Two-Way No Quarantine | A Guide to Scoring Michelin Restaurants and Luxury Hotels in Macau (Part 1)

June 2021: Returned from Macau, stuffed.

Buy-one-get-one-free flights,

Luxury hotel suites over 100 sqm starting at 1,500 RMB,

And real Michelin restaurants at mainland prices...

Are you sure you don't want to take advantage of these deals in Macau?

Under the blue sky, Macau, with its Chinese foundation, carries the oceanic genes of the turbulent modern world history.

Rain and clouds come and go here, just like the foreign cultures and people who have been landing in Macau for centuries, then leaving fully loaded. Monsoon rains fall from high places into narrow streets and ditches, while those distant civilizations and lifestyles have slowly merged with Chinese and Lingnan culture over hundreds of years, finally blossoming into a unique flower—since the Ming and Qing dynasties, Macau has transformed and risen through maritime trade, gradually becoming a world-renowned paradise for consumption and entertainment.

Amid the pandemic, overseas travel seems distant, but Macau is an exception.

Thanks to strict and effective prevention measures, since early August last year, Macau and the mainland have implemented two-way no quarantine (detailed guide at the end). You only need a valid nucleic acid test report and health code to enter and exit—very safe and convenient. For someone like me, who has been locked down and gone crazy, it's like going once a month.

Of course, traveling to Macau, you can pay directly with WeChat or Alipay, not only skipping queues but also enjoying deals like buy-one-get-one-free flights, luxury hotel suites, and shopping discounts. Honestly, choosing a hotel each time is enough for 20 trips. This time I stayed in Macau for 7 days. For the first 4 days, I chose the Wynn Macau - Wanli Luxury Suite (102 sqm) and Wynn Palace Lake View Suite (107 sqm), averaging 1,500 RMB per night. In our internet-famous Chongqing, can you imagine paying this price for such luxurious suites? Is this something you could even think about in normal times?

Not to mention that Forbes Five-Star and Michelin restaurants like Wynn Steakhouse (2 Michelin stars), Wynn Palace (2 stars), Wynn's Chinese restaurants like Wynn Kitchen, Wynn Palace, Jing Hua Xuan, and Mizumi (Japanese) used to require advance reservations and long queues.

Now, everything is imaginable.

It can be said that now is the best time to travel to Macau, the pearl of the sea and sky.

Hotels—Sleep in New Luxury

01. Wynn Macau: Luxury is Not an Illusion

Macau is the most concentrated place for luxury hotels in the world, with a cluster of hotels that exude an aura of swallowing the universe.

On the day I checked into Wynn Macau, it was dusk, full of wind and the setting sun.

The suite's space division is excellent, luxuriously astonishing. A room is enough for a family to have fun. The bathroom has separate wet and dry areas, the walk-in closet is very thoughtful, and the living room is divided into a work area and a reception area.

Taking advantage of the sunset, I opened a bottle of red wine and stood by the window. The smell of fireworks from Hengqin drifted over. Fishermen heading out to sea began to cross the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Seagulls skimmed over the water. Air Macau planes flying to and from various mainland cities streaked across the sky. The afterglow of the sunset prepared a melody on the Wynn Macau building, slanting into the city's corners...

Stepping out of the room and savoring carefully, you'll find that Wynn Macau is not just a hotel but also an art museum. From the small ornaments on the corridor walls to the various artworks in the public areas, from paintings to tapestries, from classical to modern art, it quietly showcases its luxury.

The Tree of Prosperity show at Wynn Macau is a work that many people make a special trip to see.

The entire performance can be described as "the sky opens the curtain, and all things shine." When not performing, the Tree of Prosperity is hidden under a hemispherical relief with the theme of the twelve zodiac signs. Over a dozen meters high, the golden dome is decorated with the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. When the show begins, the dome slowly opens with music, as if there is thunder. Looking up, fantastic and colorful images keep changing.

Below, the relief hemisphere seems to be summoned by the heavens, slowly opening with steaming mist. The giant tree of prosperity slowly rises with sound, light, and electricity. Golden leaves tremble, rustling—all the leaves are made of 24K pure gold and brass sheets, swaying and transforming between heaven and earth.

