Warm Winter Sunshine: Explore Yunnan on a Budget of Around 1,000 RMB – Avoid Pitfalls and Enjoy a Carefree Journey through Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang
Youth is not a paintbrush, but the paint itself – freely splashed with abandon, a masterpiece of its own. Don't let your youth go to waste: embark on a Yunnan journey. By the shores of Dianchi Lake, watch the seagulls that fly all the way from Siberia. Take in Dali's Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake, the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, Dali Ancient Town, an Erhai Lake cruise, Dali's Ideal State. Then experience Lijiang's Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Lijiang Ancient Town, and Shuhe Ancient Town. The weather is clear and perfect for travel.
Preparations before departure:
Sun protection: wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.
Clothing: We recommend bringing mainly autumn clothes, plus a warm jacket. Current temperatures in Yunnan range from 15 to 23 degrees Celsius, with a big difference between morning and evening. Choose simple, warm-colored outfits – they'll look great in photos.
Others: It's a good idea to pack stomach medicine, cold medicine, and other common medications, as many people struggle to adjust to the weather changes. Regarding the health code: If you're from a low-risk area, have your green health code and green itinerary code ready, and take a nucleic acid test upon arrival in Kunming.
Day 1: From your hometown to Kunming Changshui Airport → Check into your hotel in Kunming. If you arrive early, go try some Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles.
Day 2: After breakfast at your Kunming hotel → Dianchi Lake Dam → Chama Flower Street → Western Hills → Chuxiong
After breakfast, head to the Dianchi Haigeng Dam to admire the beautiful 'Pearl of the Plateau,' Dianchi Lake, and gaze at the Western Hills, known as the 'Sleeping Beauty Mountain' for its resemblance to a reclining maiden.
Next, visit the trendy hotspot Chama Flower Street, where you'll find a mouthwatering array of local delicacies: the most authentic douhua rice noodles, all kinds of barbecued treats, red sugar cakes, live music, coffee, and Western fare. Lunch today is yours to choose freely.
In the afternoon, gather to explore Kunming's scenic historic mountain, Xishan Forest Park. Xishan sits beside Dianchi Lake, appearing from afar like a graceful beauty lying on the water's surface, hence the name 'Sleeping Beauty Mountain.' The tour includes a cable car ride with open-air viewing – with the mountain beneath your feet and breathtaking scenery all around. As you walk, don't forget to look down over Kunming city and the emerald-green, misty vastness of Dianchi Lake. After the tour, drive to Chuxiong. For dinner, enjoy a banquet accompanied by ethnic song and dance performances – a double feast for the eyes and palate, showcasing the fiery passion of the Yi people. Then check into your hotel.
Day 3: After breakfast in Chuxiong → Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple → Private Erhai Lake Cruise → Visit the Santorini-style Ideal State (photos)
After breakfast, drive to visit the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, a symbol of Dali as a 'region of great cultural heritage,' an emblem of ancient Yunnan history and culture, and one of the oldest and grandest architectural structures in southern China.
For lunch, enjoy Dali's specialty spicy-sour fish. Then board a private Erhai Lake cruise for an up-close encounter with Erhai. Take in the natural beauty of Cangshan and Erhai, and see the 'Golden Shuttle Clouds and Mist' – a scene so enchanting you'll be delighted, relaxed, and reluctant to leave.
'Facing the sea, with spring blossoms' is many people's ideal life. For those used to the fast pace of big cities, a trip to Dali is the perfect escape. We've specially arranged a stop at Dali's most popular Douyin-famous spot, known as China's Santorini: the Santorini-style Ideal State (each family receives 5 complimentary digital photos). Romance begins here, with dreamy blue and pure white, a gentleness as hazy as the wind and clouds. (Bring your most beautiful, stylish outfits!) Every random snap here is a masterpiece. The blue sky is as romantic as if it had been washed and dried. In the evening, we've carefully selected a fresh and charming lakeside hotel in Dali, where sweet dreams will accompany you.
