Stealing a Half-Day for Food, Fun, and Shopping: Macau Caesars Golf
Busy, as always, is the way of life.
But luckily, one part of my work involves writing about food, fun, and travel for my column. So when I'm experiencing something new, I try to fully immerse myself in the joy first, then let it settle before sharing it with all of you.
I've tried many kinds of sports. Back in school, I was even the vice-captain of the volleyball team; I'd rush home drenched in sweat every day, and honestly, sweating felt pretty good. But after entering the working world, I gradually exercised less and less—which isn't healthy. Now that I'm older, my doctor says if I want to stay fit, I must exercise. But intense workouts aren't for me, so I'm looking for something gentler. A friend once suggested golf.
Actually, years ago, a golf resort in China invited me for a holiday. But knowing nothing about golf and having no golf attire, plus being terribly busy at the time, I politely declined.
Lately, I've been spending more time in Macau. One day, that golf-savvy friend offered to take me to give it a try. I said I had no golf clothes, but she said I didn't need any—just wear my usual sportswear. Suddenly it dawned on me: I'd been overthinking it! XD
Life is short, and the sea of learning is boundless. If you don't know something and have the time, just go experience it.
I'd never noticed before, but right next to the go-kart track in Coloane is a rather large golf course!
My friend and I drove to the entrance. The security guard politely asked us to show our health codes and took our temperatures with a thermal gun. Only after passing the government-mandated checks could we enter. The club takes safety seriously, which is reassuring.
There's free parking for guests, very convenient.
After parking, we saw the three-storey main building: this is Caesars Golf Club, Macau's only semi-public golf course. Covering 175 hectares, it's an 18-hole, par-71 championship course designed in the classic coastal style, with modern multi-purpose practice facilities. It was named one of the best coastal courses of the year by China Golf magazine.
We registered at the front desk, then followed the signs to the driving range.
There it was—the driving range, perfect for beginners like me to get a feel for swinging and hitting the ball. For a simple practice session, it's only MOP150 per hour per bay on weekdays (what a pleasant surprise!), and MOP200 on weekends and holidays—much less than I'd imagined. I can definitely come by for some exercise when I have free time. Macau parents are also very keen on letting their kids take up extracurricular hobbies, and golf is now a new favorite; many parents even accompany their children to learn. This place is ideal for that.
The driving range has 15 bays, facing a vast expanse of grass. Underfoot are high-simulation turf mats, and they provide drivers and standard practice balls.
But if you want a coach, just ask at the front desk. The instructors here hold PGA certifications from the UK, South Africa, Thailand, and Hong Kong—undeniably professional.
My friend couldn't wait to start practicing, and the club arranged for Coach Chris Marrs—who holds multiple golf certifications and professional qualifications—to guide us. A foreigner? What if I'm not fluent in English? I don't know golf terminology! Haha, turns out I needn't have worried: the coach speaks fluent, standard Mandarin. What a delightful surprise!
The coach was very attentive, teaching us the correct grip and stance, and even recorded us on his phone so we could review our posture, spot mistakes, and use the videos for reference in future practice.
After our initial practice, the coach offered to take us to the separate short-game practice area. With bunkers, long grass, and two standard greens, it's right next to the driving range. The scenery is gorgeous—of course we had to take a photo!
The coach was dedicated, and I was learning very earnestly too!
I discovered that learning golf isn't as hard as I thought, and it can help cultivate a habit of concentration. It would be perfect for my young lady and young master—my kids—to learn.
The club also has an indoor teaching center with a V1 video analysis system and club fitting. But since it's a rare outing, being outdoors feels much more refreshing. Just remember to apply sunscreen and bring sunglasses.
Driving a golf cart turns out to be really easy—if you can drive an automatic car, you'll pick it up right away.
Why take a cart? Because we were heading to the championship course to broaden our horizons! (laughs)
Before hopping on, remember to grab a scorecard and some water. This course has 18 holes and meets international standards; you can see a diagram of each hole on the cart. Entering the course, the vast openness lifted my spirits. Who'd have thought that in tiny Macau there'd be such a sweeping vista, where nature and landscape blend into a slice of paradise?
Each area has clear markers like Roman columns. Placing the ball on the ground and aiming for a distant target, I suddenly felt a surge of confidence.
The coach gave a perfect demonstration first; with one swing, the ball soared right toward its destination.
I practiced hard too, and found that golf really helps sharpen your focus.
In recent years, I've noticed that golf-playing friends tend to be more successful at work. Why is that?
According to media reports, experts say that good golfers often have better leadership skills, because golf trains concentration, patience, and emotional management.
So that's it—no wonder my friend is so successful in her career.
Although golf isn't a strenuous sport, you naturally walk quite a bit, which had me—someone who usually sits in an office—sweating all over. That's great, because sweating helps the body flush out toxins.
After golfing, my stomach began to protest—we'd passed lunchtime. Not wanting to dine sweaty, we went to freshen up. Entering the ground-floor locker room, my first reaction was a 'wow!' Before me stood a public Jacuzzi and ergonomically designed stone loungers. I never expected a golf course to have such amenities.