Green for spring, red for summer, gold for autumn, silver-white for winter. Under everyone's gaze, the tree rises high, completing the four seasons. The spectacle is extremely magnificent. Apart from admiration, many people come specifically to seek good luck.

After eating, drinking, and wandering around, I returned to the room and collapsed under the caress of the 507-thread-count bedding, having sweet dreams without waking.

The next morning, a continental breakfast delivered to the room started my heart for loving this broken and muddy world again.

02. Wynn Palace: Elegant Flowers and Art Spaces

In 2016, Wynn Group invested over 4 billion US dollars to build "Wynn Palace," which exceeds "Wynn Macau" in scale and is renowned for its luxury, humanistic spirit, and meticulous service.

It is said that some people have been so immersed in its art, cuisine, entertainment, shopping, and various wonderful services that they couldn't leave this ultra-luxurious "palace" for five days and four nights! From time to time, masterpieces by artists like Liao Yibai are displayed.

Reliable sources also say that Wynn never chooses suppliers based on low bids; they only select the best materials.

For example, Wynn Palace gathers artworks from around the world, embodying humanism and luxury. Most famous is this masterpiece blending Chinese and Western culture: the four-piece rare "Chinese Qing Dynasty Ceramic Vases - Duke of Buccleuch Vases," worth 20 million US dollars. Only two sets exist in the world—one in Buckingham Palace in London, and the other genuine set is displayed in the hallway for visitors to admire.

Wynn Palace is famous for its floral themes. At the North and South Garden Lobbies, under the high golden dome, tens of thousands of flowers form windmills, hot air balloons, or cartoon characters, combined with mechanical devices to dynamically display the brilliance of flowers for travelers to stop and enjoy.

The floral theme introduces a new theme every six weeks, bringing surprises—when I went, the South Lobby had a floral installation themed "Monkeys on a Seesaw," made from over 45,000 flowers. Six vividly crafted monkeys in costumes, climbing or doing handstands, lifelike, creating a lively carnival atmosphere.

At the North Lobby, fairy-tale beauty extends with the slow rise and fall of "Colorful Hot Air Balloons." The entire installation is made from over 90,000 flowers, including white crystal chrysanthemums, roses, hydrangeas, carnations, and dahlia. Your mood also floats away with the hot air balloon.

Undoubtedly, Wynn has a dedicated floral design team, from design to execution, determining the flowers used and replacement times based on the theme.

We casually did a rough calculation: just the floral decoration alone costs over nine figures annually—walking in this flower-themed palace, brilliance and elegance fly together. Golden light shines on your facial contours, dreams surge, and for a moment, you wouldn't doubt that you truly have a noble identity.

03. Hermès Suite: A Summer Dream into Prosperity

In the land of gold, Wynn Palace has 1,706 elegant and luxurious rooms, suites, and villas, with the largest suites over 180 sqm, unparalleled in Macau.

Charming rooms are always the protagonist of the hotel.

This time, I stayed in the "Hermès" suite decorated with Hermès orange.

Entering the room, the smart system automatically pulls the curtains open. Golden sunlight instantly penetrates through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows, slanting in and spreading over the carpet. The whole room is bathed in golden light, with tables, chairs, and carpets shimmering with fantastic and delicate light, creating a warm and luxurious atmosphere.

Standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, the swimming pool below, the silver water jets from the performance lake, the cable cars moving slowly in the air, and the unobstructed high-rise buildings in the distance, all construct the visible prosperity and excitement.

In details, Wynn's exclusive comfortable beds and bedding, specially formulated bath amenities, Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth sound system, interactive touch control panels, and complimentary high-speed broadband internet provide meticulous care. Especially the interactive touch control system for lighting, curtains, air conditioning, TV, etc., all can be operated with one touch, extremely convenient.

Every evening, the hotel offers turndown service. Besides warm handwritten cards, the attendant also places chocolates and water on the nightstand, with fresh fruits like blueberries and mulberries, lifting your spirits.

