Hukou Waterfall: One of the Eight Great Wonders - Did You Know?
Hukou Waterfall is turbulent with thundering waves and magnificent scenery. It is the most spectacular section of the Yellow River and a rare waterfall wonder both domestically and internationally. The Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area is located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, in the middle of the Jin-Shaan Grand Canyon, covering an area of about 60 square kilometers. It is a famous scenic area shared by Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces. Here, the river is flanked by steep cliffs on both sides, and the river mouth narrows like the spout of a teapot, hence the name Hukou Waterfall.
Between Shanxi and Shaanxi, it is separated by Hukou. Hukou Waterfall is born in this spout. Before the waterfall, the Yellow River's riverbed is several thousand meters wide, but here the rocks on both sides suddenly contract, forming a narrow trough that is tens of thousands of meters long. Moreover, a steep deep valley is formed below the trough. Thus, the vast incoming water converges into a single stream and rushes into the canyon, with a momentum like mountains crumbling and earth splitting. Hukou Waterfall is the second largest waterfall in China after Huangguoshu Waterfall in Guizhou, and it is also the largest yellow waterfall in the world. To truly experience its magnificence, one must be there in person. Hukou Waterfall is the background pattern on the back of the fourth series of 50-yuan RMB notes. Blackie Ko also drove a sports car over the Yellow River here.
