Damxung, Tibet: A Pristine Journey and a Spiritual Rendezvous
Tibet is a place that captivates the heart: towering snow mountains, sacred lakes lapping at their shores, and steadfast devotion... One day I stumbled upon a video from the filming of 'The Path of Ultimate Purity', which captured behind-the-scenes moments and showcased Damxung's unique landscapes and culture. For those who have been there, these images evoke a deep resonance. This Tibetan musical travel film, 'The Path of Ultimate Purity', has now wrapped up. While eagerly awaiting its release, I find myself even more nostalgic for my journey through Damxung.
If Tibet were a color, it would be blue, and the purest blue surely comes from Namtso. Covering 1,920 square kilometers, it holds the title of Tibet's largest lake. Not only is Namtso a sacred lake for locals, but it's also a must-visit spot for travelers, second only to the Potala Palace on any Tibet itinerary. Standing by its shore, you see blue sky and blue water—so transparent, so utterly pure. Marveling at such a sight, your heart feels intoxicated, yearning to become a wisp of cloud or a drop of water, merging into this pristine world.
The film 'The Path of Ultimate Purity' captures the sublime beauty of the heavenly lake from a unique perspective, but being there in person was far more powerful and soul-stirring than any video. When night falls and stars fill the sky, the heavens feel so close, the silence so profound—it’s as if time stands still. For a glimpse of this sacred highland lake Namtso, I would gladly wander off track time and again.
The sacred lake's waters come from the sacred mountain. Nyenchen Tanglha runs across the entire territory of Damxung, dividing northern, southern, and southeastern Tibet, and serving as the watershed between the Yarlung Tsangpo and Nu rivers. The Wanderer’s Black Tent is located in Yangbajing Township, Damxung County. At 4,300 meters above sea level, it sits amid the ecologically pristine Changtang grasslands, offering a viewpoint of Nyenchen Tanglha's main peak along the road from Lhasa to Namtso—a perfect rest stop for travelers. The black tent is a classic symbol of the nomadic culture of northern Tibet. Its ingenious design blends seamlessly with the surroundings. Starting from the sunken square to the soul post office, we experience seven stages: humility, silence, pilgrimage, blessing, reflection, freedom, and transmission. Facing a pilgrimage toward Nyenchen Tanglha is also an inner cleansing.
In Damxung, Mulan Snow Mountain and Kuoqionggangri Glacier are must-see snow mountain destinations. Legend says that Mulan Snow Mountain is the embodiment of the protective goddess White Lhamo, and that Princess Mulan is the younger sister of the deity Nyenchen Tanglha. She not only brings favorable weather to the land but also bestows love and happiness. Here, pristine white peaks, emerald grasslands, and fluttering prayer flags create harmonious scenes everywhere.
Glaciers give a crisp, austere feeling, and the blue sky and sacred lakes also carry a cool palette, but Damxung also has its warm side. At the Yangbajing Blue Heaven Hot Springs, you can feel the earth's warmth. I first heard about Yangbajing because it’s home to mainland China’s first wet steam field and the world’s highest geothermal power station. Soaking here washes away the dust and fatigue of the road, letting your body relax completely and preparing you for the next leg of your journey.
Damxung’s beauty is not only in its natural scenery; its unique culture is what attracts me most. At the most sacred worship site on the northern Tibetan plateau, before the Eight Stupas of Northern Tibet commemorating General Shaba Danma Xiangcha, you can almost hear the horse hoofbeats of King Gesar charging into battle, while the billowing prayer flags seem to chant the epic of heroes. The 800-year-old Kangma Monastery houses a world-class cultural treasure trove, with over a thousand exquisite stone carvings so lifelike that it deserves to be called the 'Dunhuang of Tibet'.
In Damxung, everything is so natural. The sky, earth, mountains, and rivers present themselves in their most authentic form, utterly unembellished, yet breathtakingly beautiful. It touches the most primal emotions in your heart and stirs the deepest echoes of your soul. In front of such nature, you touch and feel with a pure heart. Once you come to Damxung, you’ll fall in love—with its lush grasslands and sparkling waters, its rich history and devout faith, its pristine nature and vast, rugged grandeur. A journey to Damxung is a stirring experience from the heavenly lake.