In the hotel paved with flowers, feeling the 600-thread-count bedding's gentle touch, the breakfast delivered to the room is enough to make you forever indulge in Wynn's space—fill out the breakfast menu the night before and hang it on the door; the next morning, the luxurious breakfast arrives as promised, carefully placed by the floor-to-ceiling window or at your designated spot.

With a touch of the newborn morning sun, I couldn't help but enjoy another beautiful and warm day.

Cuisine—Eat at a New Level

Among the resorts awarded Forbes Five-Star, Wynn Palace received five-star awards in multiple categories including hotel, spa, and restaurants.

01. Wynn Steakhouse: Eating to Feel Life is Worth It

As a 2020-2021 Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star restaurant and the 2019 Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, Wynn Steakhouse is a must-visit for many people in Macau.

The coveted French oysters, razor clams, scallops, Maine lobster, Alaskan king crab legs, jumbo prawns, shellfish, and daily fresh catches, as well as top-grade steaks from the US, Australia, and Japan, are prepared with the simplest cooking, touching you deeply from the first bite.

The dishes are impeccable.

The appetizer of French blue lobster, oysters, Alaskan king crab, and jumbo prawns makes a strong start; the Snake River Farm gold wagyu and Angus 30/70 fat-to-lean ribeye, the New South Wales Ranger Valley Farm dry-aged T-bone steak, and bone marrow paired with bourbon whiskey and grilled butter buns create a mouthful of happiness;

The Hokkaido scallops (half a tael each) with oil-cured tomatoes and chives feel spring-like; the SW Tahitian vanilla Baked Alaska ice cream has just the right sweetness, beautiful and delicious; citrus-marinated scallops... only connoisseurs can tell their preciousness and subtle differences. With this kind of feeding, I am willing to exchange weight for it.

Famous for its wine, Wynn Steakhouse has dedicated sommeliers to pair different wines with different dishes.

I particularly remember a Grüner Veltliner from Hungary's Kamptal region, with distinct minerality and tropical fruit notes like citrus and pineapple, perfectly paired with scallops and bone marrow.

The acidity of the wine enhances the scallops' freshness and cuts through the richness of the bone marrow, cleansing the palate.

The 36-day dry-aged T-bone steak has an unforgettable texture—balanced fat, tender meat, paired with a 2016 Black Station from Napa Valley, California, like a symphony in the mouth—oak-aged, with vanilla aromas and fresh blackberry and blackcurrant flavors, medium-bodied with soft tannins.

The dim golden lighting inside the steakhouse creates a very elegant dining environment, and every 30 minutes, a 4D show created by a Hollywood team accompanies the meal. The stunning and vivid performances construct a feeling that "heaven on earth is truly worth praising."

Average spending: 1,000 MOP and up

Opening hours: Thursday to Sunday, 5:30 PM to 11 PM

02. Wynn Palace: Enjoyment and the Difficulty of Losing Weight with Every Dish

Cantonese cuisine is Wynn Group's strong suit in Macau. Besides being a Michelin one-star restaurant, Wynn Palace has been listed among "Asia's 50 Best Restaurants" for three consecutive years and is also a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star restaurant.

Its award-winning Chinese culinary team meticulously prepares dishes paired with up to 40 types of fine teas personally selected by Wynn Palace's tea masters, creating an unforgettable authentic Cantonese dining experience.

Essentially, if you want authentic Cantonese food in Macau, Wynn Palace and Wynn Kitchen are enough.

The overall décor uses gold and jade tones, luxurious and high-end. The space is grand and well-arranged, with every seat offering a view of the outdoor performance lake's entertainment.

The appetizer is roasted Iberian black pork. The golden fortune tea paired with selected dim sum starts the culinary journey well, especially the crispy suckling pig with black caviar that awakens multiple taste buds.

French black caviar garnishes the shrimp filling with sesame, crispy outside and tender inside, with rich layers; Japanese pasteurized eggs with milk as base, French blue lobster with black caviar, preserving the ingredients' freshness to the maximum;

Alaskan crab meat is used in several main dishes, finely handled with good chewiness; the spicy and sour seafood soup uses Shanxi black vinegar, Zhejiang red vinegar, and Italian fruit vinegar for mixed seasoning;

The 20-year aged Hua Diao steamed lobster with egg white is perfectly paired with Taiwan high mountain field oolong tea. The freshness of seafood blends with the aroma and sweetness of high-mountain oolong, refreshing the palate;

Alaskan crab meat and half-tael scallops are paired with spring-limited bamboo shoots and wood ear mushrooms, with a spicy, sour, and fragrant taste that makes life worth it; the premium black truffle roast goose uses one of Guangdong's four famous geese, smoked with lychee wood, paired with French black truffle, with generous portions.

