An autumn letter from Midosuji in Osaka! Ginkgo trees lining the street create a golden landscape.

Days where you feel a bit of chill in the morning and evening are increasing. Every day the autumn atmosphere deepens. Before winter truly arrives, I hope everyone can go out and enjoy the autumn leaves!

When you appreciate the autumn leaves, don't you feel that their beauty refreshes your mind? Actually, it is said that viewing autumn leaves activates the frontal lobe of the brain, releasing serotonin and having a stress-relieving effect! Even if you tend to feel down due to seasonal changes, seeing the colorful autumn leaves might brighten your mood.

When it comes to viewing autumn leaves, or 'momijigari', people usually think of going to the mountains. In Osaka, there are many famous autumn leaf spots in the suburbs like Daisen Park, Katsuo-ji Temple, Minoh Park... But if you want to easily enjoy autumn leaves in central Osaka, you should head to Midosuji, which runs north-south through downtown Osaka!

In late November, the ginkgo trees planted along the road will simultaneously change from green to yellow, creating a stunning golden landscape. This summer in Osaka, temperatures above 35°C continued for several days. It is said that the coloring of autumn leaves is proportional to summer daylight hours; the photosynthesis that forms leaf pigments becomes more active, resulting in more beautiful colors. At this time, the ginkgo trees are always breathtakingly beautiful, but this year's golden color is even more brilliant than before, isn't it wonderful?

From Osaka Metro stations like Yodoyabashi, Hommachi, or Shinsaibashi, just a few steps up and you will immediately see the ginkgo trees of Midosuji. Ginkgo trees line the approximately 4km north-south road on both sides. Why not take a walk for one station distance while admiring the beautiful ginkgo trees?

If possible, choose a clear, crisp autumn day and go to enjoy the ginkgo trees from noon until sunset. The color of the ginkgo leaves changes with the angle of the sunlight, so you can see different scenery at different times. When the sun shines from the south, the ginkgo trees are most radiant around 1:00 PM. Taking photos facing south may be backlit, so try shooting from other directions. You can take spectacular photos.

Today the sky is a cloudless, deep blue. It contrasts beautifully with the ginkgo leaves.

Along Midosuji, there are also many spots where you can take a break, such as luxury brand buildings, retro-style buildings, stylish cafes, etc. So I hope you can experience that as well.

Adding to the charm of the ginkgo trees are a group of up to 29 sculptures. They may look like ordinary bronze statues at first glance, but if you look closely, you'll see that each is labeled with the work title and the artist's name. There are even masterpieces by world-renowned artists such as Rodin and Takamura Kotaro, who have left their mark on sculpture history. These are not replicas; each is an authentic piece contributed by top Japanese and international artists. To make Midosuji a more attractive district, Osaka City accepted donations from companies along the route to gather these sculptures.

Their expressions are so vivid that you can't help wanting to talk to them!

You can enjoy street art and autumn leaves just on the street. Don't you think Osaka is a city full of charm?

The ginkgo trees along Midosuji were designated as Osaka City Cultural Properties in 2000, and are also among the 'New 100 Scenes of Japan's Roadside Trees' (selected by Yomiuri Shimbun). This landscape is highly praised, but Typhoon No. 21 that hit Osaka in 2018 caused damage to many trees. To be able to repair and replace them quickly in future, a certain company in the city prepared a list of reserve trees. Additionally, other companies donated funds for reconstruction.

You can really feel the spirit of the people of Osaka who work together to protect and improve their city!

What do you think of Midosuji at this peak viewing season? During this period, in the evening, various areas will light up the ginkgo trees with illuminations and hold the Midosuji Illumination event. The dazzling scenery is also enchanting! The lights come on around 5:00 PM, and the moment they light up is truly moving. Don't miss this period!
