Spectacular Scenery of Damxung, Tibet: Glaciers and Grasslands Meet, and a Modern Café on the Plateau
This is Little Potato's Travel Wanderer's Den, join me to see the world.
I once heard a saying: all children of the gods must visit Tibet. Since childhood, I have longed for Tibet almost with reverence – perhaps for its endless snowy mountains, its majestic Tibetan Buddhist temples, or its dazzling starry skies. I've visited this sacred land more than once. While browsing online not long ago, I came across a set of starry sky photos posted on the official account of The Pure Path, a Tibetan music travel film. The images showed Namtso Lake reflecting the vast, star-filled heavens, and in that moment I remembered standing under the night sky of Namtso myself – the awe and emotion of looking up to see a sky brimming with countless stars.
The Pure Path is a film that chronicles a crew's day-to-day journey in Tibet, from location scouting to filming and wrapping up. Its scenes brought back memories of my own wanderings in Damxung. This sacred land is home to Namtso, one of the three great sacred lakes; Mulang Snow Mountain, the Goddess Mountain; the stunningly beautiful Kuoqionggangri Glacier; the remarkable modern structure of the Traveler's Black Tent; and the cozy warmth of Yangbajing Blue Paradise Hot Spring. Together, this rich geological and natural tapestry creates Damxung's unique scenery.
Damxung County, Tibet, lies north of Lhasa at an altitude of about 4,300 meters. First-time visitors may find breathing a little difficult, but if you come in summer, altitude sickness is rarely an issue. In Tibetan, 'Damxung' means 'chosen pasture,' and the environment is breathtaking. The Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains that span the county and the sacred lake Namtso are both deeply alluring.
I'm sure many people, like me, are more familiar with Namtso. As a sacred lake of Tibet, Namtso is a place you approach with awe. Sunlight, blue sky, and drifting clouds frame the pristine water, which mirrors distant snowy peaks – a spectacle of beauty that leaves you breathless. By the lake, you will often see couples posing for wedding photos.
Strolling along the shore, basking in sunshine and gentle breezes, you can feel Namtso's sanctity and purity. Yaks rest beside the lake, watching travelers come and go. Ancient Tibetan myths are woven into this tranquil sacred lake, making it an unmissable first stop in Damxung.
Kuoqionggangri Glacier is the closest glacier to Lhasa, a natural eco-tourism area that combines glaciers, lakes, and meadows. Without climbing, simply by driving, you can get close and feel the glacier's enchantment. Here, mountains touch the blue sky, their peaks and the ground blanketed in thick snow. The lakes shimmer with a faint turquoise hue, like a fairyland.
Kuoqionggangri is more than just a glacier; you can also enjoy the lakes and meadows beneath it. Nature's landscapes always combine in magical ways. Much of the original wilderness remains, and along the way you might spot lovely wildlife like Tibetan antelopes.
The glacier rises several stories high. Looking up along its icy face, the blue sky seems split apart, with sunlight streaming down – an exquisitely beautiful sight. This pristine white glacier has become a dream backdrop for many wedding photo shoots.
Speaking of glaciers, one cannot miss the snow-capped Mulang Snow Mountain, located in Wumatang Township, Damxung. Its peak is covered with perennial snow that flutters in the wind. At the mountain's foot, caterpillar fungus thrives, attracting many harvesters in season. Mulang Snow Mountain is the embodiment of the protectress goddess Palhamo. Locals believe she can dispel disasters and obstacles, bringing favorable weather and bountiful harvests, so many come here to pay homage.
The Traveler's Black Tent is a modern café on the Qiangtang Grasslands, a strikingly distinctive contemporary building on the northern Tibetan plateau. Meanwhile, Yangbajing Blue Paradise Hot Spring lets you soak in thermal waters with a magnificent view of snowy peaks – a truly rare experience.
Damxung, China's city of sunlight, boasts vast snow-capped mountains and glaciers, as well as the serene and devout Namtso. Its beauty is worth savoring slowly. Before your visit, the film The Pure Path will fulfill all your imaginings of Damxung. I look forward to seeing this stunning land on the big screen soon.