The premium roast goose rice with seasonal vegetables, one of Chef Tam's signature dishes, is a must-order staple. The rich goose flavor soaks into each grain of rice; the coconut milk egg white chilled with bird's nest uses generous Indonesian premium bird's nest, with 2/3 of the nest mixed with coconut milk and egg white, crystal clear and appealing, with sugar controlled well, ending the meal sweetly and wonderfully...

This is enjoyment with every meal,

And the difficulty of losing weight every day.

Average spending: 800 MOP and up

Opening hours: Lunch 12 PM to 3 PM, Dinner 6 PM to 10 PM

03. Wynn Kitchen: The Original Internet-Famous Dragon with 90,000 Crystals

The dragon climbing on the wall, inlaid with 90,000 Swarovski crystals, is one of Wynn Kitchen's trademarks—if you want to create an internet-famous spot, others should learn from them.

The restaurant has consecutively won Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star from 2014 to 2021 and is a Michelin two-star restaurant. The dining experience brings double shocks to vision and taste.

At Wynn Kitchen, I highly recommend the cumin roasted lamb rack, crispy suckling pig with black caviar, pear and papaya almond chicken soup, jumbo scallops, and maple syrup black pork barbecue. These delicacies make you feast heartily, and pairing them with Wynn's private tea and refreshing osmanthus water chestnut strips pushes the dining experience to the extreme.

The interior color design blends Western and Chinese traditional and contemporary elements. It cleverly references the bright tones of Van Gogh's "Sunflowers," primarily using dazzling yellow, with striking coral poinciana accents against soft beige, making the ambiance more magnificent.

Average spending: 800 MOP and up

Lunch hours: Monday to Saturday 11:30 AM to 3 PM; Sunday and public holidays 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM

Dinner hours: Daily 6 PM to 11 PM

04. Other Dining Recommendations

Besides steakhouses and Cantonese cuisine, Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace's Japanese and Sichuan restaurants were popular before the pandemic. Wynn Macau's "Mizumi" is the only Michelin two-star Japanese restaurant in Macau.

Wynn Palace's Little Italy pizza is highly praised, while the Poolside Café and Wynn Bar are great for relaxing. However, Jing Hua Xuan, which adjusted due to the pandemic, is currently only offering internal tastings, which is a pity.

Well, leaving some regrets for next time.

05. Entertainment Information

Wynn Palace and Wynn Macau have too many places to check in. The ultra-luxurious hotel even has a different way of arrival.

Taking the cable car is the most magnificent way to enter Wynn Palace—at a height of 28 meters overlooking the Performance Lake and Cotai's charming landscape, over 1,000 emitters spray water to the rhythm of music, creating a dazzling show that will leave a deep impression. The cable car is free; with a hotel room card, you can skip the queue and ride unlimited times.

Wynn Boutique Street: Covering 9,848 square meters, the Wynn Palace boutique street gathers the world's top luxury brands. 50 stores include the latest fashion, luxury jewelry, and watches, open from 10 AM to midnight. Don't be surprised to see a long line in front of Hermès late at night—after all, this is Wynn.

Leisure and Entertainment: If shopping gets tiring, the outdoor pool at Wynn Palace is not to be missed. Tropical vibes sway on the shimmering water. Even if you don't swim, relaxing by the pool and reflecting on the fleeting dreamlike time is rewarding.

The Wynn Palace Spa, awarded Forbes Five-Star, offers a full range of services from facial treatments to full-body massages, instantly rejuvenating those tired from eating and shopping.

Playing in Macau—The Joy of Island Hopping

Macau's three islands are smaller than many imagine, but as an international coastal city where East meets West, its grandeur is immense. To say it breathes the universe is not an exaggeration.

