Yunnan Travel Guide: Essential Highlights

A while back, I traveled to Yunnan with a friend. Yunnan left me with these impressions: healing blue skies, charming ancient towns, majestic snow mountains, diverse folk customs, with history-soaked Lijiang & Dali Ancient Towns, Shangri-La as paradise on earth, the plateau pearl Lugu Lake, the magnificent Yulong Snow Mountain... Yunnan is a healing place perfect for slow travel with a camera, where you can feel the true meaning of travel in a time-worn film-like atmosphere.

Both my friend and I were first-time long-distance travelers, and we had no idea what to prepare, how to plan the route, or where to book hotels. So to save trouble, we chose Asima, a local independent travel planner recommended by a good friend. Asima arranged a 6-day, 5-night trip for us, including hotels (characteristic courtyard inns & luxury sea-view rooms), tickets, transportation, meals, guide, and airport transfers—all one-stop service. We visited must-see attractions like Lijiang, Dali Ancient Town, Shangri-La, Lugu Lake, and Erhai Lake. We also joined a Naxi bonfire party with group dancing, experiencing different ethnic cultures. It was a very happy trip, with a well-organized itinerary that didn't feel rushed or pressured. My friend and I were both very satisfied!

And regarding the travel cost that the poster just mentioned, which is a top concern for travelers, our per-person cost for these 6 days was very reasonable and good value. I personally found the travel service and experience excellent. In short, happiness is priceless.

Let me share our itinerary: two days per scenic area, covering Kunming + Dali + Lijiang, to fully enjoy Yunnan!

Day 1: Arrival in Kunming (A'duo picks us up) – Check into a Kunming hot spring hotel.

Since guests arrive at different times, no meals are arranged today. You can enjoy local specialties on your own.

Day 2: 5A Stone Forest Scenic Area – Taste local special wild mushroom hotpot.

After breakfast, depart for the Stone Forest to explore the karst wonders of the Stone Forest scenic area, listening to each stone tell you its story.

After lunch, head to Chuxiong. On the way, enjoy Pu'er tea to relieve fatigue. Upon arriving in Chuxiong, have dinner with wild mushroom hotpot, experiencing ethnic-style singing and dancing as part of the meal. After the itinerary, check into the hotel.

Day 3: Dali Ancient Town + Special boat ride, check-in at an Instagram-worthy photo spot.

After breakfast, depart for Dali and take a cruise to admire Erhai Lake and watch the 'Cormorant Show.' (Dali Ancient Town faces the rippling Erhai Lake to the east and leans against the year-round green Cangshan Mountain to the west, forming a city pattern of 'water encircling Cangshan, Cangshan embracing the ancient town.') After lunch, tour Dali Ancient Town.

(The Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple are a royal monastery built during the Nanzhao Kingdom and Dali Kingdom periods, with a history of over 1,000 years. Facing Erhai Lake to the east and backed by Yinglo Peak of Cangshan Mountain to the west, the scenery is very beautiful.)

In the afternoon, take a Jeep tour around Erhai Lake. After the itinerary, have dinner and check into the hotel.

Day 4: Tea Horse Culture Corridor + Yulong Snow Mountain + Lijiang Golden Sands Show + Lijiang Ancient Town.

After breakfast, head to (the middle section of Diequan Road in Zhoucheng) to visit the Tea Horse Culture Corridor.

After lunch, go to the Yulong Snow Mountain scenic area, take the big cable car up the mountain to enjoy the beautiful scenery, and visit Blue Moon Valley at the foot.

(Take the big cable car to Glacier Park at 4,506 meters above sea level, experience the unique scenery of snow-capped glaciers, visit Ganhaizi Meadow, and take an electric cart (at own expense) around the Baishui River to Blue Moon Valley, admiring the natural snow lake formed by melting snow from Yulong Snow Mountain.)

In the evening, enjoy a complimentary 'Lijiang Golden Sands' performance, then stroll through Lijiang Ancient Town's Sifang Street at night. After the itinerary, check into the hotel.

(Created by one of the nation's top ten cultural growth enterprises and winner of a national cultural performance gold award; in the form of dance poetry and painting, it brings together the cultural phenomena born from Lijiang's extraordinary landscapes and ancient, unparalleled cultural treasures, comprehensively showcasing Lijiang's unique and profound ethnic culture and spirit. It's not just a show displaying minority customs, but also a spiritual journey, away from the bustling city, to feel these primitive sounds.)

Day 5: Shuhe Ancient Town + Lashi Lake.

After breakfast, depart for Shuhe Ancient Town to experience the charming beauty of this oldest town, then go to Lashi Lake Park and walk along the ancient Tea Horse Road to the source of Lashi Lake.

After lunch, drive back to Kunming, with stop for meals en route, and upon arrival, check into a hotel in Kunming.

Day 6: Return home.

I really enjoyed this Yunnan trip. My sincere thanks to independent travel planner Asima for the warm service and thoughtful arrangements. If you want to travel to Yunnan worry-free and on a budget, you can contact them.

The above is the 6-day Yunnan itinerary arranged by Asima. The entire trip covered all the essential scenic spots of Yunnan, giving us a wonderful recent experience. Most importantly, Asima and her team are very familiar with Yunnan and didn't lead us astray, saving us more than half of our expected expenses. Asima was very enthusiastic and answered all our questions. Leave professional matters to professionals—it's much more worry-free than wandering around on your own.
