Henan Girl Travels Thousands of Miles to Remove a Lovers' Lock, Only to Find It at the Summit of Central Plains, Where Sunrises and Seas of Clouds Are Stunning
A while ago, a short video became very popular online, telling the story of a Henan girl who, after breaking up with her boyfriend of three years, took a hacksaw and a hammer and traveled thousands of miles to a scenic spot in Luoyang to saw off their evidence of vows—a lovers' lock. Many netizens commented that the Henan girl has character, decisive and able to let go, discarding the past to start anew.
The video went viral, shared by many websites and self-media. The image of the girl standing on the mountaintop sawing off the lock was particularly striking. Meanwhile, many people were also asking: That place looks so beautiful—where is it?
Regarding the location, I, like many friends, probably didn't pay much attention at the time. It wasn't until recently, when Yu Fan visited Luoyang, woke up at 3 a.m., and climbed over 3,400 steps to Yuhuangding to capture the sunrise, that a friend told us that the spot where the girl sawed off the lock was actually Yuhuangding in Baiyun Mountain, Luoyang.
The spot where the girl sawed off the lock is exactly where the friend in the photo was standing. The entire viewing platform on Yuhuangding was densely covered with lovers' locks hanging on the surrounding railings. Behind each lock lies a beautiful wish and a happy story, though whether they ended well is unknown.
Yuhuangding is a famous attraction of Baiyun Mountain, a National AAAAA-level tourist attraction in Luoyang. It is the highest point of the entire scenic area, with an altitude of 2,216 meters. It is said to be the main peak and highest point of the entire Funiu Mountain range, earning the reputation of the Central Plains Summit (a boulder on Yuhuangding bears the inscription 'Central Plains Summit' and the altitude).
If Baiyun Mountain is a landmark of Luoyang, then Yuhuangding is the landmark of Baiyun Mountain. It is one of the favorite Henan spots for photography enthusiasts. On a good day, you can capture beautiful sunrises, sunsets, and seas of clouds here.
At the top, there is a viewing platform of several hundred square meters, surrounded by stone railings with iron locks attached. In the center stands a resplendent hall with carved beams and painted rafters, its four corners upturned. On the south side, the words 'Golden Hall' are inscribed. Inside, statues of the Jade Emperor and the Four Heavenly Kings, all clad in gold, stand solemn and majestic. Some say they are gilded, others say they are solid gold—the truth is unknown.
A friend said, 'This is truly a place full of celestial charm, so beautiful.' Leaning on the railing, you can see the autumn colors of layered forests and the rolling Funiu mountains. Couples come here to silently make vows and hang a lovers' lock, which is indeed meaningful. Perhaps years later, if they return, it will evoke many beautiful memories.