Beyond hotels, Macau has a vast world. Color and romance are Macau's brightest symbols.

Scholar Leo Ou-fan Lee said that Portuguese culture in Macau is a gentle presence. Indeed, centuries of Western and Eastern cultures have slowly merged, forming a unique culture here. Only by walking into Macau and getting close to the architecture and stories in the streets can people appreciate the unique charm of the fusion of maritime and Chinese civilizations.

01. Ruins of St. Paul's

It's Macau's landmark, a must-visit spot. This "archway" is actually the front wall ruins of the Church of Madre de Deus (St. Paul's Church). The name "archway" has a history of Chinese-Western integration.

The Church of St. Paul belonged to St. Paul's College, which was established in 1594 and ended in 1762, the first Western university in the Far East.

A fire in 1835 destroyed St. Paul's College and its attached church, leaving only the front wall, most of the foundation, and the stone steps in front. Since then, it has become the world-famous ruins of St. Paul's Church.

Locals call it "大三巴牌坊" (Ruins of St. Paul's) because the front wall resembles a traditional Chinese archway. This stone wall blending Chinese and Western elements is unique among Catholic churches worldwide.

Transport: Taxi or take buses 10, 10A, 11, 21A, 2, 3, 3A, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8A, 26A, 33 to "新馬路" stop, then walk via the Senate Square and pedestrian path. Or take buses 17, 18, 8A, 26 to "白鴿巢總站" and walk along the stone path.

02. Macau Museum

Located next to the Ruins of St. Paul's and atop Macau's famous historical site, Monte Fort, the Macau Museum is small but exquisite, showcasing Macau's historical changes over centuries and the peaceful coexistence of residents from different countries and cultural backgrounds.

Monte Fort is in the center of the Macau Peninsula. Climbing up, you can see the entire Macau city. The fort was a military restricted area until 1965 when the barracks were converted into a meteorological station and opened to tourists.

Admission: Adults 15 MOP, students 8 MOP, free for children 12 and under, seniors 65 and over, and on Tuesdays and the 15th of each month.

Nearby spots: Love Lane, Monte Fort, St. Dominic's Church, Ruins of St. Paul's

03. Rua do Cunha

Rua do Cunha is in the center of the residential area of Taipa. Walking along, you can see the old Taipa charm. The street is lined with historic eateries, attracting a constant stream of tourists.

In 1983, Rua do Cunha was turned into a pedestrian zone, Macau's first. Since then, many souvenir shops and dessert shops opened, making it a food gathering place; you can also buy souvenirs here.

Transport: Buses 11, 15, 22, 28A, 30, 33, 34 to "Rua do Cunha" stop.

Nearby spots: Taipa Village, Casa Museu (Taipa Houses)

Nearby food: Moo Yee Kee, Cheng Cheong Restaurant, Fong Kei Pastry, Portuguese Garden (Terraço Português)

Portuguese Garden is worth a special mention. As a food capital, Macau's most distinctive cuisine is called Macanese (土生葡菜), a creative fusion of Portuguese cuisine with local ingredients using spices from around the world. Portuguese Garden is a Macanese restaurant offering stuffed red peppers with shrimp, Portuguese-style clams in white wine, classic Portuguese chicken, and Portuguese roasted suckling pig, rewarding your expectations for food.

04. Lou Lim Ieoc Garden

Built in the 19th century, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was originally farmland. It was purchased by wealthy merchant Lou Wa Sio (Lou Kau) and developed into a garden by his eldest son, Lou Lim Ieoc. After the Lou family declined, the garden was sold off in sections.

In the early 1970s, the government acquired it, restored it, and reopened it to the public in 1974. It is now Macau's most famous Suzhou-style garden, with the "Spring Grass Pavilion" water pavilion as the main structure. A pond in front, winding bridges, towering rockeries, quiet bamboo groves, gurgling waterfalls, and interlocking corridors create a vivid three-dimensional painting, showcasing the beauty of Chinese architecture.

Transport: Take buses 2, 5, 9, 9A, 12, 16, 22, 25, 28C to Lou Lim Ieoc Garden stop.

Opening hours: 06:00-21:00, closed on Fridays.

