Autumn Letter from Midosuji
An autumn letter from Midosuji in Osaka!
The ginkgo-lined street creates a golden landscape.
The days when we feel a chill in the morning and evening are increasing. Each day brings a deeper sense of autumn. Before winter truly arrives, I hope you can go out and enjoy the autumn leaves!
While admiring the autumn leaves, don't you feel a sense of tranquility and joy? Actually, it is said that viewing autumn leaves activates the prefrontal cortex, releasing serotonin and providing a stress-relieving effect! Even if you tend to feel down due to seasonal changes, the colorful autumn leaves might brighten your mood.
When it comes to autumn leaf viewing, or "momiji-gari," people usually think of mountain areas. In Osaka, there are famous spots like Daisen Park, Katsuo-ji Temple, and Minoh Park in the suburbs... But if you want to easily enjoy autumn leaves within Osaka city, head to Midosuji, which runs north-south through the city center!
From late November, the ginkgo trees planted along both sides of the road simultaneously change from green to yellow, creating a breathtaking golden landscape. This summer in Osaka, temperatures exceeded 35°C for several consecutive days. It is said that the coloring of autumn leaves is proportional to the summer sunshine duration, as photosynthesis becomes more active, resulting in more vivid colors. During this season, the ginkgo-lined street always moves the heart, but this year the golden hue is even more beautiful than in previous years, isn't it?
From the steps of Osaka Metro Yodoyabashi Station, Hommachi Station, or Shinsaibashi Station, you can immediately see the ginkgo trees along Midosuji. The trees line both sides of the approximately 4 km north-south road. Why not take a stroll for one station while admiring the beautiful ginkgo trees?
If possible, I recommend visiting on a crisp autumn day, from noon to sunset. The color of the ginkgo leaves changes with the angle of the sunlight, so you can enjoy different views at different times. When the sun shines from the south, the ginkgo trees are most radiant around 1:00 PM. Taking photos facing south will result in backlighting, so try shooting from other directions. You can capture spectacular photos.
Today the sky is a clear, cloudless blue. It beautifully complements the ginkgo trees.
Along Midosuji, there are many spots where you can take a short break, such as luxury brand buildings, retro-style buildings, and stylish cafes. I hope you can experience them too.
Complementing the ginkgo trees are as many as 29 sculptures. At first glance, the bronze statues may seem unremarkable, but upon closer inspection, you'll find that each is labeled with a work title and the artist's name. There are even masterpieces by renowned artists in the history of sculpture, such as Rodin and Takamura Kōtarō. These are not replicas; all are genuine works by top artists from Japan and abroad, donated to make Midosuji a charming district. Osaka City accepted donations from companies along the route to gather these sculptures.

Don't you think Osaka is a city full of charm, where you can enjoy street art and autumn leaves along the streets?
The ginkgo-lined Midosuji was designated as an Osaka City Tangible Cultural Property in 2000 and is one of the New 100 Best Roadside Trees of Japan (selected by Yomiuri Shimbun). Its scenery is highly acclaimed, but Typhoon No. 21 that hit Osaka in 2018 damaged many trees. To ensure immediate repairs and replacements in future, a local company compiled a list of reserve trees. Other companies also donated to support restoration.
You can truly feel the spirit of Osaka residents who work together to protect and improve the city!
What do you think of Midosuji during its prime viewing season? During this period, various areas also decorate the ginkgo trees with illumination, and the Midosuji Illumination event creates a stunningly beautiful sight! The lights turn on around 17:00, and the moment they light up is truly moving. Don't miss it!