Sadly, our stomachs were complaining loudly; otherwise, we'd have relaxed there after a shower.
The locker room was bright and clean, with showers, bathrooms, vanity tables, and electronic lockers. It was spacious and comfortable.
Then we headed to the lobby and took the white staircase next to the locker room up to the first-floor restaurant. What culinary delights awaited us?
With stylish lighting and an elegant ambiance, at the top of the stairs was the clubhouse restaurant.
The restaurant was very open and airy, with a tranquil setting—simple in design yet cozy.
There were both indoor and outdoor sections. At midday, with the sun directly overhead, it was better to stay inside. But honestly, this place would be fantastic for a party or cocktail event.
On the table sat a vase of flowers grown right at the club, creating a lovely scene in the natural light.
When we arrived, my friend had already ordered a feast of vegetables and meat dishes.
Okra, Lily Bulb, and Cloud Ear Salad
The ingredients were incredibly fresh, as if just picked from the garden, paired with a deliciously tangy-sweet dressing.
Shredded green bamboo shoots tossed in a seasoned sauce—so refreshing, perfect for summer.
I heard that many of the restaurant's vegetables are grown right on the club grounds. For ingredients they don't grow, the chefs source premium produce and never use MSG—very wholesome.
Young Coconut Soup with Silkie Chicken
This double-boiled soup requires advance order. It's said to strengthen the spleen and replenish qi, promote fluid production, and relieve dryness. It's made with fresh coconut flesh and silkie chicken; the coconut meat slips easily off the shell. The chicken and pork are wonderfully textured, and the broth is clear, sweet, and non-greasy—truly nourishing and delicious.
Sweet Melon and Conch Soup with Sea Coconut & Solomon's Seal
This soup is an absolute gem for boosting qi, nourishing yin, and strengthening liver and kidneys—suitable for both men and women. The broth is clear yet rich, and the conch meat is wonderfully tender. Thumbs up.
Braised Duck with Kudzu Root
Both main ingredients had wonderful texture: the kudzu root was crumbly, the duck meat tender. Braised in a secret sauce, the aroma wafted out the moment we lifted the lid.
The beef cubes were tender and smooth, with a slight peppery-numbing zing. I couldn't help but eat one after another.
Fish Noodles with XO Sauce, Yam, and Sweet Peas
You rarely find this dish outside. The fish noodles were freshly made, soft and almost glutinous, paired with punchy XO sauce—so unique!
A wonderfully rich and sweet tomato soup, with noodles cooked just right. In northern Chinese cuisine, 'da lu' refers to a thick, savory sauce with abundant toppings.
An outstanding dish: crispy green beans with flavorful seasonings, best enjoyed with steamed rice.
One of the signature dishes. The key is really fresh ingredients and well-balanced flavors.
This is a must-order. You can think of it as a vegetable or a dessert. Even after we kept saying we were full, our hands kept reaching for more pumpkin sticks.
Lunch was truly satisfying; we needed to digest slowly. Someone suggested we go outside to chat and enjoy the view. Stepping onto the terrace, the vast green lawn and the expansive blue sky mirrored each other perfectly—the scenery was breathtaking. I hear the sunrises and sunsets here are magnificent; even sitting here alone, you could while away an entire afternoon.
The clear sky lifted everyone's spirits.
Then we felt like shopping, so we visited the ground-floor shop to browse golf apparel and equipment.
My friend said you can find products from world-renowned golf brands here—clubs, apparel, accessories, souvenirs, and even Caesars Golf's own line.
The shop opens from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. I was surprised it opens so early! If you forget something for your game, you can just buy it here instead of driving home—very thoughtful.
But we weren't done yet. We'd heard the club's afternoon tea set was pretty good, and since we were here, we wanted to try it. So back to the restaurant we went, enjoying afternoon tea while continuing our chat, savoring the leisurely life.
Afternoon Tea Set for Two with Banana Milkshake
The three-tier stand came with sawdust pudding, chocolate mousse, shrimp toast, bacalhau balls, cookies, and ham & egg sandwiches—two pieces each. My top picks are the richly flavored banana milkshake, the crispy yet non-greasy shrimp toast, the not-overly-sweet sawdust pudding, and the bacalhau balls with visible strands of dried cod. The chocolate mousse, cookies, and ham & egg sandwich were also good.
One set wasn't enough for the four of us, so we ordered an extra pork chop bun.
Besides the restaurant, there are elegantly appointed meeting rooms, spacious banquet areas, and cozy VIP private rooms, suitable for all kinds of gatherings and conferences, or even a golf tournament party.
The restaurant is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. For private events or private dining, you can discuss timings with the club.
Caesars Golf enjoys an excellent location with easy access. Drivers never worry about parking, and for those arriving from outside, it's only about a 15-minute drive from Macau International Airport or Taipa Ferry Terminal.
Modern life is hectic; we must carve out time to properly relax. For health, finding moderate exercise is essential, and golf is a wonderful choice. We often say kids these days lack patience and emotional control—golf can cultivate exactly those, making it excellent training.
For me, I'm delighted to have found yet another leisure spot. Even just going there for lunch is something I'll look forward to.