Nearby food: Albergue 1601, Casa de Café

Nearby spots: Sun Yat Sen Memorial House, Calcada do Travesseiro

05. Kun Iam Temple

Built at the end of the Ming Dynasty, about 360 years ago, Kun Iam Temple (also known as Pou Tai Un) is one of Macau's three major Buddhist temples, large in scale, long in history, vast in area, and magnificent in architecture.

The temple is a Chinese-style Buddhist building with the characteristics of famous mountain ancient temples. The first hall is the Mahavira Hall, the second is the Longevity Buddha Hall, and the rear main hall is the Guanyin Hall. Behind is a spacious and deep back garden, forming a rare Buddhist monastery complex in Hong Kong and Macau.

With its majestic appearance, three deep halls, and several connected buildings, it is a must-visit in Macau.

Transport: From the ferry terminal, take bus 12 to Avenida do Coronel Mesquita; also accessible by 8A, 17, 18, 19, 26.

Opening hours: 9:00-17:00

06. Macau Science Center

Designed by architectural master I.M. Pei and Pei Partnership Architects, the Macau Science Center has a total building area of about 20,000 square meters. Internally, it is spiral-shaped, revealing the mystery of life's double helix structure; externally, it looks like an observation tower, located by the sea, facing the infinite universe.

The Science Center consists of the Exhibition Center, Planetarium, and Conference Center. The Planetarium is particularly noteworthy, with the world's first ultra-high-definition 8,000×8,000 pixel stereoscopic digital playback system, capable of showing 3D and interactive sky shows and dome films. The real-time astronomical database allows viewers to experience traveling through the universe without time or space limitations.

Admission: Exhibition Center 25 MOP; Planetarium (dome/sky shows) 60 MOP; Planetarium (3D dome/3D sky shows) 80 MOP (Jan 1 - Dec 31, Mon-Sun).

Nearby food: Mrs. Chen's Shunde Cuisine (Fisherman's Wharf), very authentic Shunde restaurant.

Nearby spots: Macau Fisherman's Wharf, Heart-shaped Tree

07. Rotunda de Carlos da Maia (Three Lamps)

Three Lamps (Sam Zã Dang) is also known as Rotunda de Carlos da Maia. "Rotunda" comes from Portuguese, meaning a roundabout in the middle of roads. Three Lamps is the center of five streets, named after the 105th Governor of Macau, Carlos da Maia.

The nickname "Three Lamps" has two theories: one says that the lamppost in the square originally had four bulbs, but one was damaged, leaving three; the other says that three lamps faced downward and one faced upward, causing a visual error.

In recent years, many Myanmar and other Southeast Asian residents have settled here, opening various Southeast Asian eateries, making it the go-to place for authentic Southeast Asian flavors.

Transport: Buses 9A, 17, 18B, 18A, 8A, 8, 7, 25B, 22, 26, etc.

Opening hours: All day

Nearby food: Fong Kei Pig Trotters with Ginger, Ya Xin Myanmar Restaurant, Ma Qing Kang Coffee Room, Nan Guo Restaurant, Cheng Qun Snacks

Entertainment capital Macau is also a romantic paradise. Some say, "In Asia, Macau is a unique existence; it's hard to find another city as deeply and broadly integrated with Chinese and Western cultures as Macau." Indeed, the historic center of Macau was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as proof.

From A-Ma Temple Square, Lilau Square, St. Augustine's Square, Senate Square, Cathedral Square, St. Dominic's Square, Jesuits' Square, Camões Square, to A-Ma Temple, Moorish Barracks, Mandarin's House, St. Lawrence's Church, St. Joseph's Seminary and Church, Dom Pedro V Theatre, Sir Robert Ho Tung Library...

They witness the fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics, culture, religion, architecture, and technological influences, enriching the eyes and worthy of detailed exploration.

Unfortunately, time flies. On the morning of departure, our car sped on Macau Friendship Bridge. Looking out, the sea and sky were vast and blue, golden sunlight scattering on islands, cargo ships, and water surfaces. Layers of white clouds marched like armies under the huge sky, rapidly transforming.

Everything seems to look forward,

To our reunion.
