Red Cities
Huining has a history of over 2,100 years as a county. In 1997, it was named a provincial-level historical and cultural city by the Gansu Provincial Government.
There are 2 national key cultural relic protection units, 8 provincial-level protection units, 10 city-level protection units, and 441 county-level cultural relic sites.
Huining's red sacred tour, rural leisure tour, educational inspection tour, and historical cultural tour have gradually resumed in an orderly manner after the epidemic.
In October 1936, the First, Second, and Fourth Front Armies of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army successfully joined forces in the Huining area, marking the victory of the Long March, a forward position for national resistance, a model of great unity of revolutionary forces, and a turning point for the Chinese revolution towards victory.
Of course, Huining paper-cutting, Huining shadow puppetry, Huining embroidery, and Huining folk songs are also good folk experiences.
Yan'an is located in the northern part of Shaanxi Province, in the south-central part of the Loess Plateau. It is known as the 'Throat of the Frontier' and 'Military Strategic Town,' reputed as 'the key to the three Qins and the throat of five routes.'
Yan'an is one of the birthplaces of the 5,000-year civilization of the Chinese nation. Thousands of years of historical and cultural accumulation have nurtured the rich and honest Loess Plateau culture. The bold and unrestrained Yan'an waist drum, the high-pitched and passionate northern Shaanxi folk songs, the simple and exquisite folk paper-cutting, and the warm and lively northern Shaanxi big yangge dance all embody the Yan'an people's hope for a better life.
Recommendation 1: Baota Mountain
Baota Mountain, located in the center of Yan'an city, is named after the pagoda built on it. The pagoda was originally built in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty. Baota Mountain is an important symbol and icon of Yan'an, the revolutionary sacred place of China, and a must-visit place when touring Yan'an. 'In dreams I return to Yan'an time and again, holding the Baota Mountain with both arms' is a famous line by poet He Jingzhi, warmly praising the sacred status of Baota Mountain in the hearts of the Chinese people.
At the foot of Baota Mountain, there are many historical relics and modern revolutionary relics. Among the cliff carvings from various dynasties, the most famous are Fan Zhongyan's clerical script inscriptions of 'Jialing Mountain' and 'Having a hundred thousand troops in the chest' from the Song Dynasty. Climbing to the top of the pagoda, you can see the panoramic view of Yan'an city.
Recommendation 2: Zaoyuan Revolutionary Site
Zaoyuan Revolutionary Site is located about 8 kilometers northwest of Yan'an city. It was the location of the Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of China from October 1943 to March 1947. Zaoyuan, also known as Yanyuan, covers an area of more than 540,000 square meters. The garden is lush with trees, green grass, and blooming flowers, with former residences of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, and others, as well as a central auditorium.
Recommendation 3: Yan'an Revolutionary Memorial Hall
Yan'an Revolutionary Memorial Hall is located on the east bank of the Yan River, northwest of Baota District, Yan'an City, west of the Wangjiaping site. It is a large-scale revolutionary history memorial hall. The hall displays a large number of precious historical documents, charts, and photos, systematically reflecting the glorious journey from October 1935 to March 1948, including the establishment of the Anti-Japanese National United Front, the Great Production Movement, the Rectification Movement, and the convening of the Seventh National Congress of the Party, culminating in the victory of the Liberation War after the Central Red Army arrived in northern Shaanxi.
Recommendation 4: Yangjialing Revolutionary Site
Yangjialing Revolutionary Site was the longest residence of Chairman Mao and other senior central leaders in Yan'an. After the Japanese bombing of Yan'an in 1938, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China moved here and stayed until October 1943. During this period, the Central Committee led and carried out the vigorous Great Production Movement and the famous Yan'an Rectification Movement. Yangjialing Revolutionary Site is divided into two parts: south of the road and north of the road.
South of the road is the former Central Auditorium, and north of the road are the former residences of central leaders such as Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai, and Liu Shaoqi. The auditorium was converted from a Christian church and was the most luxurious building in Yan'an until the 1980s.
Recommendation 5: Nanniwan
Nanniwan is the birthplace of the Chinese Communist Party's military reclamation cause and the birthplace of the Nanniwan spirit. Nanniwan offers visitors a view of the large terraced fields reclaimed at that time, the Nanniwan Great Production Movement Exhibition Hall, the former residence of Comrade Mao Zedong during his inspection of Nanniwan, the Nine Dragon Spring, and the Martyrs' Monument.
Among them, the Nanniwan Great Production Movement Exhibition Hall introduces the process of the Nanniwan Great Production Movement in detail through physical objects and pictures.
The Lazikou Battle refers to the battle on September 13, 1935, when the Shaanxi-Gansu Detachment of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army (reorganized from the 1st and 3rd Corps of the Red First Front Army and the Central Military Commission column) set off from the Ejie area of Gansu Province to continue the Long March northward. On the 16th, the vanguard Red 4th Regiment, while advancing, defeated the blocking by the 6th Regiment of the Kuomintang's New 14th Division, and approached the important pass Lazikou in southern Gansu Province that afternoon.
The Red 4th Regiment captured Lazikou, opening a passage for the Red Army's Shaanxi-Gansu Detachment to move north.
Lazikou is an important pass in the Minshan Mountains and the gateway from northwestern Sichuan to southern Gansu.
'Descending like divine soldiers at Lazikou, using hundred-zhang cliffs as ladders,' the Red Army's capture of Lazikou became a classic example of winning by surprise and overcoming strength with weakness during the Long March.
