Lijiang | The Naxi Traditional Culture and Stories Are Even More Beautiful Than the Scenery
Remember the line from 'A Meter of Sunshine': Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Lijiang is veiled in mist all year round, and only during the autumn equinox does a meter-long ray of sunlight break through. Legend says those touched by that ray will find beautiful love…
Of all the wonderful places I visited in Lijiang, the one that left the deepest impression was the Snow Mountain Canyon Performing Arts Park. The newly upgraded performances are even more spectacular. It's about a 20-kilometer drive from Lijiang Old Town to the park at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Guides lead you through the entire visit. 🏔️ If you come to Lijiang, you must see Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Blue Moon Valley, but if you want a different kind of scenery, you absolutely have to visit Snow Mountain Canyon Performing Arts Park at the mountain's base. On the mountain itself, you can't capture its full grandeur, but here you can.

Snow Mountain Canyon Performing Arts Park collaborates with teacher Yu Rongguang, drawing on Lijiang's thousand-year culture and the stories of Mufu to create 'The Seven Shows of Snow Mountain Canyon Performing Arts Park' – the Ethnic Welcoming Show, Naxi Blessing Show, Gold Mine Robbery Show, Tea Horse Road Folk Song Show, Naxi Love Sacrifice Show, Flower Street Interactive Show, and 'Snow Mountain Myth' Stage Show. These performances present ancient traditional customs and ethnic culture in innovative ways, delivering an immersive atmosphere and experience. Within the canyon, there are also static cultural exhibits such as Muzeng's Scripture Carving, the Mufu Gold Mine, the Ancient Tea Horse Road, and the Mufu Academy. Through scenic sculpture groups, they vividly display the economic prosperity of the Mufu era, Naxi folk customs, and the cultural fusion of Han, Naxi, and Tibetan peoples in Lijiang.

🌊 When you think of Lijiang, the Old Town and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain probably come to mind first, or maybe the TV series 'Mufu Legend.' Lately, the giant themed photo spot – Snow Mountain Canyon Performing Arts Park – themed around 'Mufu Legend' is also well worth a visit. ·🌊 From the old town, it's a 20-kilometer drive, and there's a parking lot at the entrance, making it very convenient. This is probably the best angle for photographing the snow mountain. ·🌊 Style tips: I highly recommend light-colored clothes for both men and women; white is best. Ladies, definitely wear a dress – the photos turn out beautifully. Inside the park, you can also rent costumes like those from the TV series, adding an extra authentic touch!
·🌊 Super photogenic spots: 1. Snowy Flower Sea: With Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as the backdrop and cherry blossoms in the foreground, strolling through the flower sea lets you capture both winter and summer in one shot. 2. Sky Mirror: Many places have sky mirrors, but only here can you capture one with a snow mountain – and Lijiang's incredibly blue sky is a bonus. · 3. Glass Plank Bridge: This is the highest glass bridge in the country, spanning a canyon with the 5,596-meter Jade Dragon Snow Mountain behind. Be sure to go on a sunny day for the best photo results.
🌊 Large-scale live performances: The park hosts seven grand performances; six are outdoors with different themes, and one is indoors. The indoor show tells a 40-minute love story of the Naxi people in Lijiang.
🌊 Food: Yunnan's famous fresh flower cakes taste best straight from the oven. The authentic chickpea jelly, found only in Lijiang, is crispy outside and tender inside. Braised noodles cost just over 10 yuan – a super fair price and, more importantly, delicious!
Sanduo's divine warriors and Naxi Dongba priests recreate the millennium-old 'Sanduo Festival' drum blessing ceremony, presenting the sacred, mysterious, and magical traditions of 'offering to the god of war' and 'paying homage to the snow mountain.'
Step onto the blessing altar beneath the snow mountain. The resplendent 'Golden Summit of the Snow Mountain' radiates light in all directions, complementing the main peak and symbolizing the destination of ethnic faith. Hundreds of totem poles encircle the altar, their ancient symbols conveying the timeless spirit of the Naxi people.
The Great Dongba rings the Bunong bell, praying to the Naxi guardian deity 'Sanduo' on behalf of humanity. Feel the sacred, mysterious, and magical tradition of 'offering to the god of war' and 'paying homage to the snow mountain.'
Naxi wind-bell blessings have a history of a thousand years. Obtaining a wind bell consecrated by a Dongba, imbued with blessings, and hanging it on the blessing altar is the most devout and effective way of making wishes in the hearts of the Naxi people. Visitors can follow this tradition and request a consecrated wind bell to pray for health and safety for their families.
There is poetry within the mirror, where poems can flow with elegance and capture grace. The Snow Mountain Mirror merges heaven and earth, capturing blue sky, white clouds, and snowy peaks on its surface, as if folding time and space…
Standing lightly upon the Snow Mountain Mirror, where the sea and sky meet as if strolling among clouds, you can imprint a silhouette of time in this mirror realm. Stepping on blue sky and white clouds, gazing at surrounding peaks, you can become the figure in a dream, robes fluttering, ethereal and exquisite… In the interplay of light and shadow, freeze the scene with your camera, frame a picture of pure elegance, and leave behind a stunning glimpse.
The Sky Plank Trail, veiled in mist for a hundred zhang, cannot be measured by mere footsteps. Reflections of white clouds above, forests of the canyon below, you walk as if treading on clouds and stepping through seclusion. A walk upon it is a fantastical journey, with romance and joy leaping in your heart!
The beautiful red plank trail, a splash of allure connecting the valley, blends the red of the bridge, the blue of the sky, the green of the forest, and the white of snow into a gorgeous frame. Gazing into the firmament, looking down at dappled shadows, just a light lean against a railing becomes an infinitely charming silhouette cut against the sky.

