When in Lijiang, You Must Try Staying at the Foot of the Snow Mountain
Thousands of hotels in Lijiang, but only one lets you hold Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in your hands.
In Lijiang, whether you're in Dayan Ancient Town or right next to Shuhe Ancient Town, most hotels sell the distant view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. But only this hotel, located within the snow mountain scenic area, looks west to Jade Dragon as if you could reach out and touch it, and is just a walk away from the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Visitor Center. Today, I’ve arrived at this very place—Jinmao Purelax Mountain Hotel, Lijiang.
Unrivaled Prime Location
The hotel is managed by Jinmao Hotel Group, renowned for creating landmark properties—from the Grand Hyatt at Jinmao Tower in Shanghai, to the epic luxury Jinmao Ritz-Carlton in Sanya’s Yalong Bay, or the Jinmao Renaissance Hotel in Beijing occupying a prime spot in Wangfujing, all are truly impressive. And this one in Lijiang is the only luxury resort within the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain National Scenic Area.
The very process of getting here speaks to its uniqueness. All guests must first check in and collect a mountain pass at the front desk of the Jinmao Grand Hyatt Selected Hotel in northern Lijiang city, then take a 30-minute car ride to the hotel. Along the way, you’ll pass the ticket gate for the Lijiang Snow Mountain scenic area—with the pass, entry is free; otherwise, you’d need to buy an admission ticket yourself.
Tip: There’s a daily complimentary shuttle bus between Jinmao Grand Hyatt Selected Hotel and Jinmao Purelax Mountain Hotel (reservation required), the most affordable way to reach the mountain hotel.
The hotel sits on the Ganhaizi meadow at 3,100 meters altitude, backed by Cimeige Mountain to the east, and with the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club to the west. The first stop for all visitors entering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain—the main visitor center—is at the fork leading to the hotel. Whether you're heading to the Impression Lijiang theatre, taking the Glacier Cable Car, or the eco-bus to Blue Moon Valley, this is the essential route.

Encounter Slow Time at Purelax
If you truly want to appreciate this hotel, remember one thing: slow down.
“Let go of ‘self-centered’ obsessions, feel the insignificance of the individual under the starry sky and snow mountain.” Here, walk slowly, look slowly, breathe slowly—only then can you feel at one with this world.
Slowly, Sunlight Bathes the Golden Peak
At Jinmao Purelax Mountain Hotel, this is a spectacle no one should miss. Every guest room terrace is a perfect spot to witness the “Golden Mountain at sunrise.” To maximize viewing angles, the hotel has even built a dedicated snow mountain observation deck.

But I discovered an even more enchanting viewing spot: the hotel’s yoga room. Outside it, there’s a waterside platform, where you can see the “Golden Mountain” reflected! The best time to enjoy this is between 6:30 and 8:00 a.m.—the sun rises late and climbs slowly, from the first glow to the golden light enveloping the peak. The most glorious way to capture it is definitely time-lapse photography!
Slow Steps, Heartfelt Feelings
Here, you can hardly move briskly—first, the scenery is so breathtaking you can’t help but drink it all in; second, being at high altitude, walking slowly and breathing deeply is one of the best ways to avoid the effects of altitude sickness.
Tip: Jinmao Purelax Mountain Hotel provides two complimentary oxygen bottles per room, so you can prepare ahead if you feel any discomfort from low oxygen.

Slow Time, Occasional Inspiration
Many are drawn to Lijiang by the book “Soft Time in Lijiang,” once hugely popular for its depictions of Naxi culture. Its tranquility, depth, and mystery are filled with life’s inspirations, making it a sought-after destination. In the mountain hotel, vivid local flavor is everywhere, including many items of Yunnan’s intangible cultural heritage.

Here, time seems to stand still, and everything is imbued with sentiment. Dongba wood carvings, handwoven rugs, Bai tie-dye, Shuhe leather art, iconic Naxi prayer bells and pictographs, and even sand mandala painting art!

Zen permeates the hotel—its sounds, its scents—and everyone naturally settles into calm. From public area settings to guest room arrangements, everything is just right, resolutely expressing the strength of local culture.

Since we’ve mentioned the rooms, why not stay and experience this “hidden luxury retreat” beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Snow Mountain Views within Reach
The hotel buildings, rising from the alpine meadow, follow traditional Naxi ancient village design—high in the east, low in the west, with distinct layers. Yet the sprawling complex houses only 89 rooms, all suites or villas.
Guest rooms are spread across detached traditional-village-style buildings, enclosed by beautifully disarrayed courtyards full of life and comfort. Curved eaves with classical Chinese elegance, and a building style blending brick, stone, and timber in harmony with nature, create wonderfully relaxing havens.
Each residential block is different, so layouts vary—but every room shares a breathtaking, private terrace with an unobstructed 180-degree view of the snow mountain, as if Jade Dragon is within arm’s reach.
The smallest suites start from 86 square meters, with warm wood tones and a sense of understated luxury. Generous use of aged solid wood, decorated with Naxi artifacts, gives a strong sense of place. In-floor heating, deep soaking tubs, and from bedside control panels to bath amenities, bedding, and tea sets—the hallmarks of a luxury hotel are exquisitely present, like a warm home at the foot of the snow mountain.
The Snow Mountain Executive Suite offers a spacious 134 square meters. Along with an even more spectacular terrace, it features a specially designed indoor lounge area for gazing out. A more-private bedroom cleverly frames the snow mountain view with floor-to-ceiling windows, turning Jade Dragon into a living backdrop, so you’ll be reluctant to draw the curtains.
A Taste of the Snow Mountain
As the only all-day dining restaurant within the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area, Snow View Pavilion is where I headed most often during my stay. The restaurant itself is well-designed, incorporating Naxi Dongba elements, even stunning decorative pieces inspired by sand mandala art. Another highlight is the outdoor terrace—yet another superb spot to admire Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
I chose to have breakfast on the terrace, waking up together with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
I also made a point to try their much-acclaimed yak meat hotpot. The unexpectedly tender flavor gave me a whole new understanding of yak as an ingredient. No wonder some visitors come all the way after their mountain tour just to savor it—it seems to have become an essential part of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain experience.
They also serve afternoon tea, where you can enjoy the view and flavors, whiling away time in slow living.
Rich Recreational Facilities
The hotel gym, though offering snow mountain views, is probably too much of a high-altitude anaerobic workout for most guests.
I originally came for the snow mountain but ended up being won over by the wealth of other activities; the activities concierge at the front desk kept my days wonderfully organized.
In the afternoon, I tried a drumming class at the foot of the snow mountain, learning about the hand drum’s origins and rhythm control, gradually finding the breath to drum rhythmically (background music).
After dark, you can visit the hotel’s science center for a Starry Night themed event. Indoors, a guide explained trending phenomena like the supermoon and meteors, then we went outside for stargazing. Weather permitting, we observed the moon and the guide even took photos for us—such a beautiful, unforgettable experience.
The hotel is just 5 minutes from the bus transfer point for Blue Moon Valley. You can gaze at the snow mountain without climbing it, but Blue Moon Valley is an absolute must-visit.
Back at the hotel in the evening, I booked a 90-minute spa treatment to soothe the day’s fatigue and the subtle “heaviness” of thin oxygen—a truly complete mind-body relaxation.
This is Jinmao Purelax Mountain Hotel, Lijiang. On your next trip to Lijiang, you must give it a try!
It’s the kind of hotel where you won’t want to draw the curtains.
