Yunnan has so much to offer, both in terms of landscapes and cultural richness. Among all the possible itineraries, the most classic one is definitely the Kunming–Dali–Lijiang–Lugu Lake route. It’s suitable for all seasons and all types of travelers. Keep this detailed guide handy and set off for Yunnan now~ For my trip this year, I had the golden tour guide Xiao Wang arrange our itinerary. Over six days, everything was taken care of by Xiao Wang – star-rated hotels, attraction tickets, local transport, local guides, meals, and all travel logistics. We had a great time, and the cost was surprisingly low, just over 1000 per person – an absolute steal! If you're interested, you can private message me for more details.

1. Why Do Most First-Timers Choose Kunming + Dali + Lijiang?

1. Convenient Transport: Whether flying in from other cities or traveling between these three places, transport is easy. Kunming is the main transport hub of Yunnan, with numerous flights and cheap airfares. What's more, the new high-speed train to Dali has been launched, and it's just over two hours by train between Dali and Lijiang.

2. Concentration of Classic Attractions: Yunnan’s tourism resources are incredibly rich. Even two or three visits couldn’t cover everything, but the most iconic sights are centered in Dali and Lijiang. The Kunming-Dali-Lijiang route allows you to experience the most highlights within a limited time.

3. Suitable for All Travelers: The scenic areas in these three places are relatively well-developed, offering both classic photo spots and off-the-beaten-path experiences. Accommodation, dining, and transport are all reliable. Whether you're a first-time visitor to Yunnan, traveling with parents, on a family trip, a couple’s getaway, or a friends’ outing, it’s perfect.

2. Transport Between the Three Destinations

Kunming → Dali:

Train: Since the opening of the high-speed line, the journey takes only about two hours, with frequent services from early morning until 9 p.m. A second-class seat costs 145 yuan.

Bus: Most buses take around 6 hours. You can catch a bus to Dali at Kunming West Bus Station. The entire route is on expressways, with tickets costing 80–140 yuan.

Dali → Lijiang:

Train: There are two trains daily from Dali to Lijiang, departing at 17:15 and 19:05. From Lijiang to Dali, there are also two departures, at 7:00 and 16:00. The journey takes a little over two hours, with a hard seat ticket priced at 34 yuan.

Bus: Buses depart on a rolling basis from Dali Bus Station and Dali North Bus Station between 7:10 and 19:00, roughly every half hour. Tickets range from 50 to 80 yuan.

Kunming → Lijiang:

Train: Services are concentrated after 8 p.m., departing in the evening and arriving the next morning, taking about eight to nine hours – ideal if you want an overnight sleeper.

Bus: Buses can be taken from Kunming West Bus Station or the Long-Distance Bus Station. Tickets cost 140–200 yuan, and the trip takes about 10 hours.

3. Must-Visit Spots on the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang Route

Kunming – More Than Just a Transit Point

Green Lake Park – Experience Livable Kunming

This central park is steeped in a rich cultural atmosphere, with many former residences of celebrities. In summer, the lake is full of lotus flowers; in winter, red-billed gulls from Siberia arrive. No matter the season, you'll see many elderly locals doing morning exercises here. Only when you visit can you truly feel how livable Kunming is.

Suggested visit: 1 hour

Army Lecture Hall – A Century-Old Military Academy, Cradle of Generals

This is a famous modern Chinese military academy that nurtured a host of military leaders, including Zhu De and Ye Jianying. Located west of Green Lake Park, you can visit it after strolling the park. The bright yellow Republican-era building stands out. The interior is open to visitors, and the furnishings and settings remain largely unchanged from the old days.

Opening hours: Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00

Ticket: Free

Yunnan University – A Century of History

A prestigious university with a hundred-year legacy, the campus is filled with historic buildings and landscapes rich in cultural ambience. The iconic Huize Hall, the Yingqiu Hall designed by Lin Huiyin, and the university spirit of “Gathering All Brilliance, Serving the Public Good” are all highlights. In autumn, the famous ginkgo avenue is a must-see, and you might even spot some adorable squirrels.

Opening hours: All day

Suggested visit: 1–3 hours

Stone Forest – Nature’s Masterpiece

No matter what type of trip you’re on, I recommend adding the classic Stone Forest to your list. It showcases nature’s fantastic craftsmanship and dramatic karst landscapes. The area is mainly divided into Greater Stone Forest and Lesser Stone Forest. Be sure to listen to a guide’s commentary, or you’ll just be glancing at rocks without learning the stories behind them.

