How to Travel in Macau? A Complete Guide to Food, Accommodation, and Transportation

Macau is currently the only outbound destination for Chinese travelers. And recently, I've noticed that hotels in Macau are surprisingly cheap. Why not take this opportunity to get a good deal? Coupled with various preferential policies for tourists from the Macau government, hotel discounts are significant, making the overall cost of a trip to Macau much lower.

The old streets of Macau Peninsula carry the history of Macau.

The brightly colored facades are a major feature of Macau, and the steep slopes test drivers' parking skills.

This time, I departed from Shenzhen, took a 1-hour ferry to Jiuzhou Port in Zhuhai, then continued by boat to Taipa Ferry Terminal in Macau, taking only 25 minutes. 【How to Buy Tickets】 There are many ferries from Shenzhen to Jiuzhou Port, departing every half hour to an hour, costing 130 yuan. It only takes 1 hour, which I find more convenient than taking the high-speed rail.

However, you need to use your Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau to book tickets. The ferry ticket is only 38 yuan, and you'll reach Macau's Taipa Ferry Terminal in 25 minutes.

Don't worry if you're not familiar with the process; the staff at the terminal will patiently assist you. After generating a QR code, you can take a screenshot and use it within the validity period.

Along the way, you'll pass the magnificent Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. It feels like I've saved the cost of a sightseeing boat ticket for the bridge.

25 minutes later, we arrived at Macau's Taipa Ferry Terminal.

【Tips】 At the start of the route, the 'water bus' from Jiuzhou Port to Macau (Taipa) operates from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm, with 10 departures each way daily, totaling 20 trips. During the promotional period from March 1 to April 30, adult/child tickets are only 38 yuan per person (48 MOP per person); a monthly pass is 380 yuan (480 MOP). With a valid ticket for the Jiuzhou Port to Macau (Taipa) route, you can park for free at the Jiuzhou Port Bus Terminal parking lot for 12 hours. During the pandemic, passengers must present a valid nucleic acid test result within 7 days for customs clearance.

This time in Macau, I chose the Wynn Palace Hotel, which is also very close to Taipa Ferry Terminal. After passing customs, it's only a 5-minute taxi ride to the hotel.

Wynn Palace is the second luxury integrated resort in Macau developed by Wynn since the opening of Wynn Macau in 2006. The hotel's theme is flowers, redefining luxury and elegance.

Wynn Palace has 1,706 rooms, and I stayed in the Hermès yellow-themed lake view suite, which is over 100 square meters. It is said that the smallest room type in Wynn Palace is over 60 square meters, larger than many suites in other hotels.

The facilities in the room are very exquisite, with excellent attention to detail, reflecting the royal status of the 'Palace.'

When I returned at night, I saw from the cable car that the pool at Wynn Palace was beautiful.

If you stay at a hotel in Taipa and want to visit attractions, you need to go to Macau Peninsula. The area of Macau is not large, and the peninsula itself is tiny, so most attractions can be visited on foot. From Wynn Palace, you can take the hotel's free shuttle bus to Wynn Macau on the peninsula, then walk to nearby attractions using navigation.

Our first stop was the Ruins of St. Paul's. Along the way, we passed through the old streets of Macau. The streets on the Macau Peninsula are very narrow, and cars drive on one-way streets. Sometimes crossing the street to the other side involves a circuitous route.

There are also many colorful houses along the way, remnants of the Portuguese era.

? Ruins of St. Paul's is a must-visit for everyone in Macau. I remember a friend came recently and said that there were very few tourists at the Ruins of St. Paul's, almost no one. But when we came, that scene was gone, indicating that Macau's tourism has recovered. For the best photo spot of the Ruins of St. Paul's, I always prefer to go higher. Many people like to shoot from below, but it's hard to avoid the crowds. The Mount Fortress on the left side of the Ruins of St. Paul's is a great spot with few people.

Climbing to the top of Mount Fortress, you can almost overlook the entire Macau Peninsula and Zhuhai across the way.

Most buildings in Macau are low-rise, while across the way in Zhuhai, there are many new high-rise buildings.

Old streets of Macau at nightfall.

? Fisherman's Wharf is a building on the seaside of Macau Peninsula that imitates an Italian opera house. It's good for photos, and now there are very few tourists. I walked from the Ruins of St. Paul's, which took 30 minutes.

To return from Macau to Zhuhai, I also left from Macau's Taipa Ferry Terminal. The ferry was at 10:10 am, and there were only three tourists at the terminal—it felt like a private event. Customs clearance was very fast.

Currently, Macau and Hong Kong are not connected by ferry, so only ferries to Zhuhai and Shenzhen are available.

The entire waiting hall was empty.

On the way back, we passed the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge again.

As May Day approaches, I hope my travelogue helps everyone. If you want to travel to Macau soon, you can refer to my itinerary. Of course, the most important thing is to apply for the travel permit, endorsement, and get a nucleic acid test report in advance. Finally, I wish everyone a pleasant holiday in Macau.
