[Silver Castella] A Retro and Lovely Cake Shop in Osaka

Castella cake is made by whipping eggs, then mixing in flour, milk, and malt sugar before baking. Its history dates back 400 years, when it was brought to Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, by the Portuguese.

※ At that time, Nagasaki was the only port in Japan open for foreign trade.

Japan's "Castella" is a Portuguese confection adapted to suit Japanese tastes.

While Nagasaki Prefecture is famous for its castella specialty shops, Osaka also has long-established stores where you can enjoy delicious castella!

Let me tell you about "Castella Ginsō" in Shinsaibashi, Osaka.

The first floor is the shop, and the second floor is a café.

This time I went to the café, so I headed straight to the second floor. There, you can enjoy various castella desserts.

I ordered a limited-time dessert, "Hot Castella Pudding."

A piece of castella is placed on a warm pudding, then topped with strawberries, almond flakes, and vanilla ice cream.

The staff said to me, "If you don't eat it quickly, the ice cream will melt!"

Since the ice cream melts on the warm pudding, it tastes best within 30 seconds.

The cold ice cream and warm pudding create a wonderful combination. The castella is soft, sweet, and pleasantly rich.

※ Available from 14:00, limited quantity

Let me share a little story: I asked the owner about the origin of this Hot Castella Pudding.

(Owner's comment)

Our shop's mission is "the future of castella," and we create various castella confections.

That day, while developing recipes, I baked pudding and castella, originally planning to chill them before eating. But I couldn't resist and ate it warm. Adding castella enhanced the pudding's sweetness and richness—it was unexpectedly delicious.

After repeated experiments, a staff member suggested, "Wouldn't ice cream make it even better?" So the combination of cold ice cream and warm pudding was born.

Osaka is known as Japan's "food capital," and great effort is put into its cuisine. I also want to provide unforgettable food experiences for visitors to Osaka.

At Castella Ginsō, you can also enjoy other original desserts.

The Parfait Castella is topped with fruits, cream, and ice cream, and is also generous in portion.

On the first floor shop, you can buy these specialty castella cakes as souvenirs.

They use fresh eggs, flour, rich honey, and no synthetic colorings or preservatives.

The blue box labeled "CASTE21" is the shop's signature cake, characterized by its soft and fluffy texture, with a shelf life of about 2 to 3 weeks.

Blue box "CASTE21": 1,000 yen (1,080 yen after tax)

The red box "CASTE11" has less sugar than CASTE21, with more egg yolk and honey, giving it an even softer texture.

Red box "CASTE11" (half): 650 yen (702 yen after tax)

This also has a shelf life of only 2 to 3 weeks.

There are also seasonal limited items.

This is the September–December limited edition "Chestnut Castella," made with Italian chestnuts.

At the Shinsaibashi main store, you can watch the craftsmen at work, which is very interesting.

Additionally, Ginsō's castella is said to be sold at major department stores in Osaka. If you want to give it as a gift, be sure to visit those department stores.