Opening hours: 08:00–18:00

Ticket: 175 yuan, plus 25 yuan for the battery car

Dianchi Lake – Encounter Red-Billed Gulls

Dianchi is Yunnan’s largest freshwater lake, about half an hour from downtown. Compared to Green Lake Park, it has a grander feel and is hailed as the “Pearl of the Plateau.” In winter, the red-billed gulls circling here are an iconic sight. Flocks of gulls taking off over the shimmering lake is a scene photography enthusiasts cannot miss.

Ticket: Free

Suggested visit: 1–3 hours

Dounan Flower Market – Flowers at Bargain Prices

This is Asia’s largest flower market, with enormous variety and flowers sold by weight – at unbelievably low prices. Whether you go to witness the traders in action or to buy a bouquet for yourself, it’s an experience not to be missed. Wholesale trading starts around 20:45, with the liveliest hours from 21:00 to midnight. During the day, sellers are fewer and the flowers less fresh, so it’s best to come at night.

Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Archway – Kunming’s Landmark Commercial Street

This is a symbolic Kunming landmark and a distinctive shopping street. Opposite the archway is Kunming’s pedestrian street, a nice place for an evening stroll.

Dali – More Than Just Romance

Dali Ancient Town – The Ancient Nanzhao Capital at the Foot of Cangshan Mountain

Inside the old town, apart from Wuhua Tower as the classic landmark, there’s no single must-see sight, yet the whole town is worth wandering. Stroll through its lanes, browse the unique shops, little bars, and snack stalls. Renmin Road is the main street and the busiest.

Ticket: Free

Transport: Take bus No. 8 from Dali Railway Station

Suggested visit: 2 hours to half a day

Erhai Lake – A Romantic Panorama of Wind, Flowers, Snow, and Moonlight

It’s no exaggeration that Erhai Lake is Dali’s most anticipated attraction. All around the lake are picturesque spots: artsy roads, vast flower fields, transparent hanging chairs, and the iconic white tables set against the lake backdrop – all classic Erhai images in people’s minds. Combine a photo tour around Erhai with a night in a lake-view room, and your trip couldn’t be more perfect.

Photogenic spots for a circuit around Erhai Lake:

1. Xizhou Ancient Town

2. Haishe Park

3. White bus

4. Abandoned and upside-down boats

5. Haixi water station

6. Flower fields

7. Insta-famous white table and glass chair

8. Lakeside rocks

9. Lover’s Cliff

10. Little Putuo Island

Dali Winter Cherry Blossoms – A Photographer’s Paradise

While the north is still frozen, Dali welcomes winter cherry blossoms, drawing countless photographers. These winter cherries are a special Yunnan variety. The most famous viewing spot is Cherry Blossom Valley in Wuliang Mountain, with blooming typically from late November to mid-December. During the festival, direct buses run from Dali Xiaguan to the valley. Another option is Dali University, which is more conveniently located right next to the old town. In cherry blossom season, the roads and hillsides within the campus are covered in blooms.

Lijiang – More Than Just Chance Encounters

Lijiang Ancient Town – Wooden Buildings, Grey Tiles, Stone-Paved Lanes, Streams and Bridges

Lijiang Ancient Town comprises Dayan Old Town and Shuhe Ancient Town. When people casually refer to “Lijiang Old Town,” they usually mean Dayan. Well-known spots include Sifang Street, the Big Waterwheel, Lion Hill, Wangu Tower, and Mufu Palace. If you like a lively atmosphere, there’s a bar street at night. However, sightseeing is far from the essence of Lijiang Old Town. The real charm lies in wandering aimlessly, and when tired, settling into a café for a coffee while listening to music.

Lashihai – Ancient Tea Horse Road

Lashihai is famous for its Tea Horse Road history, beautiful wetlands, and migratory birds. The main activities here are horse riding and boating. A day trip from Lijiang is feasible, but public transport isn’t very convenient, and the area has long been associated with tourist traps. I recommend joining a tour to avoid hassles and pitfalls.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain – The Sacred Mountain of the Naxi People

A must-visit in Lijiang. Highlights along the route include Glacier Park, Spruce Meadow, Blue Moon Valley, Yak Meadow, and Ganhaizi. The classic and most common route passes through Ganhaizi and Blue Moon Valley, then takes the large cable car to Glacier Park. The best time to visit is from November to March, when snow coverage is at its peak.