Day 4: Dali Ancient Town → Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Big Cable Car) → Blue Moon Valley → Lijiang Ancient Town
After breakfast, drive to visit Dali Ancient Town (open, free-roaming ancient town). Also known as Yeyu City, Purple City, and Zhonghe Town, its history dates back to the Tang Dynasty's Tianbao era when King Geluofeng of Nanzhao built Yangjumeie City (near today's Three Pagodas to the west) as his new capital.
For lunch, enjoy a nutritious packed meal (1 bottle of water, 1 bag of milk, 1 marinated egg, 1 sausage, 1 pack of wafers, 2 French-style soft buns, 1 chocolate pie, 1 egg yolk pie, 1 large bread roll, 1 apple). Then drive to the 5A-rated Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area. Before departure, choose either Route A (Spruce Meadow Cable Car) or Route B (Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Big Cable Car) according to your physical condition.
Route A: Take the Spruce Meadow Cable Car to explore the legendary 'Third Kingdom of Jade Dragon,' enjoy the mountain's layered beauty, and stroll through alpine meadows and primeval forests, immersing yourself in pure nature.
Route B: Starting from a meadow at 3,000 meters, travel through towering pines and firs to reach the Glacier Park at 4,506 meters and admire the magnificent scenery bestowed by nature.
Then visit White Water River and Blue Moon Valley, often called 'Little Jiuzhaigou of Yunnan.'
In the evening, explore the ancient Lijiang Ancient Town and Square Street, built along three hills and renowned for its 'soft time' reputation.
In the lanes and alleys, both young and old savor a leisurely, slow-paced life. No matter how beautiful the scenery, it takes the right mood and leisure to truly feel at ease. (Lijiang Ancient Town is an open ancient town, best explored on your own, with time at your discretion.)
Day 5: Shuhe Ancient Town → Baisha Ancient Town → Erhai Viewing Platform → Kunming
After breakfast, drive to visit Shuhe Ancient Town, an important part of Lijiang's World Cultural Heritage site and a historical hub along the Tea Horse Road (open ancient town, free exploration).
Then drive to Baisha Ancient Town, another part of Lijiang that retains the most authentic Naxi heritage and is the most traditional Naxi village. Here, you'll find the same small bridges over flowing streams, the same achingly blue sky, and the same warm sunshine as in Lijiang Ancient Town, but with an added tranquility that Lijiang lacks. For millennia, the Naxi people have kept their traditional work and lifestyle... it's utterly charming. After these days of idyllic daydreaming in Lijiang,
continue to the Erhai Viewing Platform, the best spot to fully appreciate Erhai's beauty. Gaze over Yugi Island and Little Golden Shuttle Island, like a pair of mandarin ducks floating on Erhai, and soak in the relaxed fishing village life. Dali is a perfect destination for solo travel: just zone out watching Erhai and Cangshan, or the ever-changing clouds, enjoying your own company and a beautiful moment... Then drive back to Kunming, where you'll check into your hotel.
Day 6: Transfer to the airport according to your flight. Tips for traveling in Yunnan:
1. There's a significant temperature difference between morning and evening (10–24°C). Dress appropriately to avoid catching a cold.
2. Respect local customs and culture. Yunnan is home to many ethnic minorities with different lifestyles and traditions. As a visitor, please be courteous and civilized.
3. The altitude at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is high. Rest well to prevent altitude sickness.
4. Yunnan's mountainous terrain can bring rain in summer, so bring rain gear.
5. The UV rays in Kunming are extremely strong. Ladies who care about their skin must bring sunscreen, apply it to all exposed skin, wear sunglasses, and even a disposable thin mask. Be sure to wear a spring jacket. Kunming's weather is spring-like year-round, but don't be tempted to wear short sleeves for coolness – or you'll end up with a very noticeable tan line on your arms. As we know, a year's whitening efforts can be undone by just a few hours in the sun.
6. Pay attention to your stamina in high-altitude areas, as thinner air can cause hypoxia. Be mindful of your physical condition to avoid altitude sickness!
