street] (guests can explore freely and buy local snacks at their own expense). You'll appreciate the unique ancient town scenery of "every home has flowing water, every household has willows rivaling Jiangnan." Day 5: Lijiang – Shuhe Ancient Town – Jade Dragon Snow Mountain – Kunming

After breakfast, visit [Shuhe Ancient Town or Baisha Ancient Town]. Shuhe, called "Shaowu" in Naxi language, is named after the pile-like mountain behind the village. It was one of the earliest Naxi settlements in the Lijiang basin and a well-preserved important town on the Tea Horse Road. After lunch, head to [Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Scenic Area], known as the "Switzerland of the East." It is the closest snow mountain range to the equator and incarnations of the three gods. Take the [Glacier Cableway] to explore the mountain. The cableway is 2,914 meters long with a vertical drop of 1,150 meters, one of China's highest tourist cableways.

Starting from the meadow at 3,000 meters, pass through tall pine and fir forests, view the sacred Naxi mountain, and enjoy the magnificent Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Its main peak, Fanzi Peak, is a sacred mountain for the Naxi people and all ethnic groups in Lijiang, at an altitude of 4,506 meters. Visit [Blue Moon Valley], which is as serene as a gentle woman, silent and beautiful in hidden places. The water from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain flows here, creating enchanting colors due to surface minerals. After dinner, take a sleeper train or bus back to Kunming.

Day 6: Kunming – Transfer to Airport According to Flight Time – Return to Warm Home

Sleep in, then transfer to the airport according to the schedule. Tourists can end their pleasant Yunnan trip at Kunming airport or train station and return to their warm homes!

Yunnan is one of the best-protected ethnic minority regions, with beautiful scenery, pleasant climate, and spring-like weather year-round. Key Attractions in Yunnan

Lijiang Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Scenic Area is a nationally approved 5A-level scenic spot. Located in Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, it is the southernmost major snow mountain in the Northern Hemisphere. In Naxi language, it is called "Oulu," meaning silver mountain. Its snow-capped peaks stretch continuously like a giant jade dragon soaring, hence the name "Jade Dragon." On May 8, 2007, it was officially approved as a national 5A tourist attraction.

Lijiang Ancient Town, also known as Dayan Town, is located in the ancient district of Lijiang City, central Lijiang Basin. Founded in the late Song/early Yuan dynasties, it lies on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The streets are built along mountains and rivers, paved with red cobblestones. Attractions include Sifang Street, Mu Mansion, and Wufeng Tower. Lijiang is one of China's second batch of famous historical and cultural cities and one of two ancient cities successfully inscribed as a World Heritage Site as an entire old town.

Dali Ancient Town, located in western Yunnan Province, is also known as Yeyu City or Purple City. Its history dates back to the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty when the Nanzhao King Geluofeng built Yangjumie City as his new capital. The town was founded in the 15th year of Hongwu (1382) of the Ming Dynasty, covering 3 square kilometers. Dali was among the first 24 historical and cultural cities announced by the State Council on February 8, 1982.

5. Potatso National Park in Shangri-La, Diqing Prefecture, is located in the core area of the "Three Parallel Rivers" World Natural Heritage site in northwest Yunnan. It consists of the internationally important wetland Bita Lake Nature Reserve and the Shudu Lake section of the "Three Parallel Rivers" heritage area. It mainly comprises Bita Lake, Shudu Lake, and Militang subalpine pasture, and is one of the main attractions in Shangri-La.

Kunming Dianchi Lake Scenic Area is a national tourist resort approved by the State Council in October 1992, one of 12 national-level resorts nationwide and the only one located in an inland province. The planned area covers 18.06 square kilometers, bordering Dianchi Lake to the south, connecting to the city center to the north, adjacent to Xishan District to the east, and facing the famous Western Hills Forest Park across the lake to the west.

Lugu Lake: Located in Lugu Lake within the mountains to the left of Yongning Township in northern Ninglang County and Yanyuan County, Sichuan Province. The main village of Lugu Lake, Daluoshui Village, is 73 kilometers from Ninglang County and about 200 kilometers from Lijiang Ancient Town. Lugu Lake is a boundary lake between Sichuan and Yunnan, shared by the two provinces (Sichuan about 2/3, Yunnan about 1/3). It covers over 50 square kilometers, with an altitude of 2,690 meters, average depth of 45 meters, maximum depth of 93 meters, transparency up to 11 meters, and maximum visibility of 12 meters. The lake is clear and blue, the highest-altitude lake in Yunnan and one of the deepest freshwater lakes in China.

Yunnan Travel Tips:

Yunnan has strong UV rays. Must bring enough sun protection: 1. High-SPF sunscreen, at least SPF30+. 2. Sunglasses. 3. Hat or scarf, etc. 4. Moisturizing face mask is essential.

The temperature difference between day and night is large. In summer, bring a light jacket. For northwestern Yunnan in winter, you need a down jacket or windbreaker.
