Traveling Back to the Edo Period
Learn about the history and culture of Osaka from 200 years ago at the 'Osaka Museum of Housing and Living'.
This is Japan's first museum dedicated to the theme of 'history and culture of housing'.
There is also a kimono experience!
What's interesting is that the museum is located on the top floors of a tall building, with three floors on the 8th, 9th, and 10th levels.
The tour starts from the 10th floor. The observation deck on the 10th floor is the first stop, where you can get a panoramic view of the entire 'Edo Osaka'.
The museum perfectly recreates the streets of Osaka in the late Edo period, and also incorporates exhibits showing Osaka's cityscape and lifestyle from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras.
Moreover, the ceiling screen changes to allow visitors to experience dusk, rainbows, moonlight, meteors, and dawn.
Through the exhibits, you can imagine the lifestyles of people in different historical periods and gain a comprehensive understanding of Osaka's development.
The museum also houses a city model of Edo-period Osaka, which is the only surviving city model of its kind in Japan.
It is an ideal choice for traveling back to the Edo period, wearing a kimono, taking photos, and creating unique visual memories.
The museum mainly uses models and materials to recreate representative housing and lifestyles of modern Osaka.
There is also a residential theater that mostly uses model displays, along with stories, videos, and models to experience the changes in modern Osaka.
Many everyday items such as home appliances, daily necessities, and transportation are exhibited.
The museum faithfully reproduces an old commercial street from the Tenpo era of the Edo period, complete with various trades.
As soon as you step inside, you feel like you are back in the bustling commercial street 200 years ago, with various specialty shops on both sides.
Every detail is perfectly restored right before your eyes. Highly recommended!
The kimono experience is on the 9th floor, but spots are limited. Tickets are released every 30 minutes.
Because the price is very low, it's very suitable for those who want to try on a kimono economically.
The key point is that it's located in central Osaka near Umeda, so you can easily visit after going to Umeda.
There are also model displays of Osaka from various eras, etc. For those interested in history or who enjoy a sense of time travel, it's worth visiting.
The museum is indoors, so you don't have to worry about bad weather.
You can spend a beautiful day exploring.
