Think Kani Doraku is the only option in Japan? Come enjoy a sweet Matsuba crab feast!

When I first came to Japan, I was captivated by the giant moving crab at Shinsaibashi. It cost over 10,000 yen per person and wasn't cheap. The experience was refined, but not so delicious that I wanted to go again. Later, after living in Japan for a while, I discovered that every winter, the locals go on a special crab trip (カニ旅🦀). And guess what? It turned out to be the real deal!

The so-called カニ旅🦀 involves staying at a Japanese inn (ryokan) that provides generous local breakfasts and dinners, offering a relaxing two-day, one-night getaway. (Mark my words: breakfast and dinner!!!)

This time I went to Kasumi-cho, Kami-cho, Hyogo Prefecture, near the Sea of Japan. There are many inns along the coast, famous for serving Matsuba crab. I stayed at MitahamaSo (三田浜荘), located at 1316-2, Shimohama, Kasumi-cho, Mikata-gun, Hyogo Prefecture 669-6564. The cost was about 20,000 yen per person, including two meals—not too expensive! The nearby inns are all quite similar, offering crab meals and all of them are excellent! Be sure to book in advance!

The inn's lodging is simple, mainly tatami rooms, accommodating 2–4 people, with a sea view from the room.

Now let's see the crab feast!!!

On the second day of the two-day, one-night trip, I also visited nearby Kinosaki Onsen, a famous hot spring town in Japan. There's a seafood market there with all kinds of fresh seafood and big crabs! You can buy them to take away or have them prepared on the spot. The pricey Matsuba crabs are really expensive...
