An Impromptu Trip to Macau: So Fun It Was Amazing
After finishing our trip in Zhuhai with friends, we suddenly decided on a whim to visit Macau. After all, we were already at the border of Macau, how could we miss such a great opportunity! We got tested for nucleic acid on the spot, received the report that afternoon, and set off for Macau. We booked the hotel online, thanks to the enthusiastic sharing by netizens who introduced me to some great hotels in Macau, such as The Venetian Macau, The Parisian Macau, Conrad Macau, Sheraton Grand Macau, and St. Regis Macau. Among them, The Venetian Macau had excellent reviews, and its style and facilities perfectly met our requirements, so accommodation was settled like that~
After two days of playing in Zhuhai, our luggage had quite a few trophies and was especially heavy. I must praise the shuttle service of The Venetian Macau; the free bus took us directly to the hotel, saving us a taxi fare!
The weather in Macau was very pleasant, and the scenery around the hotel was nice. Taking a walk outdoors lifted our spirits. The Venetian Macau is a typical European-style building with a large area. It houses thousands of luxury suites with diverse options and great value for money.
Walking through the magnificent lobby, we checked in, and my hand holding the room card trembled slightly with excitement! To enjoy the beautiful night view, we booked a suite on a higher floor—a luxurious royal suite.
The room was clean and spacious. The decoration was elegant with a touch of bohemian chic. The functional areas were well divided, especially the bathroom, which was perfectly designed.
We arrived in Macau around 3 PM, freshened up in the room, and then went out for dinner. After a day of traveling, we felt a bit tired, so a good meal was necessary to replenish our energy! The two of us hopped over to Northern House on the ground floor of the hotel, and the thought of eating all kinds of delicious food made our smiles sneak out~
This Chinese restaurant had a distinctive style with red as the main tone, looking very festive and lively. There were many Chinese elements, and the red lanterns made it feel like the Spring Festival wasn't over yet!
Chinese cuisine is profound; there were specialties from different regions. The crab roe xiaolongbao, with thin skin and rich filling, tasted similar to Shanghai soup dumplings. Haste makes waste, so remember to let it cool a bit before eating it all in one bite.
One characteristic of Northern cuisine is generous portions. The stir-fried lamb with flatbread immediately released the aroma of cumin when served. There were six soft flatbreads, paired with flavorful lamb, making it increasingly addictive.
Northeast cold skin noodles were mixed by ourselves. The rich sesame paste with a hint of mustard was refreshing and appetizing. The noodles were chewy and bouncy, with an excellent texture!
Lanzhou beef pulled noodles were handmade, with a firm and chewy texture. Large chunks of beef were well-seasoned, and the broth was delicious with just the right amount of saltiness.
Squirrel-shaped fish, shrimp with eggplant and green beans, and Shikumen drunken chicken—three dishes worth ordering. The portions were moderate, just right for two people.
Every time I travel, I like to buy lots of snacks from local supermarkets, bring them back to the hotel, and enjoy them while watching shows. After dinner, we strolled to Marks & Spencer. They had snacks, drinks, fruits, ready-to-eat meals, and more—a wide variety.
My friend loves potato chips, so I grabbed a few extra packs. In the evening, we could snack and chat comfortably. The supermarket was large; just the snack section took us half an hour to browse.
Seeing many snacks I had never tried before thrilled me. Remembering my 5-year-old niece at home made my hand reach for even more snacks.
No woman visiting Macau can resist the allure of DFA Duty Free Store. It was easy to find, with a large store, comprehensive products, and affordable prices.
The new year had begun, so I had to treat myself to a skincare routine to start the year with a better appearance! Many high-end skincare brands at DFA offered discounts and currency exchange advantages, making the prices truly a steal! When my relatives heard I was in Macau, they asked me to buy on their behalf. Even my mom asked me to get her a few boxes of face masks. Love for beauty knows no age; everyone should remember to fight aging.
DFA also had a wide range of makeup products. You could walk in with a bare face and get a free, elaborate makeup look. There were many big-name brands and plenty of testers. Seeing all those popular lipstick shades, I wished I could take them all. Thankfully, my friend reminded me to stay rational, or the consequences would be unimaginable!
Let me quietly recommend a niche jewelry brand called ARTE Madrid. It was located on the third floor of The Grand Canal Shoppes on Gold Bridge Street. If you spent a certain amount, you could receive a surprise gift or jewelry. Entering the store and seeing these luxurious pieces only strengthened my determination to work harder to make money!
