China’s Four Great No-Man’s Lands – Hoh Xil, Changtang, Lop Nur, and Altun – lie in Qinghai, Tibet, and Xinjiang. These are life-forbidden zones where death and beauty walk hand in hand, mysterious and magnificent. To explore them fills the heart with awe. With sparse population, inaccessibility, yet stunning landscapes, they have become a favorite for adventurous souls. Dare you go?

Lop Nur, a lake in southeastern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, shaped like a human ear, is known as the 'Ear of the Earth' and also 'Sea of Death'. In ancient text 'Classic of Mountains and Seas', it was called 'You Ze'. Beautiful yet perilous, no one has ever truly conquered it.

The Altun Mountains, in southeastern Xinjiang, are a range surrounded by high peaks. Formed by crustal movements at the end of the Tertiary period, this enclosed intermontane basin has preserved a pristine high-plateau ecosystem. The reserve shelters over 50 rare animal species, including wild camels, wild asses, Tibetan snowcocks, white-shouldered eagles, wild yaks, argali sheep, Pallas's fish eagles, Tibetan gazelles, chiru, bar-headed geese, wild yaks, black-necked cranes, and snow leopards, plus 241 wild plant species. Though one of China's four no-man's lands, Altun teems with life.

Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve is in western Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai, covering 4.5 million hectares. High altitude, cold, and lack of oxygen make it uninhabitable, a 'life forbidden zone'. Yet this very inaccessibility has created the world's largest natural paradise for wildlife, where animals such as Tibetan antelopes, wild yaks, Tibetan wild asses, and Tibetan gazelles thrive undisturbed. The reserve protects these rare species and their habitats.

Changtang National Nature Reserve in northern Tibet, with an average elevation of 4,500-4,800 meters, features complex terrain and unique landforms, showcasing a pristine mountain plateau. It retains the original ecological face of nature. Here, starry lakes, boundless grasslands, snowy peaks and glaciers, as well as numerous endangered species, find a home. Much of northern Changtang is considered a 'no-man's land' or 'life forbidden zone' due to extreme cold, thin air, and poor accessibility, where humans struggle to survive.
