Searching for 'Monsters' in a Famous Hot Spring Resort
For international tourists, Arima Onsen is undoubtedly one of Japan's representative hot spring resorts.
Arima Onsen is famous for having two types of hot spring water with different compositions, known as 'Kin-sen' (Golden Spring) and 'Gin-sen' (Silver Spring). Additionally, around the inn district near the hot springs, there are many shops full of historical atmosphere. Strolling through such streets feels like stepping into a period drama, offering a unique experience.
On these quiet paths, you can easily snap photos with a strong Japanese anime vibe~
While walking here, take a moment to look out for the 'oni face tiles' along the streets.
There are a total of 15 'oni face tiles' placed along the streets near Arima Onsen.
Locally, these oni face tiles are believed to ward off evil and disasters, and are said to drive away bad luck. For this reason, Arima Onsen is also regarded as a spiritual location with special energy.
Each oni face tile has a different design, making them quite interesting to observe.
Near these two oni face tiles, there is also a small park. The park has naturally carbonated spring water gushing year-round.
The park also features a drinking fountain where you can freely enjoy the carbonated spring water.
I've heard that people used to add sugar to this carbonated spring water and drink it as a natural soda.
This carbonated spring water has a somewhat metallic taste when you drink it. While not particularly delicious, it's still a fascinating experience to just turn on a tap and drink hot spring water.
Near these oni face tiles, there are also shrines and temples where you can fully experience Japan's historical and cultural charm.
In the end, we managed to find 10 oni face tiles!
Although we couldn't locate all 15, the 10 uniquely designed oni face tiles left a strong impression on us.
When you get tired from walking, you can also enjoy a foot bath at Arima Onsen, which will sweep away your fatigue.
