Eighth Stop: Lunang – Nyingchi (80 kilometers)

Just 20 kilometers from Lunang lies the famous Sichuan-Tibet Highway landmark, Sejila Mountain Pass at 4,720 meters. The view is expansive, with the Lunang Forest Sea spreading out below; on clear days, you can see the 7,782-meter Namcha Barwa Peak, once voted the most beautiful mountain in China by Chinese National Geographic. Every time I pass here, I see many travelers stopping to take in the panorama and snap photos. After crossing Sejila Mountain Pass and continuing onward, Nyingchi lies ahead.

Nyingchi, in Tibetan, means 'Throne of the Sun'. At 2,930 meters, with a humid climate and dense vegetation, it is often called the Jiangnan of Tibet. The Yarlung Tsangpo River flows through the area, forming the famous Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, for which it is renowned; the sacred Red Sect lake, Basong Lake, 120 kilometers from Nyingchi, is a holiday paradise; and the celebrated Peach Blossom Festival takes place here. The famous Gala Village Peach Garden is right beside Highway 318. Every year from mid-March to mid-April, when peach blossoms are in full bloom, visitors from all directions flock here for a spring rendezvous.

Bayi Town is the central urban area of Nyingchi, a relatively modern small city and the most bustling part of the region. Shopping, dining, accommodation, and car or vehicle rental are all convenient. Whether arriving from Lhasa or Sichuan, travelers stopping over or visiting will rest here—it's an essential supply and rest point, as well as a hub for exploring Nyingchi city and surrounding attractions.

1. If you're keen to visit the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, it's only a few dozen kilometers from Bayi Town. A day trip is feasible; the road is in good condition with lovely scenery, and you can also visit the Yani National Wetland Park, the Yarlung Tsangpo River, and the Buddha's Palm Sand Dune along the way.

Ninth Stop: Nyingchi – Gongbogyamda – Lhasa (410 kilometers)

After thoroughly enjoying Nyingchi, head toward the final stop on the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway: Lhasa. Along the way, admire the Xiuba Thousand-Year Watchtowers (Gesar Ancient Castle), Nyang River scenery, and the Midstream Pillar rock. Then you arrive at the 5,013-meter Mira Mountain Pass, the geographical boundary between Nyingchi and Lhasa and the last high pass before reaching Lhasa on the G318. Mira Mountain is a sacred peak for local Tibetans, and travelers pause here for photos. The towering mountains and high passes haven't defeated us—what a blessing. Descending, we headed straight for Lhasa with light and joyful hearts.

Although I'd been to Lhasa many times before, it had always been by air or train; arriving here by self-driving along the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway was a first. As we crossed the Lhasa River Bridge and the city came into view, the moment was deeply moving—beyond sheer happiness, there was true excitement. After crossing mountains and rivers, dusty and windswept, facing tough challenges and countless hardships, we had finally completed the self-drive journey we'd long dreamed of and reached Lhasa, the city that had haunted our thoughts. How could we not be overjoyed and moved!

Lhasa (elevation 3,650 meters) means 'Holy Land' or 'Buddha Land' in Tibetan. It is the political, economic, cultural, and religious center of Tibet, a historic city with over 1,300 years of history, a national historical and cultural city, and one of the highest cities in the world. With its azure sky, clear rivers, fresh air, and warm sunshine, it draws travelers from all over the globe. Today, Lhasa is not only a sacred place for Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims but also a holy land in the hearts of countless travelers.

Lhasa's attractions are abundant and varied. There are Chinese world heritage sites: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Norbulingka; must-see places like Potala Palace Square and Barkhor Street; and distinctive monasteries such as Drepung and Sera that are well worth visiting. The Potala Palace, with its distinctive Tibetan style and majestic presence, is the largest and best-preserved palace-fortress complex in Tibet, hailed as one of the world's top ten earthen architecture masterpieces, and features on the back of the 50-yuan RMB note.

1. From Nyingchi to Lhasa, the Lalin Expressway is now open. If you're in a hurry, take it and you'll reach in half a day—fast and convenient. But if time allows, stick to National Highway 318. The Xiuba ancient watchtowers, the Midstream Pillar, and the 5,013-meter Mira Mountain Pass are only accessible via the old highway. (A tunnel has now opened through Mira Mountain, so the expressway bypasses the pass.)

2. The Potala Palace is a must-see in Lhasa. Visitor numbers are high and daily tickets limited, so book online or through a travel agency in advance.

3. Three great spots for viewing and photographing the Potala Palace: the Chakpori (Medicine King Mountain) observation deck southwest of the palace, which frames classic white stupas and a side panorama; Potala Palace Square, for a full frontal view; and the lake in Zongjiao Lukang Park, where you can capture the palace's reflection from the rear.

With an average elevation above 4,000 meters, Tibet forms the main body of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is known as the 'Roof of the World'. Its complex terrain and varied landforms create a unique highland climate. The natural landscapes and cultural scenes shaped by this distinct geography attract countless travel enthusiasts. Tibet's unique snow-capped highland scenery, charming Tibetan cultural expressions, and the distinctive human landscapes that blend with nature give Tibet a special allure in travelers' eyes.

Every year, tens of thousands of travel lovers choose the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway to enter Tibet. Though the journey is long and extremely arduous, it carries an abundance of scenery and beauty, surprises and wonders, stories and adventures, feelings and awe.

For every self-drive enthusiast, the route from Chengdu to Lhasa via the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway has a conventional start and end, but unconventional ways to play and different journeys of the heart. Along the way, you are mesmerized by suddenly looming snow mountains, glaciers, lakes, grasslands, and forests, baptized by the beauty that unfolds. At the same time, you must stay laser-focused on the road, making the driving itself an immense challenge. This tests one's willpower, driving skills, and the ability to manage time, companions, and budget.

Thus, no matter how many places and roads you've driven, you have to admit that the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway is forever a classic among classics. Precisely because it is so demanding, it is even more challenging, leaving every traveler who has driven it with deep emotion and an indelible mark on their memory.

On the endless snowy highland road, you see landscapes you've never seen, experience emotions you've never felt, and encounter countless surprises. The unique scenery and irreplaceable experiences along this road are unforgettable. This is perhaps why so many are stirred by the slogan 'Drive 318 once in your life, head west to Lhasa' and choose the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway to enter Tibet—the reason and the footnote.

1. As times change, road conditions on the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway are getting better and better. Many of the dozen-plus passes above 4,000 meters now have tunnels. However, to see the most beautiful scenery, you must brave the original high passes.

2. While drinking in the views, always be aware of the hidden dangers. Stay focused and drive cautiously. It's best to have at least two experienced drivers in the vehicle who can take turns, so the journey doesn't become unbearably tiring.

3. The Sichuan-Tibet self-drive route is long; plan your itinerary wisely to balance activity and rest. Never rush so much that you forget to enjoy the scenery. The pattern of leaving early and arriving late, exhausted and racing all day, should only be a rare exception, not the norm. Driving at night multiplies the risk.

4. Keep ample water, food, oxygen, and warm clothing in the car for emergencies. The terrain is perilous, the weather changeable; landslides, roadbed collapses, and jams due to weather or accidents are common. We were once stuck for six hours near the 4,000-meter Sejila Mountain Pass because of weather. Without thorough preparation, consequences could be serious.