In 'Mufu Legend,' Muzeng and Aleiqiu once pledged to sacrifice their love. This is our Love Sacrifice Flower Valley, much like the legendary 'Third Kingdom of Jade Dragon' where morning mist and drifting clouds serve as curtains, and green grass and fresh flowers become carpets. If lovers cannot be together in life, they vow to sacrifice together. The Third Kingdom of Jade Dragon is the ideal realm of love, where lovers who die for love travel together to find eternal happiness.
The Naxi Love Sacrifice Show: a breathtaking, tragically beautiful cliffside spectacle. Muzeng and Aleiqiu, clad in wedding attire, 'pledge love through sacrifice,' suspended in the air with lingering tenderness, both thrilling and heart-wrenching. Their red silhouettes against the valley will move you deeply.
The canyon retains its thousand-year-old appearance, with mountains and waters interspersed, ancient towering trees, and luxuriant flowers and plants. As you lose yourself in it, you surrender body and mind to nature, embracing a time of peace and tranquility! Snow mountains, canyons, flower seas, highlands, cliffs, forests, waterfalls, lakes… The park overflows with natural splendor, and your journey through time begins with stepping into a timeless natural wonder.
The large-scale stage show innovatively fuses three great epics – 'The Creation,' 'The Battle of Black and White,' and 'Luban Lubao' – to vividly portray love for nature, love for family and country, and faithful love. It lets you deeply sense the long-standing ethnic history and culture, and the Naxi people's pursuit of beauty and freedom.
The grand stage performance 'Snow Mountain Myth' innovatively blends the three epics 'The Creation,' 'The Battle of Black and White,' and 'Luban Lubao,' dynamically dramatizing love for nature, patriotic love, and steadfast love. It allows a profound appreciation of the ancient ethnic history and culture, and the Naxi people's yearning for beauty and freedom. The story follows modern young man Ajiang, who, by chance, travels back through time to ancient Lijiang. With the help of deities, he builds an army of righteousness, defeats the evil demon king, restores peace to the world, and embarks on a faithful love affair with tribal princess Ali that spans a thousand years.

With a huge investment, an immersive theater has been built, using technology to enhance the stage effects. Naked-eye 3D technology, holographic projection… the ultimate coordination of sound, light, and electricity creates an immersive viewing experience. The theater's large-screen system, stage design and scenery system, high-wire rigging system, and lighting control system work together seamlessly to build a deeply compelling ancient Lijiang setting, making the entire theater a 'black-tech theater model.'
What surprises audiences even more is that the performance space extends from the stage to the entire theater: drumming dancers among the audience seats, wire performers who appear and vanish instantly above, a giant eagle suddenly swooping overhead… The entire show is filled with unexpected interactive performance techniques, making the audience feel more immersed. No longer just spectators, you become adventurous explorers freely discovering this spectacle!

With the support of the stage and technology, it creates a fully three-dimensional theater experience featuring scene immersion, sensory immersion, and story immersion, presenting a highly spectacular stage masterpiece. It is the essential stage show for understanding Lijiang's history, Dongba culture, and ethnic culture.
