Exploring the Roof of the World: Surprises at Every Turn, and I’d Gladly ‘Waste Time’ Here!
As times change and attitudes evolve, more and more people want to travel and see the world. What you see and experience on your journeys becomes treasured memories, enriching your world, broadening your horizons, and deepening your knowledge.
Everyone has a personal 'poetry and faraway land' they yearn for, right? But perhaps this place is a shared dream destination! Tibet—a place whose very name makes people yearn for it. How many have it etched in their hearts? Coming here might bring altitude sickness or trouble adjusting, but that can't stop anyone from setting foot on its soil.
This structure, built in the 7th century, is hailed as the 'Pearl on the Roof of the World.' Its palaces of varying sizes cover almost the entire hill. Just a few days ago, a video of the sweet wall splashing went viral on social media.
The mixture splashed on the wall contains milk and white sugar—isn't that the sweetest wall ever? I regret not witnessing the sweet wall ceremony during my previous visit; that might just be one of the reasons that drives me to return to Tibet!
As the ancient saying goes: 'First came the Jokhang Temple, then Lhasa city.' The Jokhang Temple has over 1,300 years of history, built by Songtsen Gampo, and holds a lofty status in Tibet. The most treasured sight inside is the life-sized statue of the ten-year-old Sakyamuni brought by Princess Wencheng when she came to Tibet.
Barkhor Street in Lhasa is a famous pilgrimage circuit, with the original appearance of the old city still preserved along both sides. The spot where Tsangyang Gyatso met his beloved on Barkhor Street has become a must-visit Instagram-worthy location for travelers in Tibet. The walls are covered with messages, each telling a thought-provoking story. Order a cup of sweet tea, chat leisurely with friends—so relaxing and pleasant. I think this might well be the 'poetry and faraway land' everyone dreams of.
Yamdrok Lake, often called 'Yamdro' for short, is the largest inland lake on the northern foothills of the Himalayas. Its scenery is arguably the best in southern Tibet, and it's highly praised by everyone. You have to see it with your own eyes to know how stunningly beautiful Yamdrok Lake really is—no camera can capture even half its beauty. It's a place that seems to have its own built-in filter and natural glow!
April is when it looks its most beautiful. Compared to Yamdrok Lake, it is no less stunning—pure, bright, and incredibly photogenic! I joined a small group tour to get here, and after a tiring journey, all the exhaustion was instantly forgotten at the sight before me! You can imagine how breathtaking the scenery is—it's absolutely worth it!
It has to be said, Tibet is a place never short of stories. How many people come here carrying their own tales, letting the clutter drift away with the fluttering prayer flags, slowly fading into forgetfulness... The landscapes of Tibet may not be the most beautiful you've ever seen, but they will surely become deep, unforgettable memories. Tibet still has so many places worth exploring—which one do you most want to visit?
