Feel the Yellow River, Experience Hukou

From afar, I heard the Yellow River roaring and thundering! I had once admired the majestic posture of the Yellow River from the train traveling from Fenglingdu to Xi'an. The broad, turbid, and slow-moving waters, with the brilliant red of the morning sun scattered across the surface, shimmered with a warm and intoxicating glow. Paired with the rising mountains on both banks, it ignited a beautiful longing and an impulsive surge of vitality within me. And this time, I was truly going to have an intimate encounter and feel it firsthand—how could my heart not be a little excited?!!!

From afar, I heard the Yellow River roaring and thundering. And now, it was right before my eyes, within arm's reach. As the mother river that nurtured the evolution and development of Chinese civilization, who wouldn't yearn to throw themselves into her affectionate embrace, to breathe in her refreshing scent, and to feel her magnanimous existence? For the first time in my life, I touched the Yellow River, and for the first time, I saw a waterfall—and it was a waterfall of the Yellow River! The majestic, muddy waves churning to the sky, the roaring and howling like a dragon's chant and tiger's roar, indeed left a significant impact on the viewer, evoking involuntary reverence and feelings of admiration and love. Looking out from the upper edge of the waterfall, the broad waters flowed between the winding, deep, and secluded mountains on both sides, truly giving a sense of "the Yellow River's waters coming from the heavens." The surface of the water reflected the warm yellow light of the morning sun, glistening and sparkling, making one feel as if they had fallen into a dreamlike painting, ethereal and distant, yet not lacking in reality.

Hukou Waterfall is located 50 kilometers east of Yichuan County, Yan'an, and shares the Yellow River as a border with the neighboring Ji County of Shanxi. It is the second largest waterfall in China, after Huangguoshu Waterfall in Guizhou, but it possesses the most majestic and magnificent momentum. It was also the pattern on the 50-yuan banknote we used to use. The waterfall is divided into several streams, both large and small. The entire waterfall group is flanked by mountains on both sides, converging into a deep ditch about 40 meters wide, 40 meters deep, and nearly 5,000 meters long, known as the "Ten-Li Dragon Trough." The first waterfall, also the main waterfall, seems to pour downward into a pot mouth. The originally broad and mighty river, nearly 500 meters wide, rolls in like thousands of troops and horses, but suddenly constricts here, becoming exceptionally narrow—only about 30 meters wide. All the water plummets down through this narrow opening, naturally creating a spectacular momentum and sound. This is also the most spectacular sight in northern Shaanxi. The entire waterfall is shrouded in a thick layer of mist, covering the entire cascading water like a gauze veil hiding a shy maiden's modest body, while the rolling, surging, and turbulent water below sends chills down one's spine. It is both beautiful and dignified—this is the Yellow River!

If the sun is shining brightly, in front of several rushing and majestic waterfalls, bright and colorful rainbows will surely appear, extremely beautiful. Like a gorgeous ribbon tied around the outer edge of a gauze veil, it adds a touch of charming elegance to the grandeur of the Yellow River, imbuing it with spirituality.

The plunging waters of the Yellow River rush away rapidly within the seemingly ravined riverbed. The rolling, muddy yellow waters violently strike the brownish-red rocks on both sides, splashing pieces of mud, churning up foam, and creating swirling eddies. The roaring sound of the waves is thunderous (audible from several miles away). The thrilling and imposing momentum, the majestic and awe-inspiring sound, all deeply penetrate the viewer's heart and mind, causing the blood in one's veins to surge and ebb, naturally evoking awe. The Yellow River embodies the masculinity and fortitude of Chinese sons, and also contains the softness and beauty of Chinese daughters—how can one not sigh in admiration: What a mother river, what a grand picture of China!

As the second largest waterfall in China, the Yellow River Hukou Waterfall (the largest is Huangguoshu Waterfall in Guizhou) is the largest yellow waterfall in the world. Hukou Waterfall is a national scenic area and a national AAAA-level tourist attraction. It borders Hukou Township, Yichuan County, Yan'an City, Shaanxi Province to the west, and Hukou Town, Ji County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province to the east, making it a scenic area shared by the two provinces. Due to its unique geological formations, many peculiar landscapes have formed here. The main eight wonders include: Smoke Rising from the Water, Boats Moving on Dry Land, Rainbow Playing with Water, Mountains Flying and Seas Standing, Rain Showering in Clear Skies, Thunder in a Dry Sky, Ice Peaks Hanging Upside Down, and the Ten-Li Dragon Trough.

As descendants of China, one who hasn't been to the Great Wall is not a true man, and one who hasn't seen Hukou is not a hero. The Yellow River Hukou Waterfall is worth a visit in a lifetime.

Many schools and groups come here for sketching and creative work.
