Macau Comes Alive at Night – Encounter a Heart-Stirring Light Festival
Macau, a city brimming with character, captivates with its unique blend of Chinese and Western heritage, vibrant local life, and irresistible cuisine scattered throughout the city.
Here the old and new intertwine, with traditional Portuguese-style architecture from a bygone era alongside sleek, modern skyscrapers. At street corners, snack stalls and dai pai dongs often have long queues, while in gleaming high-rises and luxurious settings, fine dining restaurants and Michelin-starred eateries are plentiful.
December in Macau is packed with spectacular events, with the highlight being the 2021 Macau Light Festival. From morning to night, the city’s shimmering lights and nocturnal charm turn it into a true city that never sleeps. I came specifically for the Light Festival, to indulge in this grand celebration of light art and experience Macau's unique allure around the clock.
The theme of the 2021 Macau Light Festival is 'Mars Wishes to Travel,' and it marks the city’s first-ever drone show. We arrived early at Nam Van Lake to secure a good spot and get ready to enjoy the drone performance.
Across the water, the Macau Peninsula looked stunning at night, with its soaring skyscrapers and distinctive architecture, all testifying to Macau's vibrant and diverse nightlife.
At 7 pm sharp, the drone show began. Three hundred drones slowly ascended, twinkling like stars. Set to music, they formed different patterns against the city’s night sky. First, a box appeared in the sky, then slowly opened to reveal five shining stars inside.
We then followed the shifting drone patterns as they took us on a tour of Macau's historical landmarks: the iconic Ruins of St. Paul's, A-Ma Temple, and Guia Lighthouse. It felt like we were journeying through Macau alongside the drones.
Next, the drones whisked us away from Macau to the northwest, rich in Dunhuang culture. The sky lit up with flying apsaras, one of Dunhuang’s most distinctive motifs.
The drones transformed freely, capturing the audience’s hearts and leaving us mesmerized. The sky brimmed with a kaleidoscope of colors. The show ended with a message: 'Safe and Enjoyable Travel in Macau.' This fusion of technology and art made Macau’s night even more lively and bustling.
After the drone show, I couldn’t wait to explore and photograph the various light installations. Besides the stunning light displays, there were also fun interactive activities.
Colorful lighting installations, interactive games, and projection mapping shows illuminated different corners of Macau, with 17 installations waiting to be discovered. By Nam Van Lake, a blue pyramid-shaped tech installation and the adorable mascots of the Mars family created striking outlines, ready for your photo. The scene was so dreamy, it felt like arriving on a blue planet.
There was even a light-up seesaw! After playing on ordinary seesaws so many times, this was my first time on one that glowed. Going up and down was more and more exhilarating.
There was also light-up rock climbing, perfect for kids to challenge themselves. And a glowing magic mirror: using reflection, visitors could sit on the floor and see themselves reflected as if suspended above a building—really fun.
The dazzling light installations weren’t limited to Nam Van Lake. We also went to the front of the Macau Science Center, where the displays exuded a strong sense of technology. The glass sky bridge connecting the Macau Cultural Centre and the Kun Iam Statue Waterfront Leisure Area featured a dreamy, blue zodiac lighting exhibition—come and find your own astrological sign.
Right in front of the Macau Science Center, a colorful projection mapping show was in full swing, painting the building in light and giving it a brand-new look. The giant Hello Kitty in front was a favorite with many girls and even brought back childhood memories for me.
Planets hung high overhead, and the Mars family from the Morse clan was waiting to take photos with kids and adults from Earth.
The Planet Party was even livelier, with multiple concave and convex mirrors where you could see yourself transformed into various shapes. Kids were having an absolute blast.
After the light exhibition, you could head to the outdoor market stalls to see what fun they offered. The colorful stalls resembled rainbows, each bright little house radiating vibrant energy.
A December night in Macau is absolutely worth experiencing. It happens only once a year, so don’t miss out!
December in Macau is jam-packed with activities, with many fun and interesting exhibitions coming one after another. Recently, I discovered a wonderful market at the Taipa Houses-Museum, featuring concerts, a food festival, creative cultural products, and more. All kinds of entertaining things gathered here, drawing many young people to visit and have fun.
This is the annual Lusofonia Festival, held every December. The exhibition is distinguished by stalls representing Portuguese-speaking countries, along with song and dance performances, food, and games, all showcasing Macau's Portuguese-influenced culture. The entire market lasts three days, from morning till night, with a lively, festive atmosphere.
The food on offer was incredible. Each stall had its own specialty, serving a variety of Portuguese dishes: roast pork chops, barbecued ribs, sardines, and all sorts of snacks like beef rolls. In addition to Portuguese cuisine, there was a stall selling Brazilian-style cakes that made mouths water.
Many traditional Portuguese games were set up, suitable for all ages. The kids were having the most fun with table football, climbing bamboo poles, and sack races. Winners were rewarded with tasty treats like red wine, sardines, and cured sausages.
There were also special stalls from different countries—Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea, Angola, and others—showcasing their music, handicrafts, and traditional clothing. It was truly an enriching experience!
I love strolling through the streets of Macau, where Portuguese flair is visible everywhere. The time-worn cobblestones bear the traces of countless visitors. Around unexpected corners, colorful buildings catch my eye and make me stop for a photo.
Now, Guanqian Main Street (Rua dos Ervanários) offers a fun experience: 'Guan Fai' uses mobile AR technology to create multiple check-in spots. Just open your phone and go treasure hunting with me—it’s a very innovative way to explore.
As soon as I entered the street, I was drawn to a color-block boutique: 1854 Lost and Found, a vintage shop where each floor has its own character. Stepping inside, the retro decor made me feel as if I had wandered into a 20th-century European antique store.
The entire small building is like a museum. Right at the entrance, you see Western antiques spanning the 1850s to 1950s, crossing several centuries. Since it was Christmas, there were lovely Christmas tree decorations too. A dazzling array of nostalgic treasures—pick any one, and it will have its own story.
The second floor is simply styled with a touch of French understated luxury, selling vintage European brand clothing, handbags, and jewelry.
The third floor is pure white and minimalist, with a small window ledge letting in sunlight from outside.
The fourth floor is the most exaggerated and whimsical: an entire wall covered in cartoon comics delivers a powerful visual punch. Multicolored clothes, strong contrasts, and a brightly colored merry-go-round add to the jolt.
The top floor is a rooftop area—a small terrace that feels like a private space, a little world of its own.
There’s also a Coca-Cola Museum here, which is really interesting. Inside, the red-themed décor is bold and striking.
There are various Coca-Cola specialty crafts and a commemorative edition of the first Coca-Cola bottle. The little items in the display windows are so charming, you can’t help wanting to take them all home.
When you’re tired, you can choose a unique café to relax. There are many specialty shops here waiting for you. There’s a Korean-style minimalist white café called Pace, and also a fully artistic vintage-style café named Wen Yi Men. Grab a coffee, chat with friends, and enjoy the leisurely pleasure of Macau.
This trip to Macau revealed yet another new way to explore the city. The annual Macau Light Festival sprinkles colorful lights into every corner. Whether it’s the crowded Ruins of St. Paul’s or the Portuguese-flavored streets alive with local stories, these are the moments of life we cherish.
For this city, each visit is like reading a book—from history to scenery, to food and local culture. Macau may be small, but it’s so vibrant that it leaves you longing to return.