The Grand Canal Shoppes had many affordable luxury and trendy brands, especially clothing stores, too many to count. This H&M was on the third floor of The Grand Canal Shoppes, with multiple discounted styles up to 50% off. The staff told us the promotion was short, so the earlier you buy, the better. Spring was coming, so it was the perfect time to buy some new clothes to match.
I was quite satisfied with my outfit until I saw the staff's recommended pairing—definitely not the same aesthetic level, haha. H&M had many clothing styles and aesthetics, very popular among young consumers.
While shopping, we saw promotional photos for the teamLab SuperNature exhibition and thought it looked interesting, so we booked tickets online. Before visiting teamLab, we wandered around the outdoor area of The Grand Canal Shoppes for a long time, experiencing the charm of the Venice of the Water.
On the way to teamLab SuperNature, we didn't encounter many tourists, and I thought I had gone the wrong way until I saw the entrance, which put me at ease. After verifying the tickets at the front desk, we embarked on a journey to explore beauty with excitement.
The exhibition hall was very dark, requiring self-exploration. It was divided into several rooms. Since it was our first time, we had no experience, so we just followed the tourists ahead. If we needed help, we could ask the staff. After entering the exhibition, time seemed to slow down, and the space and time here were intoxicating.
Let me recommend a few fun exhibits. First was the Valley of Flowers and People: Lost, Immersed and Reborn. The hall and walls were covered with colorful flowers, and if you sniffed carefully, there was a faint floral scent! Another space was filled with floating balloons. Hitting them would change their color and emit sound.
The second restaurant we visited was Lei Garden at Shop 2130, The Grand Canal Shoppes. This restaurant specialized in various Cantonese dishes and dim sum. Dinner service was from 18:00 to 23:00. It's recommended to book a table in advance and check the official website for food discounts.
If you want to eat dim sum, this is the place. Their tea snacks were very authentic—not only beautifully presented but also delicious! The waiter recommended the signature dessert—mango pomelo sago—which was especially thick, with fresh mango chunks and grapefruit; one sip lingered for a long time.
Mini pearl chicken had a rich filling of chicken, salted egg, lean meat, and dried shrimp. The glutinous rice was soft and sticky, with the fragrance of lotus leaves. This pearl salted water dumpling was quite unique; give it a try.
BBQ pork rice noodle roll: the rice noodle skin was very thin, soft to eat, with a balanced flavor. After pouring soy sauce, the texture became much richer.
Crispy tofu: crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. The secret marinated pork ribs were a pickled dish with a slight odor, similar to stinky tofu. Friends with a high sensitivity to smells should choose carefully.
I highly recommend the crispy roasted three-layer pork. The fat-to-lean ratio was perfect, fatty but not greasy. Paired with mustard sauce, one piece at a time was unforgettable.
On the last day, we finally found time to visit the newly opened The Londoner Macau. This new hotel with a British style was indeed magnificent. The shopping center inside the hotel was also decorated with great recognition, featuring many British elements.
Since we were there, we had to eat something. Lady M on the second floor of The Londoner Shopping Center was a cake brand from New York, USA. Perhaps due to the pandemic, there weren't many customers, and the staff didn't seem very busy.
Let me share a tip for exploring new shops: when you don't know what to order, go for the signature items. The coconut mille-crepe with ice cream, rose milk tea, and Earl Grey mille-crepe—order these without worry; they'll be finished completely.
There were many free attractions near The Venetian Macau. If I weren't so lazy, I could have run my legs off! If my friend hadn't suggested visiting the Ruins of St. Paul's, I could have stayed in the hotel eating and drinking all day. Today, the Ruins of St. Paul's were much quieter; in the past, it was packed with people. The advantage of fewer people was that I could take photos without worrying about someone photobombing.
The Ruins of St. Paul's are the remains of the Church of St. Paul. After over 400 years, the sense of vicissitude is palpable. Walking up the hill from the ruins leads to Mount Fortress, which was once used to defend against pirates. Built in 1616, it also has a long history. The view from the fortress was excellent, overlooking the city of Macau—very spectacular!
After returning to the hotel from the Ruins of St. Paul's, we hurriedly packed our luggage to go back to Zhuhai. This three-day free and independent trip greatly improved my mental state. No wonder people say travel can heal the soul. Along the way, taking care of each other with friends, I deeply remembered all the laughter and joy. This was an impromptu trip to Macau, but I was very satisfied with the entire journey. Thank you to the staff of The Venetian Macau for their warm hospitality. Hope to see you again~