Tickets: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area ticket: 100 yuan. Jade Dragon Grand Pass: 205 yuan. Glacier Park large cable car: 120 yuan. Spruce Meadow small cable car: 55 yuan. Yak Meadow medium cable car: 60 yuan.

Lishui Jinsha – A Spectacular Performance Not to Be Missed

Lishui Jinsha presents Lijiang’s ethnic culture through dance, poetry, and painting in four parts: “Prelude,” “Water,” “Mountain,” and “Love.” Featuring the Snow Mountain Goddess, the grace of the Dai people, and Mosuo love stories, it showcases the splendor of Yunnan’s various minority groups. You can also see the only surviving pictographic script in the world – Dongba characters. After admiring the mountain by day, enjoy this show by night – an unmissable performance in Lijiang.

Lugu Lake – The Enchanting Eastern Kingdom of Women

Home to the mysterious Mosuo people and their walking marriage tradition, Lugu Lake enchants with its clear, blue waters. With the opening of highways and flights, plus the influence of the TV show “Dear Inn,” this once-hidden paradise is gaining more and more attention. Must-do experiences: circumnavigate the lake, ride a unique Zhucao boat to pick otelia-like blossoms, stroll on the Walking Marriage Bridge overlooking the Grass Sea, watch the sunset at Goddess Bay, take in the panoramic view from the observation deck, and enjoy authentic Mosuo dishes at a local home.

Ticket: 100 yuan per person

Bus: Buses depart from Lijiang Bus Station each morning for Daluoshui at Lugu Lake. The journey takes about 4.5–5 hours and costs around 70 yuan.

4. Food Recommendations on the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang Route

1. Kunming’s most famous dish is Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles. Besides the well-known Qiaoxiangyuan, locals also frequent Xiaqiao Douhua Rice Noodles, Wenshan Hexianju, and Dongchun Small Pot Rice Noodles.

2. In Dali Ancient Town, the must-tries are Zaihui Shou Liangji Rice Noodles and Yang’s Grilled Dairy Fan. If your itinerary includes Xizhou, make sure to try the local Xizhou Baba, available in both sweet and savory versions. Er Si (rice cakes) – soft, glutinous, and chewy – are in no way inferior to rice noodles. The above are local snacks; if you want a full Bai ethnic meal, head to Gujing Private Kitchen, another favorite among locals.

3. Lijiang: If there’s one dish that best represents Lijiang cuisine, it’s cured spare rib hotpot. The best versions aren’t found inside the old town. Two highly recommended spots frequented by locals are Ama Spare Ribs (near the south gate of the old town) and Apo Spare Ribs (near the north gate slope market). Native Chicken Hotpot is a specialty of Lashihai – try it if you visit there. Freshwater Salmon: Unlike the common sea salmon, Lijiang’s version is a trout raised in snow-melt water. The texture differs slightly, but it’s equally delicious. Recommended restaurant: Tuojiang Fish Mansion. For other snacks, 88 Snack Shop inside the old town is very popular and often packed. Their pea jelly, small pot rice noodles, sour plum drink, and fried rice are all signature items.

5. Why I Recommend Joining a Group Tour

1. Although all the places introduced are on the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang route, distances between attractions are still significant. If you travel independently, you’ll waste a lot of time waiting for transport connections. A group tour eliminates that worry – the itinerary takes care of all transport. A spacious, comfortable coach greatly reduces fatigue on long journeys.

2. Overall, Yunnan hotels offer great experiences but aren’t cheap. Think lake-view rooms by Erhai, hot spring hotels in Kunming, or Naxi-style inns in Lijiang’s old town. Joining a tour allows you to enjoy more diverse, high-quality accommodation at a lower cost.

3. Independent travel lets you set your own schedule and visit only what interests you, but the downside is difficult transfers and the inability to see as much. Our itineraries cover the most classic spots across Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Lugu Lake, combining iconic sights with hidden gems so you can tick off more places in limited time. It’s ideal for first-time visitors to Yunnan, those not confident traveling solo, or people with no time to plan.
